    Rey wasn't likeable in the first movie. They made her too much of a Mary Sue. It's famous how Leia embraced Ray instead of Chewie when she heard of Han's death. The girl she'd met a few times in the last two weeks, instead of Han's spiritual brother and Leia's friend of twenty years.

    I've thought one of two things would have worked better. Either.... Make Rey and Finn equal protagonists, but each the antagonist to the other by the end of the trilogy. Don't make either of them evil, but have them both become Luke's students and both diametrically opposed to how The Jedi should continue. Rey would be the one who desires to see the old order continue, but Finn sees the old order through less rose colored glasses. (His experience as a storm trooper would especially resonate with The Old Jedis' habit of taking in children.) My other thought is that they should have better explained how Rey suddenly became so skilled in "The Force Awakens" and built upon it. The explanation I've heard is that when Kylo Ren tried to probe her mind, it backfired and she got his entire life worth of training. Building from here, they could have gone even harder with her "mary-sue" characteristics, but in a way that made it more of a problem for her. The scene with her "accidentally" throwing Sith Lightning would have happened much sooner, and her overall goal would have been to find Luke not to train to be a Jedi, but to control all these awesome and deadly powers she suddenly has the ability and muscle memory for, but not the understanding or control of.

    I like the first part. Concerning Rey's extreme competence in harnessing the Force, the only way to make it work would have to make her Anakin's reincarnation.

    I think failing to force heal Han would have been a great set up. I never liked the second act of The Force Awakenes: I think it tries to be both intimate with a few characters (Han, Finn, Rey) but also grandiose and capture the whole galaxy. If they ditched the "third Death Star" and really leaned into the neo-N@zi imagery of the rally on the base and had the galaxy just accept or even help the first order it would have put the audience in the emotional space the characters are in for The Last Jedi, especially Luke. It doesn't really feel like the Republic fell and so reviving it doesn't feel like a win; the people focus which the script for Duel of the Fates suggests (for Finn and the people of Courasant) would have felt more like our characters getting supported than an armada out of the blue (literally 😅).

    Has to be said I was very confused by the First Order, I would have actually liked to have seen Ben Solo at the start of the Force Awakens and maybe experience his turn to the dark side so we could connect with him more, I don't think it needed to be shrouded in mystery. It was all such a missed opportunity.

    @@TheStoryCan at the time the neo-Nazi stuff was seemingly a little over the top but then the Charlottesville yt-supremacy rally, the insurrection, etc. showed me how much contextualizaba the empire in overtly fascist tones was important (particularly as a reactionary neo-fascist state idolizing a failed one). Regardless, the actual rise to power would have been way, way more impactful. Even if it was just showing that the majority of the galaxy supported or even didn't stop (didn't not support) the first order would show the banality of evil and how fascist populism is really easy. I think a Ben solo fall would be cool but for me the first order with Ben in it by itself has simple but profound implications that the writers just breezed over.

    A great analysis. Too many critics just call Rey a Mary Sue and leave it at that. And Disney could have used Rey's hyper-competence to their advantage, because with the exception of the Jedi Mind Trick, all of Rey's abilities make sense. Her upbringing as a scavenger means she's good with technology...especially ancient technology like the Falcon. Jaku seems like "winner takes all" sort of world so it makes sense she'd know how to handle a blaster and her pole-staff. But when she meets Luke, he tells her that while she may be naturally good at everything, the one thing that will never come easy is the Light Side. I'm trying to think of way to fit Force Healing into the Force Awakens and keep coming up short. I like the idea if instead of falling into a bottomless pit, Han had fallen maybe a story or two. Chewie shoots Kylo, forcing him to retreat and Rey and Fin rush down and try to save him but fail to. But then the question is how did Rey know about Force Healing to begin with at that point in the story. Maybe if Maaz or whatever her name was--Chewie's girlfriend--was with them, she could desperately tell Rey that a Jedi could heal Han. And since Rey is naturally talented she's able to figure out the general idea but still fails.

    Another lesson don’t make a sequel just for world building to go backwards for example don’t kill off the Jedi again off screen and destroy the new republic in one movie show progression instead of regression of the original trio goals.

    Another thing about the trilogy is Rey pretty much goes through Luke’s empire strikes back arc twice with a bit of return of the jedi, where in empire Luke struggled with the dark side, went into a dark side cave, and was told information about his father and went to confront the emporer/his destiny in 6. TLJ version for Rey she is struggling with the pull to the dark side, she is told a piece of information about her past lineage where she’s a nobody, she has a dark side cave scene in that hole and she goes to confront an emporer like figure in Snoke. Going through all this you’d think she’d progress in the 9th film, make a new double bladed lightsaber cause the saber was destroyed this would force her to actually progress. But JJ didn’t like this direction, so he essentially reverted Rey to struggling with her identity yet again, she has a pull to the dark side, she gets JJs version of the cave scene when she in in the second Death Star and sees evil Rey, she is told another revelation she’s a Palpatine, and she goes to face the actual emporer this time. You have two directors visions for this character and in one sense I don’t like how both are executed, but Rian made a decision like them or not in TLJ the second film and she should’ve moved on and evolved in the final film, so now when you watch TLJ all that she goes through is kinda redundant because she’ll be right back to square one in the next film. And again like you said she was already perfect character in the force awakens anyway so there wasn’t even really much for her to learn in later films, but this was a little observation I got rewatching them and analysing them of a 3 film structure level

  • @TheStoryCan

    @TheStoryCan

    The Palpatine revelation was far too late and comes across as a desperate attempt to bring fans back after the reception of TLJ. They needed a clearer direction so they could have planned these things on a 3 film level for sure

    I agree that "The Last Jedi" *could* have been a good movie. This whole trilogy has some great ideas, then some less than stellar ones. Let's face it, each trilogy had the same qualities. The problem with this one is, as I agree with you, it appears it's the first draft without anyone attempting to revise it before shooting. Sadly. This was an easy money opportunity. Up front, it's not the characters that caused the problems as much as how they are presented, how the story unfolds, and a massive disregard for content that came before it. Another KZreadr took the characters and situations presented with in the Sequel Trilogy and re-presented the storyline where it developed characters, built on the Original Trilogy, and otherwise made story progression in logic pushes with the same end goal. You know what happened? It is now a favorite of mine. It made me forget the Expanded Universe storyline and cheer for these characters. Also, if this is your first video -- awesome. Can't wait to have more.

    you need to work on your writing style. You cant reuse the same "but what did they mean by this" or "what is this trick they use"? multiple times to rehook the audience again and again, it felt AI generated at times bcuz of it. Additionally, you brought up the data sheet with various events and plotpoints of the triology, but never followed up with the premise, so that was an entirely wasted paragraph to say the least. Tl;Dr - too many hook-ins, too little information
