How to Root Fig Cuttings - 2 months

Ойын-сауық

I garden in the Phoenix AZ area USDA zone 9B and am a fig growing enthusiast. This is an update on my Black Madeira fig cuttings that are now around 60 days into rooting. I update the results on the three rooting methods used (1. Simple 2. Rooting gel 3. Rooting gel + scoring) and share how I transitioned them to outdoors.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your content! I'm moving to Pearce soon and have been really interested in getting into some drought tolerant fruit trees. Is there a variety of fig you would recommend to a beginner? The property has an elevation of about 4300ft and we are in zone 8a

Natasha, I forgot to ask, has your Royal Poinciana bloomed for you yet? Mine made it through it's second winter so I'm hoping that it will bloom next year? I took some cuttings from my in ground Panache and have simply potted my cuttings. I'm going to see if I have more success just letting Spring wake them up naturally and doing its thing. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge. I look forward to seeing your cuttings on Etsy.

My RP started blooming year 3 (I think) and has bloomed the past few years in early Summer but only around a dozen blooms. I would love for it to bloom like in Florida but I wonder if they need more humidity for that. I too started a bunch of fig cuttings outside this year. I will be interested to see the success rate on those. They have not broken bud quite yet.

Your fig rooting experiment results were quite interesting. Is frankincense a frost sensitive tree?

Thanks for watching. Yes; frankincense is frost sensitive. It can be grown in ground in USDA climates 9b and up but otherwise should be grown in a container to bring indoors for protection during Winter.

Love your content! Question: I received some jujube cuttings in the mail probably 3 weeks ago but I haven’t gotten to rooting them yet. Do you think they would still root?

Thanks! I have no experience with jujube so I can't say. When receiving hardwood cuttings, I find its a good practice to store them in your refrigerator crisper drawer until ready to root or graft. If you did that then you should have no issue as long as they were good cuttings.

I stopped using the cup method and went to the fig pop method. Only reason, I ran out of space with cups and I can get get twice as many in the same space. Everything else is the same. Tops are exposed to room environment, I seal the tops with wax. Under timed LEDs and I spritz with water once a day when I have leaves. Half strength fish emulsion on foliage. This is my third year doing this and found it’s not so much the method as the viability of the cuttings. Who you buy from makes a big difference. Until my trees get a little older I get my cuttings from Off the beaten path nursery. Big Bill is well known in the fig community. He is not that far from me so his trees are proven to handle our climate. From my experience with his cuttings, I get a 95% success rate and all start to break bud in a week.

All great points. Figs are pretty easy to root when you have quality fresh cuttings. Lots of different ways to go so it usually boils down to personal preference. It's great you have a local source!

Have you ever had a cutting fully root and grow a few leaves and then just stop? Ive had the same two leaves on one of my cuttings for two months. Fertilize the same as the others.

I've never had stunted growth on a fully rooted plant. Is it getting adequate light? One trick you may want to try is giving it a dilute shot of molasses (1 tbsp to 1 gallon). The sugars should give it near instant energy and encourage growth.

This year I have tried to follow everything that you used to root your fig cuttings. I’m 2 months in and I have 3 White Madeira, 2 Black Madeira, and 2 Col De Dame cuttings showing great progress. I have noticed that on many of my leaves they have light blotches, or mottled lighter areas while some leaves are dark green and very healthy looking. I would say that this is appearing on all of my cuttings. Some leaves are a healthy dark green color and on the same cutting I will also have those light blotches on a majority of the leaves which don’t appear near as robust. Is this an indication of anything serious? I’m using the same fertilizer at one fourth the suggested amount once per week. Just now beginning to acclimate to the sun.

Great to hear and very nice selection! Those blotches are likely FMV and no it's nothing to be concerned about. It's pretty common to see that when initially rooting cuttings. As the fig plants grow bigger and stronger they will outgrow FMV and even with it fruit and grow well in our climate.

@@EnlightenmentGarden I thought that might be the case. I still have 3 cuttings each of Pastilliere and Bourjassotte Grise that haven’t done anything yet but the cambium is still green. They all came from Harvey at Figaholics. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks again for your cuttings series from last year!!

Do you ph your feed water?

  • @EnlightenmentGarden

I did not adjust ph in the water. Our city water in my areas has a ph around 8. Prior to moving the cuttings outside for the first 2 months I was using RO water on every watering to avoid chemicals but once hardening outside used water straight from the spigot.
