Those Conadria figs are so good! Glad you got a few in the first year.

If you mix clonex rooting gel in your water you let them sit in for an hour you can skip having to dip them in the powder

I’m going to try to root one in spring water changed daily. Remove all the large leaves and keep the apical meristem growth. Wish me luck. I give it three weeks and I’ll have roots.

I like the wax tip also. I will try it on my Mulberry and Quince propagations in the Spring. Your videos are always informative and entertaining. Thanks. By the way, I'm about 40 miles north of Atlanta.

Great video! I was recently at a Dutch oven gathering and one of the speakers said he finds paraffin wax at estate sales relatively cheap. He uses them for fire starters but maybe someone here may want to keep their eye out if they go to estate sales and save some money. I don't know if other wax has chemicals in it that would hurt the cuttings but for a few cents it might be worth it to try.

Your greenhouse looks like fig heaven.

Green unlignified cuttings dry very fast if you are taking green wood cuttings to propagate yourself it works great but when someone is shipping you cuttings there is a great chance that green wood will dry out during shipping and or by the time you actually get them and start them

I started using wax on my cuttings 2 years ago. I use bees wax instead of paraffin wax because it’s organic and paraffin wax in its melted state releases harmful chemicals into the air. I don’t have a wax melter like what you have but now I know what I want to get for the next season! I just use a torch on top of the block and dip the cut ends into it. I put wax on both ends to hold the moisture until I’m ready to propagate. I just leave a little extra branching on the rooting side so when I’m ready to propagate I start off with a fresh clean cut. Great video and nice looking orchard!

Maybe I'll try to propagate the mystery fig in my backyard. It makes a large dark purple fig that I haven't been able to try yet as I was gifted the cutting last year and it's been moved twice so no figs yet. The friend that gave it to me told me it makes a large dark purple fig and gave me a small jar of the preserves she had made from her tree my cutting came from. I've not pruned it at all but I think I will once it goes dormant. I'm not a fig expert by any means because my family always had the brown turkey fig only. I did have some figs in Malta/Gozo that were huge and I could peel them like a banana and was the best fig I've ever tasted, but since I'd only had the brown turkey I didn't have a lot to compare it to.

Man definitely extend the greenhouse. Take it with you when you go.

Moving home would be difficult, when you know your garden and put the work into building them to have a food source and educational base, now orchids like the figs. Buying a neighboring property is ideal if available allowing you to use their home or rebuild a new home. You can ultimately rebuild or extend your own home where your family is currently living.😊

We considered that option, but the land owners around us don't want to sell. Home is where you make it. With a little sweat equity, I can easily duplicate this setup somewhere else.

Why did the fig cutting avoid the internet? It didn't want to get caught up in too many "rooting" forums! 🌿💻

I used melted soy wax to seal the top cut ends for the handful of blackberry cuttings I did recently. Since it's a softer wax and melts at a much lower temperature than paraffin, it wouldn't be as hot on the cuttings, and would be a lot easier if it gets spilled on skin.

the wax tape better for grafting out in orchard but yah if in one spot the pot of wax be great.

Hey, I have to say that I love your videos, especially the shorts. They have helped me a ton. 😊 I'm going to use candle wax to seal the ends of the cuttings. If there are little green sprouts at the tip should I break them off before dipping them in the wax? I know I'm trying to prevent green growth until the roots are formed. What about the little buds and sprouts that will be below the soil, should I pinch them off? Thanks!

I have some that will root in 8 weeks. I have others that might take a few months.

Try a toilet wax ring. Will not need to melt it and probably cheaper.

Have you ever tried rooting green soft wood cuttings? I just did some thinning cuts and looking for any suggestions.

Love to have something that would survive an Ohio winter. Some years get brutally cold and I'm not sure one would make it.

I'm in North Carolina, and I found Hardy Chicago (better than a Brown Turkey) has done well the years we get a full week or two of frost and freezing temps. BUT, you're gonna have to mound the trees roots with leaves or straw/hay/or some kind of tree blanket. The frost may actually help by "self-pruning" your growth. Figs grow on new growth. The other thing is to plant (in ground) a tree that fruits EARLY. Travis has Black Malta, or "Malta" fig which was MY earliest tree (JUNE!) AND we had a late frost, so it came back super fast and the fruit was a delicious fig. I would try that.

Hi, do you pre-moist the promix hp before filling up the pots and planting the cutting? And would you please tell me how much water do you give plants right after planting the cuttings? Some people pre-moist the promix drain it thoroughly and once they plant the cuttings they don’t water them right away , some people use the promix out of the box and once the cuttings are in the ground the water the pot thoroughly . Thanks

3-4" - not sure exactly.

Ace hardware can order big bales of promix.

You can also dip the tip in wood glue. Very cost effective and does not wear off like wax.

The problem with glue is that it is much more difficult for the new leaves to break through it. Wax is a softer texture and easier for the leaves to break through

What would you recommend for zone 4, I have brown turkey, Chicago hardy and Desert king. I'm looking to add another variety.

Brooklyn White or Salem Dark would be good options. Both of those are known to grow well in the New England area. Olympian is another cold-hardy one.

Hi, what is the "pro mix"? I didn't see it anywhere.

My dad passed away a couple years ago and while I was walking around his property I came across a fig tree. How can I find out what kind it is? My Daddy had a green thumb and could grow anything so there is no telling what kind it is or how long he has had it. I would like to find out if possible though. Thanks.

Very tough to identify a variety because there are so many. Most of the older trees around here are either Brown Turkey or Celeste because that was all that was sold or planted years ago.

If I can even do it. My dad had the green thumb. I always grew the roses lol... Anyway, if you would be willing to let me send you a couple of cuttings and see what kind of fruit it bore or maybe I could take it to the University of Florida. They might be able to tell me. Its just got me curious because I thought I knew all Daddy had planted out there but apparently I don't. Thanks for your time.

I went to visit him one day and he had me walk out back with him. He showed me a plant and told me he had no idea what it was but it was sure growing nice. I took one look at it and told him to cut it down. It was a marijuana plant that was probably 5-6 foot tall. We would laugh about that all the time lol... Thanks again for your advise.

What type of wax do you use? Ive used some melted candles before, but if you are using a lot of it, you might have found something more cost effective 😁

I got a pretty decent-sized bar of paraffin wax off Amazon for $10 or so -- enough wax to do hundreds of cuttings.

Hi there, new viewer trying to propagate this unknown fig tree in our yard.. So (this is a dumb question but) I have a ton of those Scentsy warmers with scented wax cubes I bought from a friend trying to start a home-based business. Could I use that to seal or would it be too much scent and stuff 😮 ?

There's quite a few of them. I just use what I can get in the big bales locally, which is the BX.

Could you please describe your greenhouse and give the seller’s information? I would love to have a greenhouse that’s tall enough to grow a couple of citrus trees in since everyone I have planted outdoors has died back below the graft. Of course, that wouldn’t be my only reason for purchasing a greenhouse. Thank you.

The cutting could also dry out because water in pots pools around the outside and soil tends to be dryer in the center

In your greenhouse where did you get the black plant stands at the bottom. I’ve been using pallets on bricks and the rot really fast.

Trust me. You don't. They're not worth the hype. They take forever to grow and there are plenty of varieties out there that are just as good. I dug up the one BM tree I had a month ago and will be replacing it with something else.

Did you start cutting in smaller pots last year? i thought you just started yours in the 4x9 tree pots. Better get that greenhouse extension on before you have to up pot all those this year...... your not going to have the room.
