I used to dampen the end of the paper just slightly before pushing it into the divot at the end of the dowel. It made it stay together better.

if you want to add a round to it you just place it at the bottom, choke it off and tie it, then add the powder

I use a square of toilet tissue rolled to replicate the size of the bullet on top of 70 gr. black powder. Then tie off the tube with string. My folds are different, giving the cartridge a more authentic appearance. When told to load (at a CW event) I can use the tissue as wadding for ear plugs. But to each his own.

My Uncle just gave me a original 1861 Springfield. It was left at his house in PA when he bought it. With the cartridge pouch, and bayonet too. It still fires, but when I take it to the range, I want to have the paper cartridges all rolled with the Mini ball. Is making the cartridge with the bullet the same way as you showed in the video? Or do you put the bullet in first, then pour the powder, and finish it off with the fold? Thankyou for posting this video, and would really be thankful if you can take the time to tell me. I want to shoot the rifle the same way the soldiers did.

You would use 2 of those tubes. Take an empty one, place the bullet in, then take a second one with powder and place that tube inside the first one. Then fold the whole thing as normal, like in this video. You can’t use only one tube with both bullet and powder, because if the bullet was lubed or greased, that would spoil the powder

VieLumiere G used guns are a lot cheaper. But it depends what you’re looking for. An Enfield musket or a carbine rifle. I’m in the New York 9th cavalry so I use a carbine. And I got mine on eBay for $500. Needed some cleaning and oil. But it fires nicely, be sure to do research before purchasing. You don’t want to get ripped off, for a piece of junk that won’t fire.

so you just pore in the powder in your musket and use the paper as a wad and then shoot ?

Black powder going off in a long musket barrel booms wad or no wad. Probably safer no wad. I caught dry grass on fire with smouldering paper. Once in a Civil war documentary I was acting in, my wad caught the camera lens cover on fire. I was frugal 40 to 45 grains is good enough for a 58! One group we called the Virginia foot artillery. Those bozos loaded 125 grains, they got together for a group roll and they all used that extreme load. With modern muskets it seemed safe, never heard of a mishap.

A lot of folks don't realise they used dry grass or leaves for fodder (wadding). Using greased patches or making paper cartridges was expensive and unheard of. Early musketeers used APOSTLES . Metal or wood tubes that held powder and were secured to a leather belt with cord. Many times shot & powder was in the apostles. Rammed home with dried grasses or straw. But also remember shot and ball can be deadly just laying on uncrimped powder in a long barrel

At nearly all Mainstream events paper (wadding) is not rammed unless given orders to do so (raining, more hardcore authentic events, etc)

60gr is a good load. I hate to see vid's that tell people to load 100 + gr's powder. Not only a waste of powder, but not safe. Thanks for a sensible video.

I always used glue stick for even more strength I worked security at night alone had lots of reading time and cartridge time!. Some of my buddies were hard core and secure the ends with thread, and make 12 round paper packets. They would copy civil war cartridge labels COOL but you can carry correctness too far!.
