In this video you will discover what rolling a sea kayak is, and what it’s not. Most people completely miss this…
But rolling is not about what you do with the paddle.
It’s not about the powerful hip snap.
It's not even about having any special talent.
It’s not about having a lot of knowledge about rolling.
There’s actually very little you need to know.
If you can move your body naturally. And I mean your pelvis, back, head. And rotate a little at the waist, you can roll your sea kayak with ease and finesse.
Probably without a paddle.
The inuit evolved the sea kayak roll to survive. They hunted from their narrow kayak. In an environment where the arctic water is too cold to risk a swim.
They learned to roll the sea kayak like we learn to ride a bike.
Not like it’s something hard to do.
It had to be easy.
If rolling feels hard, I will suggest that you’re probably missing the very essence of what the sea kayak is.
Maybe you don’t feel like you’re wearing your sea kayak. And you may have it fitted in a way that stops your body from moving naturally.
Most often it’s your pelvis that gets jammed in a way that prevents the mobility that makes the roll easy.
Without the pelvis moving freely, it’s hard to even walk. Dancing loses its elegance.
And your sea kayak becomes a difficult boat to maneuver and roll.
You may have to rely on force instead of finesse.
That’s how it was for me when I first learned to sea kayak.
What changed everything was a rolling video called “rolling with Maligiaq.”
In it was a rolling demonstration from a young Inuit. I was so inspired to learn to roll.
But before I could move like that, I had to completely refit my kayak.
What a revelation that was.
It’s not just rolling that got transformed. It changed the whole meaning of what the kayak is.
When you unlock your pelvis you realize that rolling is not like having to learn a new skill.
It’s more like learning to walk. It’s much easier when you let your pelvis move naturally.
Rolling can only feel awkward or hard, when you’re stuck in a boat.
Moving your pelvis is the most natural thing to do.
Trying to do anything without moving your pelvis naturally...that’s what’s hard.
I’ve been helping paddlers discover the true meaning of the sea kayak for over 15 years. And I often see even experienced paddlers completely transform their skills overnight just by making this simple shift. No time or skill required. You just change how the kayak fits you so it moves with you.
That’s the whole idea of the kayak. It’s something you put on.
Easy.
If you follow these steps, rolling with ease is inevitable.
You rotate your pelvis naturally.
Next you need to be able to crunch forward and arch back. Kind of like doing a sit up, but while your pelvis is rotated.
And that’s it.
Two steps.
Crunch forward and arch back.
It won’t work if your pelvis is stuck. And for most kayakers their pelvis is stuck. This is where most people completely miss the true genius of the sea kayak.
If you don’t stop it, the kayak moves with you naturally.
If you want to know how to fit your kayak in a way that allows you to move your pelvis, just click the link in the description and sign up for my free “unlock your agility” mini course. You’ll find it in the description below this video.
When you finally funlock your pelvis, a whole new world opens up.
Now you have power behind your forward stroke so you can keep going all day. And it doesn’t even feel hard.
Maybe the cramping goes away because there’s this constant natural motion.
Kayaking becomes an outstanding workout.
Moving your pelvis may stop the pain in your arms and shoulders. especially when turning.
And bracing.
And ofcourse rolling becomes easy. Even for older and less athletic people.
I hope this video helps you,
Thanks for watching.

I'm a noob. Took my Advantedge out for the first time thinking it was going to be a breeze. Nature showed me I wasn't as skilled as I thought I was. What a $#/+show that was trying to get my big butt back into it. FAIL. Have been practicing and found my way. Next is rolling. I've got a seals sneak spray skirt. Only one I can find for the Advantedge kayak. I'm going to try the wax trick on the cockpit ring. It's kinda easy to pull off the skirt. Anyway love your videos ! God bless and thank you

I admit, I haven't looked at your whole Playlist, but what I haven't seen is anyone rolling a fully loaded kayak that's loaded for a 2 week trip. Rolling an empty kayak. Rolling a loaded kayak, I assume, is a whole different beast

If you do it as I demonstrate in the video, it's actually easier with a loaded kayak. Just slow down a bit.

@@DancingWithTheSea I am a new paddler, like, new new. I just kayaked for the first time today on a regular sit-on-top rental that was pretty wide. I had so much fun that I went out and bought an Eddyline touring kayak. I know it's more advanced going to the touring side but I want to learn. Your videos have been hugely helpful in breaking the fear of the dreadful roll over and I have started developing a new mentality about what kayaking is because of you. Any advice for a new paddler about to start his journey on the touring side?

So many of these cheap big box store kayaks they are selling now have high back seats and tall cock pits that will restrict your movements.
