    Thanks for the comment. Yes getting the blade fully out of the water before you start can help get you into an efficient position to get the blade nice and wide.

    Easiest way get a bat or gp canoe join a club and have some pool lessons, I thought I was good but being in a pool with mates I was in Durham kayak club I lived by the sea but one of my friends in the club made the whole thing easy. Whereas trying to imitate books ( in my case) or vids is not going do much except bruised thighs trying to roll without technique.

    A free tip for everybody that I received for free, early February 2022. Let’s assume you are attempting rolls, again and again. Your face emerges, but then you lose it and you’re back upside down, swimming or er…drowning. The tip i received…..when you are ready to right yourself, paddle in position, as you make the pull down…. Fix your eyes on the tip, or where the tip is if the water is murky then keep fixed on the tip of the paddle the whole time. Again…watch the very tip of the paddle through the entire sweep and pull procedure. It made my rolls 100% successful from then on. That’s with both Greenland and Euro paddle. The tip works because, if you do so, the action actually contributes to the body twist and unwinding core strength without trying to be conscious of it. Happy rolling!

    @@onlineseakayaking Not all paddlers? The contortion action of getting your focus fixed on the paddle tip brings together the three important elements 1. unwinding body torsion, 2. the hip movement and 3. bringing the head up last in one smooth no-need-to-think-about it anymore. Good for all I’d say.

    @@josephinebennington7247 just watch for paddlers rotating their body in the same direction the blade is being swept. When some paddlers watch the blade they rotate their body so the body is facing the water. An efficient roll is when the back is on the water as you recover and so you would achieve this more easily by looking up. I do agree though that looking at the paddle when doing your roll does help with the key points you make.

    it should not make a huge amount of difference with different feather. No matter what feather paddle you are using you may still have to rotate the blade a little to get into your set up position. We have a lesson on this in the full course

    Grab the spare paddle on your front deck and use it. In my case that would be half of a Euro paddle. Once up, snap the other half together and fetch your main paddle. Might want to practice rolling with just half a paddle first and get a feel for it. Hope that helps.

    Why are the Brittish so keen on C to C? And in the sweep roll, flippning you head far back on your way up make things so much easier. And so does a greenland paddle...

    people tend to end up in a backwards position after performing a sweep roll. best conditions to capsize right again in heavy sea. here in germany we learn C to C always first because the movement is easier to learn and you always end upright in ready position in your kayak.

    @@macgeifer8850 A bad advise i m o. Not only do you risk your shoulders by doing this - you fight against the waves instead of following them. The sweeproll is so smooth and gentle to your body - you become one with the sea. And you don't need to rely on force.

    @@erikwahlberg448 I am not an rolling expert so forgive me but why is C-C fighting against the waves? there are also several mixed forms and I guess everyone will use at the end what works best for him or her. not saying sweeproll is bad, I just said what happens if people learn lazy rolls. it not only about getting you and your boat upright again somehow with the least amount of effort.

    Interesting, but for me the instruction 'shed the tension from the blade' is too abstract, what does it actually mean in practice? And of course, as with all these videos, what would be REALLY useful would be video or diagrams from the point of view of the kayaker. Trying to absorb kinaesthetic information visually is hard, but from the 'wrong way up' almost impossible!

  • @ollilehtonen7874

    @ollilehtonen7874

    Жыл бұрын

    To my understanding it could be taken as getting rid of the tension/drag/resistance caused (usually) by having too much climbing angle on the sweeping blade. In sweep roll, if you have negative climbing angle your blade dives too deep but it does so quite effortlessly. On the other hand, if there is too much climbing angle in the blade, it probably stays close to the surface but at the same time causes too much drag and slows down the movement (i.e. instead of turning the kayak with your hip flick you end up using your efforts to move your paddle). I would say that if you can see the climbing angle in your blade, there is already too much of it. Instead, you should feel the correct angle through your paddle by concentrating on the sweeping motion and when it feels effortless.
