How to ride a Harley Davidson 48 Motorcycle - Shifting, Rev Matching, Clutch Control

Ойын-сауық

An updated video on how to ride a motorcycle. I had an older video using my Honda Grom, but with this one, I'll show myself riding in the streets and narrating it as I go. I also show how to rev match (blipping the throttle), and using clutch control, which I feel is very important. Enjoy and ride safe!

You always want to pull in the clutch. It stops the bike from moving. Then I look around for a way out and not just at the car in front. It's really muscle memory at this point and my hands just automatically do it lol 🤙

You helped me learn to ride in your Grom video. You took the time to do a lot of explaining. Thanks! Found you when you were doing Onyx content. Then you sold your Onyx around the same time I was selling mine. I liked your Grom content and your video as to your preference between the Grom and Onyx made me buy a Honda Monkey as my first bike. 1 year later I’m looking to get a Triumph Speed Twin as my next bike. Stay safe and thanks for your content.

What are your thoughts on getting a 48 as a bike? Would you recommend a 48 over an 883 for someone to start out with? I've been riding around on a Grom for a few months but looking to get on a bigger bike now.

  • @kevlarxkoffee

I think beginners get intimidated by the engine size number. 1200cc vs 883cc. It's not that far off. And Harleys are not like sport bike engines. I think anyone can handle a 1200 engine. The engine size is so close that it really comes down to the style you want. Overall, I like the 48 look more. The peanut tank looks really nice. I would have kept it if I only did local rides. So yes, 48 for beginners. Even a Street Bob is fine 🤙

Some say if u have it in neutral and get hit from behind, you'll fly into the middle of traffic. If it's in gear, the bike will stall out. Others say to have it in gear so you're ready to move out of the way or take off if a crazy driver comes up. Do what u feel is more safe for you.

  • @kevlarxkoffee

Yeah everything happens really fast. Hold on the clutch, rev the throttle first then immediately shift down and let out the clutch. I want to say shifting down and letting out the clutch near the same time is the key. Just do it slow first and then faster over time. I plan on making an updated video about it 🤙

It’s weird. My brain is having hard time processing using your feet to shift through the gears rather than your hands like on a car. And don’t get me started on the clutch looking like a brake on a regular bike and having come off the throttle while holding down the clutch then shifting with your foot. I can see myself messing that up man. It’s a lot to remember. Also on a car you can double shift the gears, 2 to 4 etc. can you do that on a bike? What about stopping in the gear you are in. You can do that on a car. Is it the same for a bike? All this is legit scaring me from passing my bike test.

I was the same way when I first started years ago. You'll form muscle memory and it becomes easy. Just ride around the neighborhood to practice first 🙌

And yes it's similar to a car, you can hold in the clutch and shift as many times as you want. Just be careful and I suggest going one at a time as you're beginning. Watch all of my tutorial videos, I show that you can shift down multiple gears with the clutch in. Be careful and be safe 🙌
