You mention boards... a 6'4 Ghost is probably the gold standard barrel board these days I guess, but then I see guys on 5'2 fishes ride sick barrels (like William Aliotti), or on 7'2 twin pins (like Mikey February). How much would you say is psychology when it comes to boards, and how much is really about the board itself?

Claim it, I was always thankful I didn't die when making a barrel. Somehow I developed a habit of dragging my back foot's toes into the wave to stall and pull up. Great tips. It's good you emphasize strong paddling and commitment. You see so many bad wipeouts when people are too nonchalant.

Sick video! Some ideas: backside barrel riding, transition from paddling to rail grab and foot positioning on steep drops (backside), last second take-off under the lip when hollow ( specifically pushing board under water combined with frog kick technique and 2-3 "downhill" paddles, angling take-off with last paddle etc. ). All details help to get barreled! Thanks a lot and keep it up

@@nicvonrupp1671 that would be sick! Is great to learn tech details from your pro perspective 👌 I think for the intermediate shortboarder the hardest thing is to get consistently into those waves (I mean something like hollow 6ft European scale). Good technique is critical. Especially with rare good waves and all the advanced surfers in the lineup there are only a few waves left. Everything must be perfectly executed on the few opportunities. No one wants people to waste good waves! Thanks for answering.

I love what you said at the end about claiming a good barrel, who cares throw your hands up and let it out ! Everyone’s so picky these days about claims, but I agree most with what you said who cares what other people think it’s your wave ! Keep killing it and keep the Von Froth Stoke alive much love from Cali !

I just missed one thing. What's the best way to ditch the board if you don't make it out of the barrel? Dive in front of it? Step back and send it forward? I'm just guessing you don't want to tumble around in the same part of the wave as your board.. to minimize risk of injury or breaking your board.. What do you guys do when the barrel close out and you didn't manage to turn out of it towards the beach?

Nice to know you have a wider nose to help paddle but I guess not too wide to make it catch or less responsive. Volume in rails and rocker is also good to understand what works so I guess riding ghost with flatter nose rocker and pulled in tail with bit more rocker and volume under the chest is the go.

Hi Nic I started surfing last year and ive been trying to catch barrels at carcavelos. I think you would be an expert on that specific wave. Where should I position myself in 4 to 7 ft carcavelos. Ive only caught one barrel at guincho where it is more mushy but I really want a big wide carcavelos barrel. Whenever I paddle in I feel like im either to close where the popup is extremely hard and I get destroyed doing the 2 strokes method. Doing the big board method(only have one board 6,0 should work) I go over the falls. How should I approach this and other heavier beachbreak barrels?
