You mention boards... a 6'4 Ghost is probably the gold standard barrel board these days I guess, but then I see guys on 5'2 fishes ride sick barrels (like William Aliotti), or on 7'2 twin pins (like Mikey February). How much would you say is psychology when it comes to boards, and how much is really about the board itself?

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the tip on paddling underneath your board. Surfed twice since I saw this vid and it made a huge improvement in my paddling from catching to getting in the right spot. I appreciate it.
Great tips bro! You are an amazing surfer ! You and Nathan Florence are my favorite guys to listen to when it comes to tips on surfing. Thanks again for the amazing tips!!! Keep up the great work bother!!!
Thanksssss. Best advise is on emotions and share the stoke; that was a wise and good human lesson
Nic u r the man! I'm in Bali, I saw u r back in Indo. I hope I'll be lucky enough to meet u once and have a sesh with u!
Claim it, I was always thankful I didn't die when making a barrel. Somehow I developed a habit of dragging my back foot's toes into the wave to stall and pull up. Great tips. It's good you emphasize strong paddling and commitment. You see so many bad wipeouts when people are too nonchalant.
Sick video! Some ideas: backside barrel riding, transition from paddling to rail grab and foot positioning on steep drops (backside), last second take-off under the lip when hollow ( specifically pushing board under water combined with frog kick technique and 2-3 "downhill" paddles, angling take-off with last paddle etc. ). All details help to get barreled! Thanks a lot and keep it up

@@nicvonrupp1671 that would be sick! Is great to learn tech details from your pro perspective 👌 I think for the intermediate shortboarder the hardest thing is to get consistently into those waves (I mean something like hollow 6ft European scale). Good technique is critical. Especially with rare good waves and all the advanced surfers in the lineup there are only a few waves left. Everything must be perfectly executed on the few opportunities. No one wants people to waste good waves! Thanks for answering.

Amazing video Nic! Tips from the pro! Thanks for sharing
Been surfing for thirty years but learned a couple of things today from frothy! Thanks vonnie
Legend ! That was killer ! Love the Von Froth youtube channel ! Stoked to be a part of the Von Froth family it’s just all about frothing out of your mind ! I love what you said at the end about claiming a good barrel, who cares throw your hands up and let it out ! Everyone’s so picky these days about claims, but I agree most with what you said who cares what other people think it’s your wave ! Keep killing it and keep the Von Froth Stoke alive much love from Cali !
thanks for sharing and I cannot wait for the next one.
Nic eres INCREIBLE this is AMAZING! come back to Costa Rica's SALSA BRAVA or PLAYA HERMOSA for more BARRELS!! PURA VIDA
so hard to find a video on how to pump, but what nic said makes so much sense about rotating the hips, throwing your arms and body up the wave, and releasing pressure off the back foot. got it!

Young Mr. Von Rupp, thank you for your hard work your Chanel bringings much enjoyment to my life . I used to travel the world as a proud member of the right foot forward crew. From Tavarua to G- Land. Iam 56 and suffering from a serious health issue . You being able to do what we love to do most makes my day . Your videos and hard work helps me when iam having bad days and cannot walk. Thank you again. Next to Sky Brown you are my favorite of all the right foot forward crew. Man Turns never go out of style. ✌🙏🤙 ps. Your style is perfect for the six channel gutter bottom
Amazing video Nic!!! Now I only need a barreling wave😆
What you are doing especially in terms of your barrel riding , backside and frontside, is incredibly difficult. I just want to say I really respect your technical ability coupled with style. I know you must have put a ton of hours in the water, taken some beatings, and just have a good ole healthy dose of raw talent. Thank you for the how-to's for average joes like me.

Here is an idea.some basic tricks and tips to improve your surfing
I just missed one thing. What's the best way to ditch the board if you don't make it out of the barrel? Dive in front of it? Step back and send it forward? I'm just guessing you don't want to tumble around in the same part of the wave as your board.. to minimize risk of injury or breaking your board.. What do you guys do when the barrel close out and you didn't manage to turn out of it towards the beach?
🔥

@@nicvonrupp1671 massive thank you. Waiting for how to ride a backside barrel
Nice to know you have a wider nose to help paddle but I guess not too wide to make it catch or less responsive. Volume in rails and rocker is also good to understand what works so I guess riding ghost with flatter nose rocker and pulled in tail with bit more rocker and volume under the chest is the go.
@nicvonrupp1671

very good feedback, I also have the feeling with the noses get too wide its catchier and less responsive

Hi Nic I started surfing last year and ive been trying to catch barrels at carcavelos. I think you would be an expert on that specific wave. Where should I position myself in 4 to 7 ft carcavelos. Ive only caught one barrel at guincho where it is more mushy but I really want a big wide carcavelos barrel. Whenever I paddle in I feel like im either to close where the popup is extremely hard and I get destroyed doing the 2 strokes method. Doing the big board method(only have one board 6,0 should work) I go over the falls. How should I approach this and other heavier beachbreak barrels?
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This is good and all but this is more about pulling into 10ft+ barrels where you know you're going to get shacked. I was hoping more explanation on 6ft and below so cal where it's tricky and knowing how to get in but get out. It's not so hard getting in to barrels in CA but getting out need help.

If you haven’t already, check out Brett Barleys video on tiny tube riding. Although 6 foots not tiny it give really good tips for positioning in the barrel which could apply even up to overhead barrels we get in California.
Von Froth and Yungumaj #teambrusco
Perhaps another point is that many average surfers look up at where the wave is starting to barrel ahead of them while they are in the barrel and where you look is where you go so they land up going up the waveface and eventually over the falls?
Getting us frothed up to surf when the waves are so bad...pure evil haha
