How To Restore - Old Rusted Kerosene Lamp (Lantern) - Complete Restoration

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This lantern is one of the smallest storm lanterns ever made.
It was really rusted and therefore very hard to restore.
In fact, there was the tank cap, that couldn't be saved due to the severe rust.
So I temporarily replaced it with the 3D printed one, I designed.
About the lantern.
The lantern was made in Germany by a company called Fröhlich & Wolter - FROWO. The Frowo No. 45 Was produced between the years 1937 and 1943.
It is 16.5 cm high and is designed cold-blast lantern.
It is made of crimped-together sheet-metal stampings.
The cold-blast design means that the cold fresh air is drawn in from around the chimney and is then fed through the side tubes to the flame, making it burn brighter.
Thanks for watching.

I found that soaking it in ammonia cleans off a LOT of stuff, including most of the rust.

Not sure what you used to seal the fount (tank) but you may want to consider using a small amount of automotive gas tank sealer. Coat the inside real well and let it cure and it should seal up all those hole and the different fuels will not eat through it. Great restoration. That cute little lamp turned out great!

Great job! I have a frowo kind of like this that I will be working on soon. Part of the burner is missing, and the large stamped part that attaches after the burner has a major rust hole in it. I wonder if it is possible to repair something like that or if I have to go buy a replacement.

what is that paste that you use to seal the holes? I never knew you can do that... I wish I knew I throw away a few because I thought it was a done deal.

I used 2 component acrylic paint. I was thinking about some high temp color. But after getting some information from other restorators, I chose regular colour. It kinda burns on surface... So far so good.
