    Hi Walter. Interesting. Does it scratch off?

  • @david_porthouse
    @david_porthouse2 ай бұрын

    I have been using Sheffco or Nushine on my silver plated items for over thirty years It's not cheap, but a little goes a long way and it does the job of keeping everything brilliant. Try plating a copper penny with it, and then try scratching it off. That is indeed real silver that is going on. Normal silver plate is about twenty microns (millionths of a metre) thick. The silver plate going on to your copper item can hardly be more than one or two microns thick, and once the copper is covered, the layer of silver is unlikely to get any thicker over time because it relies upon copper displacing silver to do the plating. Still if you are lucky you now have a silver plated item that you can keep shiny indefinitely, although I suspect that you are being a bit optimistic with an item as worn as your copper. Trying alternating this type of silver polish with the aluminium foil/baking soda method of polishing silver. Experiment to see what works best.

    Hi Stan. Silver plate and epns items are basically a micro thin layer of silver over Copper or bronze. Brass or nickel basically a non Feria metal. Years of cleaning will wear the silver away exposing the copper underneath. This solution replaces the lost silver and covers the base metal.
