How To Restore an Old Power Amplifier from 1977 | Retro Repair Guy Episode 2

Ғылым және технология

Retro Repair Guy restores an old audio Power Amplifier from 1977. The Hitachi HA-330 OCL type amp. For this vintage electronic repair, I had to replace all the capacitors and make a small modification required to upgrade the two larger ones and give this vintage amplifier a new life.

    Great video! I'm a huge Hitachi fan and i pretty got all their best pieces and the 330 is part of them. Even if it was one of the smaller model it is truly an amazing little performer. I could live only with that one and be happy and that says a lot. Keep up the good work!

    Well hello folks. Just two days ago I bring a lost puppy home here - HA-3500 it's alive and works. I was excited and almost wet the floor too. As I had to go boldly I just went on my own dancing and singing playing star again. Hook up JBL 630 later Celestion DL4. Now the time to recap this one plus JVC RX801V or Yamaha RX300 or 500. I've got a Chinnon (Dixon's then own brand name) tuner amp with Wharfedale speakers bought in 1975 & still going strong tho the radio is a bit crackly, but connecting my Technics cd player it has a beautiful warm sound. The Chinnon was made in Japan & the knobs have a excellent weightiness when adjusting. Quality unlike now.

    Hi! Yeah this is especially true when the machines building the boards put just a tiny bit it makes it hard to suck anything out. Also some boards use a very low lead or lead free solder so by adding it again makes it easier to remove. This was the second video I ever uploaded. I have the HA-330 and am using it in A+B mode with bi-amped KEF Q3's, and a bluetooth tube preamplifier, it literally blows up people's minds when they hear it, that this mini beast of an amplifer with 20 plus yr old speakers sounds better than anything modern they have heard. Am pairing it with a wired Raspberry Pi running Volumino soon for lossless listening.

  • @RetroRepairGuy

    @RetroRepairGuy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it does because it's an OCL amplifier capable of high output at low frequencies. Today OCL amps are generally found in very high-end components that cost thousands. I had not heard it since I was very young, so it surprised me as well, knowing it was such an amp. If you haven't done so already, you should really consider replacing the 45-year-old capacitors to prevent any damage to the transistors as they are almost impossible to find. The cost wasn't too high, but it was a lot of work. Only looks easy in a 20-minute video.

    If I may suggest: replacing thermal coupling compound under the finals, the TO3s, would be a good idea along with verifying whether crucial resistors have drifted in value another. Bias setting and DC offset, if present, is another set of adjustments worth checking on a unit of this age. There often is a PIO cap on the mains, which must be replaced with a modern fail safe cap. Was expecting a totally different testing to music blaring, 1k sine into dummy load while operating pot and switches to verify on the scope and via headphones whether spraying some contact was effective for a start. Nice unit, they don't make them like that anymore.

  • @RetroRepairGuy

    @RetroRepairGuy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi there! Thank you for the suggestions they are always welcome. While this was only the second episode, there are sometimes things I do off camera, like in this instance adjust the idle current of the output transistor which is done once the unit has been on for at least five minutes. However I chose a different direction for the videos and make them more concise; I don't want for example people watching me solder for half an hour or do any scope testing unless it is necessary. I don't want to make this show into a step by step "how to" that would last an hour without resolve but rather for people to experience a restoration process from beginning to end and experience closure, which includes playing music to demonstrate the unit is functioning in lieu of having a scope hooked up to it. P.S. As for the TO3s, there was testing done on them (off camera) and I did look for them but they, and every replacement, was always discontinued. Although they are working, if I had them available, I would have just changed them and included the process in the video.

  • @paulb4661

    @paulb4661

    @@RetroRepairGuy Had some heatsink compound turn to powder after decades of service and especially in light of some of these TO3s becoming unobtainium, as you point out, solid thermal coupling is a must. I'm not suggesting replacing finals, just the paste, because ... they don't make them like that anymore ! Matching any trannies is a pain and if the manafacturer had a curve tracer at hand, the chances of getting it "more" right are slim, unless you have dozens at your disposal. As to longer vids, I wouldn't mind, but I get your point. Thank you for clearing that up !

However, for the matching cassette that I restored, both lamps were burned. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaCKsrqNgMqxYrA.html I replaced them with regular lamps as it keeps it original. Just like a regular light bulb you can of course replace it with an LED. Hi David. Very nice amplifier looks similar. The problem with the power transformers is they are very difficult to find new that match. Not like the old days. However, with a bit of fiddling, you could replace it with another but you'll have to have the service manual and make sure of voltages, etc. I find it simpler to purchase another used for parts. This place has it listed but says "not in stock" and "no substitute" but it looks like you could order it www.ued.net/ued/viewItemAction.do?itemCode=SHARTRNP0506AFZZ Because it's a Sharp part, many times the same part was used in another amplifier that was much cheaper (same with car parts for example). And you could purchase a used Sharp at a much lower cost. Here is the service manual ldsound.info/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Optonica_SM-1515-H_service_manual.pdf For the rh-ix1066afzz there is an NTE parts equivalent NTEOBS-NLA. Hi Viraj. When you say overheating, what exactly happens? Has the amplifier ever been fixed /serviced? All kinds of things can cause overheating. How clean is it inside? Dirt is something that can cause overheating. If it was ever fixed, I would check the wiring. Things like bad grounds can also cause this. It would also be important to remove the transistors, clean the heatsink and then put in new plastic or silicon micas and some new thermal paste. Also make sure the environment around the amp allows it to vent. For example don't stick anything that would block the the holes in the cover. Let me know and thanks for watching.

    Put a Technics badge over the Hitachi and I wouldn't even question it, the speaker termination on the back is definitely not Technics.... I wonder if it was out sourced? As for the power supply filter capacitors, you didn't say if you looked around for something that might fit better, even if it was rated for a higher voltage and capacity.... Which might have been large enough to fit the correct holes in the PCB (not that I have a problem with the final outcome) but I do believe that there was a good possibility that something might have existed that would have fit perfectly and apart from looking better, the amplifier could have benefited from the extra capacity.... Also, did you remove the TO3 output transistors to refresh the thermal paste? New old stock is very hard to find, new Chinese stock might not be as good as the original transistors even though they are 40 years old LoL... You certainly don't want them to die! I have a kit amplifier that uses the TO66 transistors which were Australian made, we haven't made anything down under in a very long time and those things are unobtainium! They were the 2N3055 before the 2N3055 existed and while I can use other transistors, even the Electronics Australia magazine which the kit amplifier came from in 1973 also showed how to use the then new plastic transistors instead at a later date but there's something special about those metal encapsulated transistors that used gold in their construction.... But the sound! I have more amplifiers than I know what to do with but it's my favourite! There's something that it's doing that the others don't, I originally got it because it looked very 70's and it was ugly and I needed something like that to gut out and fit a new power supply and class D amplifier with as much output power as possible, I wanted something that would shock and awe people but I made the mistake of plugging it in and listen to it while expecting it to be terrible ( I mean, how good is an amplifier going to be that came as a kit from a magazine right?).... Yeah I was hit with shock and awe! The ugly duckling turned out to be a swan in disguise!

    Hi Peter! I don't know if it was out sourced. It does have the "Made in Japan" mark and it was built in 1977 but obviously there were probably many parts similar and built by a certain company that were in many of the different units. I did not put as much explanation because this was only my second episode and I did not have a set format yet. As for the capacitors, yes I did look around with all my suppliers. I was unable to find perfectly fitting ones. However, I remember finding a site at the time that could manufacture them if for example there were 2-3 values in the same. Of course this was very expensive and since the other legs had no value, this was replaceable with a standard capacitor. But this was the closest match that I found so luckily there was that extra hole in the motherboard and the other leg fit in and the tiny jumper was the only solution. But they still grip on to the motherboard like the original ones. NOS I would never buy because caps have a shelf life of 15-20 years so even if they are never used, they dry up and you risk blowing the amp with New Old Stock. But transistors are OK if you can find them. Yes, I removed the transistors and put new paste and found quality thermo pads from NTE to replace the plastic ones. Again, I did not film or show any of this at the time whereas now I try to show/explain everything I do. You certainly don't want these transistors to die. I had looked before starting work on it if they could be replaced in case but no luck. I never turned it on before I began the work because I did not want to blow anything and I knew this unit's history since it was my uncle's and it sat there unused for almost twenty years. So I knew the transistors were OK but that the caps had to be replaced before I even turned it on to make sure not to blow them. You might enjoy a more recent video of a drum machine I completely ripped apart and restored. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaOjk499g93JZaQ.html Thanks so much for watching!

    I looked it up, I saw you had a typo, the Pioneer SA-6300 looks very similar and from 1976 but I have never seen or heard it. I'm sure you can find a technician locally.
