I've been following you since the beginning and all your videos (descriptions, tips...) are very good to excellent. Really, I have nothing but praise. Until this video... As you are the creator, I expected a lot. Sorry, but that's how it is. NHF, this is criticism in good faith. I do things a little differently, which doesn't mean there isn't an even better way. I don't really have a lot of funds, so I mostly buy sets without boxes, and if a box happens to be offered at a reasonable price, it's usually in really bad condition (junk level). My way: I use very simple techniques that minimally disturb the external appearance, and return the form and condition of the box to approximately its original condition (of course, miracles are not possible, everything depends on the condition of the box). 1. if I can, without major physical damage, I tear off all the adhesive tapes. They have no place on boxes (my opinion). 2. traces of glue from the removed adhesive tape, it is easiest to remove using a soft cotton cloth soaked in gasoline for lighters or spot cleaning (eg Zippo). You have to work carefully (be patient) and there is no danger that the print on the box will be erased. Of course, if you rub rough for a long time unnecessarily, you will damage the print layer. Work sensibly! This should be done before starting the gluing! 3. when the box is torn, I use cardboard with similar characteristics as the original (eg cardboard from the back of a wall calendar) for reinforcement (only on the inside of the box). I also use such cardboard to replace the missing part. The boxes are symmetrical, so it is not a problem to reconstruct the missing part. For gluing larger surfaces where it is necessary for the joint to be immediately solid, I use universal glue (eg Pattex universal). Care should be taken when applying the glue so that it is not visible, because the glue retains its color even after drying! And for all other repairs I use wood glue (eg Pattex Wood). When the wood glue dries, it becomes transparent! 4. If it is necessary to restore the shape of the original cardboard or to connect the loose edges (8 in the places where the box opens), I dilute the wood glue with water and moderately wet the cardboard from the inside with a brush. It is necessary to press well with two flat surfaces and let it dry well (4-5 hours)... To prevent it from sticking to those surfaces, I put a piece of nylon (eg a thin nylon bag for the freezer). After that, the cardboard hardens and keeps the shape in which it was dried. 5. repair of the cartridge (inner box) a) plastic transparent: I fix all unevenness (most often indentations in the corners or creases) on the plastic part of the inner part with a hair dryer. You should proceed carefully with the temperature, the blowing strength and the blowing distance. Definitely be careful. When the technique is mastered, the result is close to ideal. b) styrofoam: bruises, dents, deformation, also with a hair dryer and very carefully! Depending on the degree o damage, the results vary from slightly better to excellent. These tips are the result of personal experience and are written in good faith. I am not responsible for any damage caused by using these tips! Of course, I'd love to hear from others how how they restoring their damaged boxes. Let's enjoy the LEGO 80s!

Thanks for the comprehensive comment! That's a lot of useful advice so I pinned it for future viewers to get tips from as well. I did use some of your techniques (taking original tape off) but I didn't use any glue in the repair, so I will have to investigate that if/when I repair another box from the later 80s. I only used the strong gorilla tape for this video. I think still with those techniques the tears would be visible though, especially in the corners where the flaps tear completely away - I would love to see some photos of your results! Feel free to link pictures of some of the boxes you have repaired. I should try to restore the styrofoam in my 7740 and 7750 boxes with a hair dryer as those have some damage - it reminded me that a while ago I used a hair dryer on some damaged Nerf darts to restore the foam.

@@Reker1million No problem. As soon as I find enough time, I will be happy to shoot a collection of boxes that have been restored using the described techniques. My only regret is that I didn't take a picture of the boxes before the restoration :-( because I didn't think that someone might be involved in repairing the packaging. Actually, in a way, this video of yours cheered me up, because I found out that I'm not the only one in restoration attempts.

Great, I will definitely take a look when you post content about them! And yes most people don't care about these old boxes enough to repair them... unfortunately...

Wow, the end result is really good. I can't imagine how much time and hard work it took to restore the box to such good shape

Thanks for the nice comment! Took about 6 hours with a lunch break, most of it was spent cutting the tape brackets.

Really good result! The original box was pretty beat up, but at least the original owner didn't throw it away! Boxes really do get more interesting the older they are.

Yep I'm glad the owner didn't throw it away. The older boxes are so much nicer than the newer ones, they had storage trays and even the lids, plus the excellent box art and flip top box... now it's just cardboard shells.

Nice work 👍. The only sets i want in the box are the old DACTA sets. Luckily they often just sat in cabinets at schools and are often in good condition

I wish that were the case for 12V boxes! So many kids just threw them away or heavily damaged them which is why they're so expensive and rare now.

Good job on the restoration job ! My 7727 box is in lower condition than yours overall, and I will eventually be able to improve it a little bit thanks to yours tips. A new transparent foil would be welcome, so I'll check if I can do something similar. Thanks !
