How To: Rescue Breathing/Ventilation

Providing rescue breaths is a critical skill that can save lives in the event a patient becomes apneic (stops breathing). Most of the time a patient that is apneic will also be in cardiac arrest and two rescue breaths will be given after every thirty compressions during CPR; however, occasionally a patient will become apneic and still have a pulse in which case one rescue breath should be given every six seconds. Each breath should be given over approximately one second and should be just enough to see the chest rise gently.
Mouth to mouth has a high degree of risk from disease so rescuers should look at getting some kind of barrier device to keep themselves safe. The products shown in this video are listed below:

Incidentally, just last night had a difficulty breathing patient arrest once she got in the box (brady'ed down to PEA). Other than the IO, we ran a BLS code; dropped an NPA (she was clenched), solid CPR/Lucas, and good ventilations. Got a pulse back a few minutes later. So yeah, all that to say good BLS skills matter (definitely surprised me that we got the pulse back).

So the chest compressions are only to start the heart and only needed when there's no pulse. While the ventilation is needed with or without a pulse? I also noticed you didn't explain about checking & clearing the airway before ventilation so that if there is any type of obstruction it doesn't get pushed further with eath ventilation. Is the throat supposed to be examined always or sometimes?

Would it be possible for a company like NAR to make a nose plug style BVM bag? Insert nose plugs cover mouth and give oxygen .. the bag could be re used while the nose plugs get tossed.. this style would allow for maximum storage with the ability to give oxygen to more than one person without needing a new kit. This could be a very unsafe product idea but I’m just thinking out loud in the comments.

A pocket BVM is three to four times the price of a normal (non-compact one time use) BVM and still one time use. One can't replace just the BVM, one has to buy a whone new unit, case and all. If one is operating from a vehicle a normal BVM might be a better option and save a pocket BVM for when one really needs compactness e.g. working on foot from a backpack.

No, with an advanced (ALS) airway in place (ETT, Trach, King airway etc), you give continuous ventilations at a rate of 10 per minute. 30:2 is only for when you are using a mask to ventilate.

Let's assume worst case : drowning, so compressions and rescue breaths required by one rescuer, ambulance / coastguard already called, no ETA. What's least fiddly placing, using a Laerdal Pocket Mask with O2 inlet, head strap and blocking the 02 inlet port or repeatedly placing, using a Laerdal Pocket Mask without O2 inlet, without head strap.
