How To: Rescue Breathing/Ventilation
Providing rescue breaths is a critical skill that can save lives in the event a patient becomes apneic (stops breathing). Most of the time a patient that is apneic will also be in cardiac arrest and two rescue breaths will be given after every thirty compressions during CPR; however, occasionally a patient will become apneic and still have a pulse in which case one rescue breath should be given every six seconds. Each breath should be given over approximately one second and should be just enough to see the chest rise gently.
Mouth to mouth has a high degree of risk from disease so rescuers should look at getting some kind of barrier device to keep themselves safe. The products shown in this video are listed below:

I'm currently taking an EMR class and we're going over this so this video is perfect !
Just when I was about to ask for a video about artificial ventilation you uploaded one. Such great timing. Thankyou for taking the time to create these videos, really helping me study for a remote medic course I will be completing soon
The best CPR that I have seen. Thank you a lot
Another awesome video sam. I just learned this on Wednesday but your Video still was really helpful as always!
Just took my BLS test and passed. Thank you!
I am currently doing the EMT class so this video is good for me thank u.
Great video, very informative. thanks for posting

Hi. My name is Greg Armstrong from Micro BVM. I would love to learn more from you about your expreince with the Pocket BVM. Can you please write me at info@microbvm? Thank you
Thank you for your instruction 😊
Great info and pro tips!!!
Awesome video! Really informative.
nice hints good explanation thank u so much
This was VERY helpful! I carry the smaller mask without the bag, but have the full bag system in a larger kit. I didn't know about the BVM compact system. I'll be getting that.
Great video!!!
Thanks for sharing! I got a face shield in my edc, but it has some sort of a one way valve that is more substantial than those cheap ones. Pocket masks are pretty bulky but i may just get one for the car kit.
Lifeguard here just reviewing!! Nice vid
Thank you Sam!!
Very useful. Thank you.
I love u Sam..Got a lot of tips from ur videos.
Love to see an ECG video
Incidentally, just last night had a difficulty breathing patient arrest once she got in the box (brady'ed down to PEA). Other than the IO, we ran a BLS code; dropped an NPA (she was clenched), solid CPR/Lucas, and good ventilations. Got a pulse back a few minutes later. So yeah, all that to say good BLS skills matter (definitely surprised me that we got the pulse back).

I'm assuming they mean the patients jaw was clenched hence the NPA over oral interventions.
thank you
讲的很好!
Thanks, sir
Thanks! Brazil in here
Another great video, Sam. Thanks again. Video request: Let's say you live in a rough neighborhood, and community watch is a bit on the hard core side. How would you split medical between a self-aid/boo boo kit IFAK advanced kit, in a bag maybe BVM, SAM Splints, etc...
Really interesting!
thanks so much love it so much I just love =)
BLS! I have a bunch of those key chain face shields but I carry Nitrile gloves in mine.
Great video.. let’s do a quick poll.. who of the viewers is happy to give mouth to mouth to a complete stranger? (With and without the face shield)
Hello sis, thanks for the great infos, how about for infants?
nice videos bro, i've seen most of your videos recently, i'm curious about how you deal with and treat while a MCI happens, especially how you do the triage, what's your equipment?
@eduardodiaz9354

林昱佑 🧤 and 🏷 basically very easy to triage pt walks is a green, pt has no abnormal breathing or pulses and alert is yellow, any serious injury and abnormal vitals signs altered mental status is red, pt not breathing you open the airway once if pt doesn’t breathe is black
What about a one way valve face shield? Practically same size as small cloth one but has a plastic piece with one way vaulted
Does the 1 way valve come with the pocket mask?
Thanks for the awesome content you save a lot of lives just by putting this good tips out there for people to know keep it up keep going may God bless you
Wanna buy some kit to practice with and for wen i pass out to use a list of some things i shoukd get
my face shield has a bio barrier and a piece that you stick in the mouth with two valves you think that's similar to a normal face mask for it and it's safe? Also the part that goes around the face is full rubber?
Where do you get that type of tall one-way valve chimney for your pocket masks? I can find only short ones. Does the tall type have a specific name? Thanks for any help.
Hey don't forget to add this video to your first aid playlist!
Do you have to be Emt certified to use a bvm
So the chest compressions are only to start the heart and only needed when there's no pulse. While the ventilation is needed with or without a pulse? I also noticed you didn't explain about checking & clearing the airway before ventilation so that if there is any type of obstruction it doesn't get pushed further with eath ventilation. Is the throat supposed to be examined always or sometimes?
if I give first aid to patient individually (because in my country, the ambulance takes 30 minutes to arrive at the scene and people hardly know what first aid is, meaning no one can help me holding the BVM) but I Don't want to stay too close to the patient's face. Should I still buy BVM?
the face shield is upside down is it not?
Question...the AHA doesn't teach rescue breaths any more, but does it stand to reason that a drowning or suffocation/asphyxiation might require them?
Thanks for the video, it was a long time coming and it was really well done! I was just curious, does your agency use the Oxylator or do you guys only ventilate with O2 and a BVM?

That makes a whole lot of sense, actually. How about when you need to intubate a patient, what do you use? Thank you very much for the response, it is greatly appreciated!
Would it be possible for a company like NAR to make a nose plug style BVM bag? Insert nose plugs cover mouth and give oxygen .. the bag could be re used while the nose plugs get tossed.. this style would allow for maximum storage with the ability to give oxygen to more than one person without needing a new kit. This could be a very unsafe product idea but I’m just thinking out loud in the comments.
Hey Sam. So if I were to use the face mask, how would I get air through the plastic? Is there like a hole for air in it or no?

A pocket BVM is three to four times the price of a normal (non-compact one time use) BVM and still one time use. One can't replace just the BVM, one has to buy a whone new unit, case and all. If one is operating from a vehicle a normal BVM might be a better option and save a pocket BVM for when one really needs compactness e.g. working on foot from a backpack.
Hi, how many seconds gap should be given in between the 2 breaths for the (30 compressions 2 breaths)
@dxd2191
5 жыл бұрын
You shold do the second one right after the first breath, because you want to minimize the time where you're not doing chest compressions
Quick question; is there a difference in breaths during cardiac arrest if my medic has intubated and secured the ET tube and delegated the breathing to me or is it still 2 breaths every 30 compressions?
@anthonypetrillo841
5 жыл бұрын
No, with an advanced (ALS) airway in place (ETT, Trach, King airway etc), you give continuous ventilations at a rate of 10 per minute. 30:2 is only for when you are using a mask to ventilate.
The yellow portable one. Question: Do you loosen the mask to let them breathe out?

Check with state and local guidelines. I’m pretty sure you would be covered by Good Samaritan’s laws, but you should get CPR certification before purchasing any equipment you’re untrained with.
Glad that I passed my Volunteer Paramedic Exams

Alex Marian What is that?
Do you need to do chest compression for APNIC patients before giving breaths every 6 seconds?
@PrepMedic
5 жыл бұрын
Only if they are in cardiac arrest. If they have a heartbeat then there is no reason to do compressions,
Please answer.Patient has severe facial trauma on mouth and nose and it has also sucking chest wound.What do you do to secure airway and to save patient ?

What about for a drowning ?
I got a bunch of colorful curvy plastic things in several sizes that came in a kit, I don't know what they're called but they're saposta prevent the throat from closing I think. Does anyone know what they might be called and is there a video on how they're used?
@danielhook8275

They are called airways, they are used to hold the tongue muscle up and make sure the airway isn't blocked down to the throat

OPA's or OroPharyngeal Airways and they are meant to be placed with the "hook" being placed in a fashion like a "C" that was turned 90 degrees to the right

Let's assume worst case : drowning, so compressions and rescue breaths required by one rescuer, ambulance / coastguard already called, no ETA. What's least fiddly placing, using a Laerdal Pocket Mask with O2 inlet, head strap and blocking the 02 inlet port or repeatedly placing, using a Laerdal Pocket Mask without O2 inlet, without head strap.
3:00 If someone walked up while you were putting that plastic over someone's face, they might think you're trying to kill them!
Dont you get light headed
*guy can't breathe* *Face shield covering the nose* : Yes but actually no
