How to Request a New Court Date
What if you are representing yourself and you receive a notice from the court with a hearing/motion/trial date that you can’t make? You need to ask the court for more time or a different date. How do you do that? What’s the proper procedure?
1. Write a letter to the court.
Include: Who you are (plaintiff or defendant)
The docket or case number
The name of the case
That you received a court date that you cannot make
Your reason for requesting a change of date*
2. Send a copy of your letter to your adversary
3. Follow up with a telephone call a few days before your court date.
*Make sure your reason is important. You won’t get far if it’s that you just don’t want to miss your favorite TV show!

I need to request an extension on responding to the Federal Judge to an order that she has given until Aug 12 to respond. Is there a form that I need to file to the courst for this extension or do I just write a letter
The court opens at 7:30am my court doesnt begin to 8:00 am and I'm required to show identification card which i dont have and I was released on friday with an ankle monitor and wasnt able to have time to call the house arrest officer or court to let them know that I need to reshedule due to no identification card can they still me pass through if I show them my paper court date or call them at 730 to reshedule before 8:00 when my court begins ? I have a question. If the reason that I give for not making the court date is that I'm still searching for proper representation, is this a legitamite reason to give, or should I try to make up some excuse?

If you have an attorney, you need to have that discussion with him or her. Your attorney can write/contact the court and request the adjournment. Of course, every state is different with respect to their court procedures. Your attorney can advise you as to the process. However, if you need a new court date and you have a lawyer, your first step is to advise your attorney. Good luck!

Not always. Most court rules require you to ask for consent from your adversary, but if they fail to respond or refuse to agree, you can ask the court in writing directly. Just explain that you attempt to obtain consent.

Good advice sir... I have a friend who has a lawyer representing him and he has request the court to give him a new status conference date. he has already done this two other times prior to his court appearance which was today December 06 2017 due to him not being satisfied with his court appointed public defender. so now his status conference date have been pushed back two months from today's date. question... how many more times can my friend request a new court date?

It really depends on the Judge and the reason for the adjournment. I have seen some judges give 4-6 adjournments while others will only give 1-2. There is really no way of knowing. I will tell you that judges are more willing to give additional adjournments if the reason for the request is valid, clear and reasonable. Thanks for watching!

So even if it's your first request for a court date postponement, one still needs to send them a letter or can it just be done verbally over the phone??

In general, you need to put the request in writing. Even in rare situations where I was able to obtain an adjournment over the phone, the court still directed me to send a confirming letter and to copy my adversary. If the matter is in a municipal court, the rules may be more relaxed and a phone adjournment might be permitted.

Just nasty my wifes lawyer says they sent me something as i got after the date they say sent late so i never get till after and judge careless of it since biased for men won't let even talk put up hand
Ya filed a reconsideration spent all day and money for copies told me to call at 1 pm when would not take it after 12pm court rules and was denied and was a women who knows this lied to me ,its all women in court who hate men
