How to Replace the Serpentine Belt | Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series

Welcome to another maintenance video in the Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series maintenance playlist. In this video Jafffa Adventures replaces the old serpentine drive belt and idler pulley. Toyota recommend inspecting the belt every 10,000km, but do not suggest a replacement interval.
I do and it's all documented in this video!
There are plenty of other "how to" maintenance videos in the library, in fact there is an entire playlist dedicated to the maintenance of your 200 Series Landcruiser.
Here is the link to the spares video that I referenced during this production.

Thanks again Terry. My 'new' (to me) 200 has 100K on the clock and was just serviced by Toyota. I reckon I'll be changing out the serpentine belt myself! My mate had a pulley let go when we were on the Gibb. It disintegrated (nowhere to be found) and the belt melted all over the place. We had a hell of a time getting that sorted - luckily we were only 90kays from a town and had a few in the convoy, but would have been more of a disaster if he was on his own or if we were several hundred kays from town. He had the car serviced by Holden pre-trip and told them it was a remote travel service, but they clearly do not check this stuff. Keep up the great content!

Geez & I thought I had a lack of room (obviously I need not complain 😉) I reckon that is a good run out of that pulley & belt especially with some of the harsh conditions you've had her in. Especially bulldust increases the wear on everything 10 fold. Those pulleys can be deceiving, one moment they sound ok, the next.... You know what!! It's something I keep a very close eye on, on my 4wd (well over 400,000 km) Running 2 alternators plus an engine driven compressor means my belt is not just very long but it has a couple of idlers too & I would not find a replacement in a hurry, so I not only regularly inspect it, I carry a spare new belt, plus a stock belt for Justin. They are not heavy & don't take up much room & yes, I also carry a spare new idler too! As you know, it's cheap insurance. knowing how to change it & having the gear to do so is a given but worth noting for those who don't do their own maintenance 😉P.S. knowing when to walk away & attack it again is something I struggle with (I'm a stubborn old bastard & don't like giving up, but it certainly minimises the stress levels & probably save the marriage too!! 🤣🤣

A handy video. I had a new belt to put on not knowing how old mine was as the car has 280k on it so it has probably had at least one new belt. It was your pully that I wanted to check and it was a bit like yours so swapped that out too. The belt was a bit tricky but managed it in about 10 minutes. Thanks Terry

Hi Terry, Forget the belt inspection 🧐 You can’t see what’s good or not. Original works for me also best… Put a new one on and renew it on 50k for being safe. Used car first thing: WP, all pulley and belts go new. Plus plastic fan and thermo unit. It’s aging from heat and 100k in Australia counts double or triple what is written in the books. Happy day Cheers

  • @JafffaAdventures

If it’s operating correctly there will be resistance in the hub when the engine is off and cold. You should not be able to spin the fan freely under these circumstances. If you have another vehicle you can compare to it can be helpful. The fan should also get a lot of resistance on it when the engine is hot, and you can hear it roar as it pulls air. Bottom line, if the vehicle still gets warm and your radiator is in good nick, it’s a probable cause. Cheers👍😎

Wow that’s hot, I’ve rarely see temps over 90 on my 200, and have never seen it get over 93. If you did not have excessively difficult or unusual driving conditions when it hit 120 (ie you can explain it with a specific reason) I would be giving your cooling system a thorough going over before hitting the CRS. Cheers mate👍😎
