How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a Nissan Xterra/Frontier

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video demonstrates the proper method for replacing the fuel sending unit assembly (fuel pump) on a 2005 Nissan Xterra. This video should work for all second generation Xterras 2005-2015 and second generation frontiers.
Here is the link where I bought the pump: amzn.to/2i4HZju

Great video, you will need to buy the Dorman 800-041 5/8in Fuel Line clips. They are designed to be a one time use part, they are on Amazon for less than $10. I saved $700 by doing it myself. Total time 3hrs start to finish, fuel pump $130, fuel clips $10, satisfaction not giving the dealership my money, priceless.

Just replaced my sender/sensor rather than the whole unit. Wanted to say many thanks for detailing the whole procedure. It really helped. I had one mishap where the fuel line wasn't fully clipped in (and spewed gas everywhere) so I had to drop the tank a second time, but I finally got it. Thanks a bunch man, and keep up with the videos, your content is awesome!

Just replaced Fuel Pump and sending unit in my daughter's 2007 Xterra. This is the best video on YT to help you though the job ! Using Amazon, I chose to by the Bosch unit for about $180 and added the Dorman plastic clips to my order. Glad I got the Dorman clips because the original ones broke. I would just get new ones and not waste time trying not to break the brittle originals. Also, I took an extra hour or so to pump out the 7 gallons of gas with a small hand pump, had to access the gas via the tank opening after disconnecting the filler tube. Couldn't fit floor jack under tank, and with it empty, you don't really need a jack anyway. Glad I had the impact wrench to loosen the tank strap bolts! Was tough to get the electrical connector on the new pump, very snug fit, Thought I was done but had a gas leak due to pressure hose not being fastened securely on the new pump, luckily there was no other issue. If I can do this, you can do it too! Thanks to Ry for the excellent video, I saved about $800 and spent 5 hours with my mistakes and stretch/water breaks. Now that I did it once, I could do it again in about 3 hrs. if tank is empty to start and I didn't waste time trying to save the original Dorman clips.

Ry, thanks so much for this video, as others, I was able to get this done and save at least 600 bucks. I did get the clips which I definitely recommend as I broke both, and by far the biggest challenge for me was getting the electrical plug disconnected. I had to press on the clip with pliers to get it out, but other than that it was pretty straightforward. Again, Thanks!!!

Got the P0463 code 1 week after buying my 2005 X at a used dealership :\, bought the assembly that you listed (hope that helps support the channel) and the light turned off before I could get around to dropping the tank! It keeps turning on and off, typically after I fill the tank up. I might just wait until the code stays put before doing this fix, and glad I have this vid for reference.

Compared to the Timing Chain job this was soooo much easier on my 05 Pathfinder. Hardest part was trying to figure out a lift to lower/raise the tank while keeping balance. I didn't feel comfortable with my floor jack and ratchet straps so i used my ATV lift and it wasn't perfect but it did work. Other than that it went pretty smoothly. I did break both clips but i prepared and already had a new pair that i bought with the new fuel pump...once done the truck fired right up and check engine light gone. And best of all i now know how much gas is in the tank lol.. Thanks again Ry your videos are the best very detailed and accurate. Keep doing what you do.

Thanks for posting this very helpful video. I have a couple of suggestions, first never take chances with fuel connectors. Replace any connectors or hoses that break while disassembling. Second, as others have mentioned clean the tank thoroughly before removing the fuel pump/sending unit. Thirdly, carefully inspect the electrical connector that plugs into the fuel pump for signs of overheating or corrossion as this can cause fuel pump problems even if the pump itself is good.

Well I have been putting it off but finally completely replaced my fuel pump and fuel tank on my 05 Frontier. The tank was leaking gas and every sealant I tried would not work for much more than a few months. The pump was still working but I figured I should replace it since I was in there and because it was over 10 years old. You're video helped a ton! Literally same exact process from what I could tell. Hardest part were those damn plastic electrical connections. I was able to get them all off without braking anything but it took forever. Anyways, thanks again for the great vid!

For those of you with the Gen 2 Frontiers that have had the fuel pump fail...did you have a period of time (before it failed for good) that your truck would randomly go dead while going down the road, but you could crank it right back up? My 2006 4.0 did this for at least 2 years before the fuel pump finally went out. It wasn't often, but about one a week it would randomly just die sitting at a stop light or even going down the road, and I'd just pop it in neutral and crank it right back up. In hindsight, I'm pretty sure now that was the early stages of the fuel pump failing.

Very good. It's a great video for the less experienced. You were slow and informational which is great compared to other guys I watch and don't explain things worth a damn. And there too fast as well. Anyways I'll keep watching your videos if you keep posting them for sure!

Great video. I was under the impression that the error code indicated a faulty fuel sending unit. I have this issue that the gauge reads correctly until about half full then drops to empty, The check engine light is also on. I need to fix my 05 Xterra and wondered if just replacing the fuel sending unit is enough or is it wise to go ahead and replace the entire fuel pump module just in case it is near failing? What do you think?

Thanks for another great video. On start up I noticed your vehicle had high revs why is this and where is the fuel filter situated? My Navara although it always starts you have to crank for a short while then it revs high when it starts could you offer any advice as to why this would be? I thought maybe a blocked fuel filter or faulty pump? Many Thanks.

2007 Frontier. Same issue. FLS. Decided to go ahead and have the whole fuel pump replaced since they had to drop the tank anyway (There was only a $25 price difference). Now, fuel gauge is stuck on 3/4 and wont move :-( any thoughts?

Thanks for your reply, but I didn't have time to reset the engine light, so I ran the frontier with engine light on, and wallha, light went off by itself. And that was sure the problem, defective sending unit in fuel pump, the other defect the frontier had was radiator which I already changed out, and the other defect on this stupid truck is power distribution module, but have not noticed any bad symptoms on this thing. Called the dealership if any of these defects could be changed for free, but you already know it wouldn't be free. Don't buy the Nissan Frontier, nothing but problems, and it barely has 96,450 miles on it. Again thanks for the video, it sure helped us out a lot. Keep'm coming.

When you were dropping the tank you had to reach up to release the electric connection because there wasn't enough play. I didn't see at what point you disconnected the fuel line. How far were you able to drop the tank to get to that? Was there enough play in the fuel line to drop it all the way down?

I am thinking about just cutting a hole under the back seat after dropping the tank for future access. My Camry has access port from the factory and I don't see why not have that here.

I understand that the gas line filter is in this tank. Is it a part of the entire fuel pump system and if so, where is it? I understand that changing the filter is a scheduled maintenance item that I am dreading if it is infact a part of the fuel pump system.

Hi Ry . . . I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra and I'm not sure if it was bad gasoline I put in my car but it started leaving me on the highway. Suddenly, while driving, the car would die. I've checked the alternator and starter but a mechanic said it was the battery. Relative bought me a battery but it's small and now my Xterra stutters to turn on but then catches and turns on. My mom says it sounds like the fuel pump is clogged or not picking up gasoline. I've taken car to three mechanics and O'Reily's but to no avail. Any suggestions? I added HEET but I did wrong in not driving the SUV...I let it sit...I don't know if that messed it up more or the battery is too small that it's not enough power to power on engine quickly. Advice is much appreciated.

Hi Ry! Wondering what gas mileage your 4.0 gets? I have a Pathfinder w/ the same engine and I'm noticing a large increase in my fuel consumption over the 5 years since I have owned it. I have changed the spark plugs, maintain oil changes regularly and nothing really has changed. Its recording 12.5 MPG right now... Used to get almost 20 MPG before. Wondering if you have any ideas? Thanks.

Hello. I have a request for a video or even a quick answer. Who knows it may just be a simple thing. On my 2015 Xterra the fuel door on my car (appears to be similar to your fuel door) does not spring close or remain open. Is it requiring a new spring? Or is it a quick snap back in place type of thing. Thank you for your assistance!
