How to replace the cartridge in a mixer tap

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Replacing a ceramic cartridge in a mixer tap is normally easy with the right tools but sometimes you can come across a few problems. This video shows how to easily replace a leaking tap cartridge and then apply silicone grease to the threads to prevent them seizing up at a later date.

After contacting a local plumber we agreed a price of £170 plus VAT to fix my bathroom tap which wouldn't turn off. After waiting, long after the appointment time, he didn't turn up so I, using your video, had a go myself. Bingo! Total success! A ten minute job costing just £12 in parts and tools has just saved me exactly £192. I just can't thank you enough!!!

You absolute legend! This is the first time I’ve had to do a repair on this type of tap, and I ran into all the same problems you did. If you hadn’t had the same problems and persevered with them and showed me that the tap would eventually separate with enough WD-40 I would not have believed it and given up. The outer cover and the locking ring refused together on my tap too, so thank you for showing how to separate them - even that worked perfectly! Fantastic video thank you so much for posting and sharing your knowledge.

I never knew there were so many types of mixer tap before ours started leaking. Having discovered the exact same tap in the online store (here in France) I knew it needed a new cartridge and all that was left to do was to find out how to disassemble the damned thing in order to remove the cartridge. It was at this point that a quick Google search and your video came to the rescue. At this point, I neither have the new cartridge nor have I attempted the job, but at least (thanks to your excellent video tutorial) I now know exactly what to do and how to do it well. And to think, the missus was talking about buying a new tap!!! A MASSIVE thumbs up, your time and effort in putting this together is very much appreciated.

This is exactly what I needed. I attempted the same job a couple of months ago, but when I couldn’t remove the handle, I gave up. Yesterday I bought silicone grease for my pond pump fittings, and got inspired to take another swing at the faucet. I had use some “persuasion” on the handle (I’m 99 lbs.) but the shroud was impossible. With your help I was able to fix something that’s been bothering me for some time now. Thanks a million!

A sincere big thank you for this demo. I was weened on olde worlde taps and rubber washers, have a good understanding of those but not a clue where to start with these ceramics. I was already studying Screwfix to go the easy way, just buy a new tap. But even that wasn’t going to be easy, pipes off, basin out. This tap (much like your demo) is 8 years old, had very little use and in a softened water house, had the smallest of leaks from around the bezel. Followed your instructions, came apart easily, apart from chrome bezel had oxidised to brass nut from the leak. Everything else looked immaculate so greased up the threads and reassembled. Job done! Can only think that the cartridge wasn’t tightened down quite enough at manufacture. So thanks to you I am a little wiser and managed a quick and free fix. Cheers!

As I said in my previous comment, this video was really useful. There were a couple of tiny differences between my tap and the one in the video: under the hot/cold tap, there was no plastic insert, you just went straight to the grub screw, and the shroud was plastic and clip-on rather than metal and screw-on. Also, the first cartridge I bought was the correct diameter (35mm in my case) but not the correct height. I should have listened to my wife, and bought the recommended cartridge from the tap manufacturer.

Great video. One word of warning from my experience. If you’re NOT replacing the cartridge but perhaps you want to simply replace the handle on the tap, avoid spraying WD40 around the top of the cartridge. I did this on two taps and the WD40 (once the new one was fitted) made the handle stiff and squeaky and I had to replace two perfectly working cartridges. I know you would expect WD40 to lubricate but it seemed to have the opposite effect on moving plastic parts.

I'm a maintenance engineer by trade and so I know how a little job can quickly escalate and so I try to cover all possible scenarios. Only the other day on site I was asked to replace some wheels on a shaft, normally I would have replaced all five wheels, three bearings and the drive pulley in a couple of hours but on this occasion it took me all day and even then I only managed to replace two bearings and three wheels! Thanks for the comment ;-)

My house has them and WHB developed a leak from the collar after 11 years - not bad going. Struggled with all the problems you had although used baking soda and vinegar mix in place of WD40 (Son had nicked it!) Got the cartridge out and gave it all a good clean, popped it back in and all good (so far...) Least I'll know what to do if it starts again. Thanks for the video really good advice.

I've not done many of these, buy sometimes the sealing O rings get compressed and stick to the metal part of the tap. You could try pouring some warm water over it, that might help.

Thanks for this. Needed to watch this to give me the push to change mine.i thought it was a tap replacement job for sure. Luckily everything came off really easily for me. The chrome shroud was plastic and it came of super easy. If people don't have the strap wrench. I would recommend the watchkeepers technique for cashback removal. Wear grippy washing up gloves and open by hand.

Thanks for video. My mixer was leaking out the side rather than the out the spout. I put afew turns of PTFE plumbing tape around the O-ring of the cartridge and tightened it all back up again, to fix it. (The replacement cartridge I had didn't fit, it was 40mm diameter the same as the existing one but it was only 25mm deep whereas the old one was 43 mm deep)

Tap cartridges can be a real pain, I normally go to Sheths in Blackburn, as they specialise in cartridges. I went only last week to get a simple brass tap cartridge, I took the old one, but still they had about 12 to choose from, all different heights and all with different spline fittings. Getting the correct one can be difficult 👍

I followed your advice to remove the cap by spraying it with the loosening lubricant. but couldn't remove it still. Then I put the two thick rubber bands just below the cap and I got a good grip and removed the cap right away.

A well made video for sure. My problem was that neither my tap nor the cartridge had any distinguishing marks and consequently my local plumbing supplies shop was unable to supply a replacement cartridge. I am weighing up whether to risk ordering one from choosing the nearest match from the EBay adverts or cutting my losses and buying a whole new tap. Incidentally, those advertised come in 25mm, 35mm and 40mm sizes but nowhere can I find what measurement that is. From the drawings online it seemed it referred to length but the guy at the plumbing shop told me it appeared to be the diameter.
