How To Replace R32 Timing Chains | VW Golf Mk2 R32 Head Gasket & Chain Replacement: Pt 6

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The reconditioned head for the 3.2 VR6 engine is back!
In this episode of the Volkswagen Golf Mk2 R32 we fit a new head gasket, rebuild the newly returned head with the rockers and cams, demonstrating the correct torquing process for the head bolts. Then we show the process of R32 timing chain replacement, including guides & tensioners and show how to correctly time your R32 engine. We finish with a new rear main crank seal replacement. It was all going so well until the end...

Ah you know the one! It's very distinctive and rude not to drop it down a cog when you go through! I'll have to keep an eye out for your Mk1 GTI as my parents are local to the area so visit often. 👍

Mate, just a tip from an old long retired mechanic. Always pull a spanner, power bar, ratchet or torque wrench towards you rather than pushing. Enjoying your videos, those V6's are amazing, not quite a straight 6 and not quite a Vee.

Yes I was standing the wrong side of the engine as it turns out and certainly made life difficult for myself! You'll notice I didn't make that mistake in the videos after this one! The VR6 is a rather special engine by the way of its configuration. Very clever being so compact. From some angles it looks huge, others, very neat and compact. It's a shame they don't produce them any more. Really pleased you're enjoying the videos though. Means a lot.

Guys you should replace the intermediate sprockets when doing the chains as they wear 👍🏻

This is something that I did look at doing, but actually when we removed the sprocket and inspected it, the teeth are in very good order with very little sign of wear too. Also, when the chain tolerances were checked they were reading +1 and 0, so very good still. With the costs mounting up on the rebuild it's something that I couldn't justify spending more money on, especially as I felt it perhaps wasn't necessary, with the engine being low mileage and the chains were only being replaced due to a head gasket failure, not due to worn chains. A gamble of course, and I may live to regret it!

@@golfmk2 fair enough, I didn’t notice the wear on mine untill I compared it with the new sprockets 😂 I’m sure it will be fine as my chains were right on the limit on vcds

@@garagenorth1864 I completely understand where you have come from though so was happy to explain my reasoning for not doing so. It's that tricky situation of 'where do I stop' when I comes to something like this. The job was really a repair, rather than an overhaul, but costs have already spiralled as I've been getting stuff done that can be whilst the engine is out and accessible, but I have to draw a line with regards to replacing some parts and by inspecting this I've taken an informed decision not to replace.
