How to Replace Gas Valve Coils On Dryer

How to replace gas valve coils on gas dryer. In this video I show how to replace the gas valve coils that are in most gas dryers like Whirlpool, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Maytag, and more. The one in the video is a Maytag dryer. Even though most dryers will be very similar to what you see in the video but do know that some new dryers have an updated style of gas valve coils where the coils are fused together into one piece and there are some dryers where it is not possible to replace just the coils. You have to replace the whole gas valve. (which is totally uncool of the engineers who designed that) Here are some Amazon links to gas valve coils:

    This worked on my Maytag! I was concerned that my dryer was stacked and there was no way I could remove it by myself. But since the Maytag has the valve accessible from the front panel, I just dropped the front panel and replaced the valves in no time. Total cost including shipping was $24. Thanks!

    I didn't feel like dishing out the $2G for a new washer/dryer set, so I hired a company for $150 to diagnose my gas dryer issues. He said I needed new coils (which I regrettably figured out after I called them). He actually had already installed them, took him about 2 minutes to do so, and then said I could pay them an extra $250 to leave them on, otherwise he would take the new coils back and charge us only for the service visit. I kept my $250, of course, and watched this video instead. A $7 Amazon purchase and about 10 minutes later and my dryer is fixed.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I have a Kenmore Elite HE3 gas dryer and I recently found some minor to medium gas leak around the gas valve (using a Home-Flex detector bought at Home Depot). I'm wondering if there is anything I can fix on the valve to stop the leak, such as loosen parts, or maybe the coils? Thanks a lot.

  • @publicmail2
    @publicmail25 жыл бұрын

    You can see that the coils are differently arranged, redundancy and safety are designed in so it fails safe. See below: Two gas valves are arranged in series within a single housing so that if all solenoid coils are de-energized and one valve is not seated properly and leaking gas, the second valve will not release that gas from the assembly. The first internal valve uses two separate solenoid coils; a 'holding coil' and a 'booster coil'. Both coils must be energized to open the valve but only the holding coil needs to be energized to hold it open once there. The second internal valve uses a single coil to actuate it which is called the 'secondary coil'. Like microwave door safety switches there's usually 3 and when one fails it turns the fans on only so customer just unplugs unit.

    @@WordofAdviceTV Thank u, I like to know how things work, being a pleasure pilot and instructor I learned R.U.A.C. meaning Rote (copying someone), U (understanding how and why), A (application being able to do it), and the best is C (correlation, meaning I understand how microwave switches fail safe and I can correlate that to gas valves failing safe without knowing much about gas valves, but because you know the concept you can correlate to other things learning even more. It's sort of the last phase in learning and makes understanding things exponentially easier. That another reason I like your channel good info, Thxs.

I really do hear a distinct click (each time over several tests) before the glow from the igniter has faded away. Is it still very likely that my problem is with the gas valve coils? Unfortunately I can't say for certain without seeing it. The coils would need to be checked with a meter to know for sure. Another possibility is that the gas is turned off to the dryer. The gas valve could be bad too but those rarely fail.

    Well, after watching more videos, I found one that helped with that problem. If anyone else is having problems, look for video on grinding compound and flexible neck attachments for your drill. Worked like a charm getting those stuck screws out.

    Do I have to shut off the gas to do this? My gas drier connector has this tiny square shut off thing. It's not a lever. Do I turn that thing to the right (righty tighty?) to shut it off? Also, mine intermittently heats up. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Could that be the gas coils? Thanks!

    That is indeed one of the common symptoms of weak gas valve coils. You don't need to turn off the gas to replace the coils.

    Now I’m laughing 😂 Believe it or not, I still have a late 70s General Electric electric dryer, and it works fine. I had to replace the belt a couple times...I can’t run it on high heat because it gets so hot, I’m afraid it will ignite the clothes...

    I see the glow on my GE gas dryer, i hear the flame come on, but then as the dryer runs it sounds like the flame is flickering off then immediately coming back on - poof ... poof ... poof. However, it heats up normally and dries the clothes. Could it be the coils going bad?

    Yes, I have seen weak gas valve coils do what you described. Though I can't guarantee that it's for sure the coils that are causing that without checking them.

    @@WordofAdviceTVThanx Jay. Would you suggest just replacing the valves? Or open up and test them? I figure they won't show no resistance as they are clearly not failed yet. My 2 cost $45, but still far cheaper than a new dryer or service call. thanx again!

    I was watching this to see if I could find the answer to your question. Mine does not have that metal sleeve on the second coil. I don’t believe it should have one. But I also don’t know if my unit has been worked in before and perhaps someone lost it. I’m hoping it just doesn’t have one because I don’t see them sold without buying the entire assembly the coils mount to.

    Please show how to test the coils. If you have a bad valve, you want to rule out the possibility of just bad coil (solenoid) . that dryer valve look just like my direct vent suburban aire wall mount heater. Which has been discontinued manufacturing of. Great heater, why they stopped making I don't know, perhaps too dependable.....
