How To Replace Garage Door Springs - Torquemaster Plus, Wayne Dalton

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this step-by-step video I explain how to replace Torquemaster Plus springs on a Wayne Dalton garage door. These garage door springs are very easy to replace when they break, and while some kinds of springs can be dangerous to work on, these are not. Save a bunch of money and replace broken springs yourself! The Torque Master Plus style of spring is in expensive, and only requires basic tools to replace. Don't risk ruining your garage door opener or your safety by ignoring broken springs.

I was taking my kids to the pool and ran back in the house to get towels. In the garage I heard a metal crash but very abrupt. This video is perfect! It’s only the left(red) spring but will do both. Thank you sir! And your son ! Very informative and even sharing the mistake was awesome.

Excellent step-by-step tutorial. I've always installed the old style (tension spring on each side), but I'm about to buy a new Wayne Dalton door that uses these springs. Just like you, I'm intimidated cause I've never installed these, but after watching your video, I feel comfortable enough to take my time and do it. Thank you for taking the time to show the details and point out the areas of concern for safety. Great job on the video and your spring replacement!

Thank you! I had the first version, but this was still super helpful and motivating. The only issue I ran into was getting the sleeves out. Mine were practically glued in place, but I wound them up using needle nose pliers to twist and slowly yank them out. Afterwards, i trimmed off the damaged twisted parts but I could barely get my sleeves to go back in, but everything I read said they weren’t essential except for sound damping, so I trimmed them short when i couldn’t get them to go any further. Beyond that hiccup, it was pretty straightforward.

OMG! I’ve been working on this for almost 2 weeks now and I got it fixed today!! I cannot believe it! All I had to do was replace a cable. Boy did I learn there’s no such thing as replacing just a cable. Many trips to Menards for better tools and the right size cables and a drill (because I can’t find mine) and having to redo a few things because, well just because, but I can open the door now!! Thanks for the great tutorial.

Great video with detailed instructions! I just did this repair and used this video as reference. A couple things I did different. I just bent the tab on the center support to allow the bar to be removed without removing the bracket. Once I had the bar back in the brackets with the new springs, I took out the slack in the lift cables by loosening the set screw on the cable drum. Finally, instead of marking of screw to count the turns, I marked the actual socket, it was a lot easier to see. On a side note, I understand the ads in the video and the purpose....the placement became very frustrating when I wanted to "rewind" to watch again. But again I understand the purpose. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you were able to get your install done correctly, and am glad to hear about what you did differently. As for the ads - KZread auto-chooses where to place the ads, but I believe I have the ability to change their exact placement. I'll take a look at that and see if there are better places in the video that make more sense for ad breaks. Thanks!

@AmplifyDIY Oh. I got my spring from DDM Garage Door. Their website takes the Wayne Dalton number directly for a perfect match. Also, I used the estimated turns as a guide. I kept tensioning the spring and checked the door after a few turns. I kept going until the door opened as it should. As long as I was in the ball park of the estimate, I knew I was OK. This way I never had to take turns out.

I was quoted almost $1,000 for a pro company to replace the entire system with the old spring type. I prefer to stay with the Wayne Dalton system that the builder had put on my home. Most of my neighbors are changing to old spring type because apparently pro company's do not make any profit on Wayne Dalton spring system replacement. I personally like the fact that the springs under tension are inside the rod and don't make a loud bang if they snap.

Thank you for the no nonsense and to the point video! By far the best I have viewed for replacing Torquemaster springs. Just one note, you have the Torquemaster Plus vs the Original Torquemaster One which has the dial indicator on the end to show the number of turns you have on the spring.

Thank you for posting this. I just changed my springs in my torque master plus garage door. The right side was broken. I did the lift test and the door was too heavy when I disconnected it. The right side spun both ways. Releasing the tension on the one good spring was the scary part for me. But once it was tension free, the rest was easy. Just take your time. This video saved me about 250 bucks. I paid 94 bucks for a set of springs on Ebay.

My Wayne-Dalton 16' x 8' Torquemaster Plus Left hand spring broke Mid-May 2020. Luckily my door would still open & close but it became apparent something was wrong. House is 7 years old. I found your video the best coordinated & concise repair process I've ever encountered here on KZread. You clearly & step-by-step covered the entire repair sequence. I found your list of sources and reference manuals to be absolutely accurate. I ordered replacement springs from your source & received the correct springs four business days later. Installation went well & my door is 100% functional once again. My thanks to your professional presentation. This is the 1st KZread video I've ever posted a comment on. Terrific Job!

I just bought and installed 2 Wayne Dalton 9100 doors. Similar to these, but only 9 feet wide. The printed instructions mentioned an 'idler bracket' that did NOT come with either door. Thanks to your video, I realized that they cam with dual springs, which dont require/use an idler bracket and I was able to finish the job and tension both sides. HUGE thank you for this, very well done.

OK, everything went into place just like you demonstrated and said. Did the open door, like 1/4 the way and it stayed. 1/2 and it stayed and then 3/4 and stayed. (yes, I stopped at 3/4) I was ready for the celebratory beer. Connected the pull bar and the garage door was working!!!! Until it did not go all the way up. It stopped like 3/4 the way up. Any suggestions on what was missed? @@AmplifyDIY

@@richs2860 Hmm... that's pretty odd. First, I'd close the door and disconnect the trolley. See if you can open it all the way by hand, checking the track for obstructions. If it opens and closes by hand properly, then I'd reconnect it and check the owners manual for your opener to see if you can re-set the open and close limits. The opener may just be confused.
