How to Replace Fuel Filter in a Modern Diesel Car (Ford 1.6 tdci)

A quick how to on how to replace the fuel filter in a Ford Focus 1.6 tdci.
Priming the fuel filter with diesel is key to a successful replacement.
Diesel engines are very sensitive to air in the system!
A lot of diesel cars do not have a feed pump in the tank, so the high pressure pump actually sucks fuel from the filter. If air pockets are present the HP pump might not be able to create a sufficient vacuum enough to start the engine.

This is a great guide. I've watched a few that prime it in different ways. Sucking it through from the tank seems the easiest and obvious to me and worked perfectly. I used a Draper bulb pump that did the trick (although it had the wrong connectors - I had to remove a connector and attach it straight to the pipe).

Primed it up as you said, started first time,a slight tapping from no1 injector, left it running for 5 mins the tapping stopped after it had cleared out the air, like you say you have to completely prime the filter,i did it with a hand pump and i drew about a litre through the filter untill i could see no bubbles.Good video Mate.

On my way to the fuel filter I found a vacum hose that was loose. That solved my acceleration and engine dying.

Can the black plastic part ontop of these filters be removed so there's access to the inside of the filter ? Only reason i'm asking this is because i need to run a "Diesel Cleaner" through my fuel tank so it starts to clear all the dirty diesel gunge that's built up inside my fuel tank over time. It'll save me a few pounds if the inside of the filter can be accessed to be cleaned out so i don't need to buy say 2x brand new fuel filters. Got a feeling that the filter is a "Sealed" unit though :(

Hi there. This is a great video but out of curiosity, what did you use to bleed the fuel into the filter. Was it a specific tool or was it something you made yourself?

Thank you for your comment. 😊 I actually tried to prime it here as well, but it didn't seem to do anything.. So the use of a suction pump was necessary.

Yes, you really have to bleed the system thoroughly, especially if you're doing it by hand. The filter needs to be completely primed with fuel and bled from air. So the boring answer is to bleed more, sorry. :/

Uppdatering.
