    Its all fun & games until those pumps let loose. That happened a few years back. 2 guys working on a truck with the bed lifted, pumps let go, bed slammed down. 2 guys died instantly. Lift the truck, use jack stands and live to see tomorrow.

    I replaced the shocks on my ram 2500 earlier this year. 2 of them weren't attached anymore, one was rusted open so it was doing absolutely nothing, and the last one was so seized on that a 2 meter pole for leverage did nothing. I had to get it off with an angle grinder. I almost lit myself on fire when I ground the knuckle off because I forgot oil was flammable but now I can drive on bumpy roads without tasting the ceiling so I think overall it was a win.

    Wow! Have you ever thought about replacing the upper shock mount with the next generation mount from after about 1980? I did it on my 1-ton dually 4x4 79 ranger. Gave me a lot more shock options and got rid of that vertical breakaway bolt. I must admit it's easier to change shock when that vertical bolt breaks and the shock is just laying forward. I've hauled five point two tons limestone Rock on the back of that truck and dumped it. I've got diamond plate flatbed. That'd be another suggestion. Only suggestions. You can always make it where the whole front end tilts forward and you can do it freehand or with hydraulics. That way both ends open up. Just an idea.

  • @the1reaper
    @the1reaper Жыл бұрын

    I just can't believe you just used an impact to tighten the shock on. Always torque it down. Never impact it down. It's now tighter than manufacturer recommendations and either will fatigue the metal frame or screw causing you to have to cut it out when needing to be replaced or break completely off.

    The old shock and the new shock are designed completely different. But the shock doesn't hold the truck up, it dampens the springs operation. A gas shock stays cool, doesn't aerate, and has a really bright paint job. The question really is, do you notice any improvement when driving ? Most people can't. They just look cool under there. I would upgrade old shocks like those too, but what do I get for my money? If I wanted a stiffer ride, I would choose shocks with more pressure. A stiffer ride is not necessarily what people are looking for.

    I've got dump bed on my 79 ranger. Back when a ranger was a full size truck. And top of the line. Now that I got off my chest. My point is on this 1ton four-wheel drive real dually it has a nice flatbed. Custom-made. Honestly homemade. But well made. I can remember the truck being brand new a 1976 that the neighbor down the lane had. He put hydraulics under it made dump bad out of it. Well you either don't use it like a dump truck because you will tear the bed up. Or you go ahead and tear the bed up. On that diamond plate still with real oak boards for the side that turn out beautiful every time I power wash and stain them at deck stain. I'll just get a load of 1-in clean limestone. Drive it down the road out to the farm dump it. Go wash the bed down and spray it black again. I'll even use some self-hatching primer if I need it. Then go get best and show at the local car show. All that Chrome on the engine and Edelbrock parts, and the rest of the body treatment on the truck makes it a show winner. In the past it's won some pretty impressive shows but I'm not showed it in the last decade. I share that for your consideration for when you put it down and scissor lift under whatever bed you choose.. if it's a Ford before about 1980, cut off the old shock mounts on top and replace them with the next generation top shock mount. It's horizontal and not vertical bolt! And you have a whole lot more options on shocks. Plus your bolts don't break off like to do on those vertical bolts. Just a couple lessons learned and handed to me from the older guys a couple of three decades ago. I guess now it's my turn to be the older guy. Darn it. Whatever you do just enjoy your truck

    I was thinking. The same shit, I literally replace these things all day long so I noticed that😂 you can actually use the band as a advantage too, stick your top bolt/nut on and winch it down, aim the bottom end towards where it’s gonna go, get ready with your bolt so then you cut the cable and it slowly extends into place and right when the holes like up you just send that bolt in and bam, shocks in 20 minutes

    Better than that I built a flatbed on my 2009 with hinges on the front of the front sheet of plywood, and hinges on the rear of the rear sheet of plywood. So to replace the fuel pump, shocks or service other parts of the rear of the truck all that needs to be done is pull up the stake sides, remove two nuts and washers and open up both sheets.
