I'm glad that project is finished. Now you can start fixing the skirting on that single wide trailer.
Its all fun & games until those pumps let loose. That happened a few years back. 2 guys working on a truck with the bed lifted, pumps let go, bed slammed down. 2 guys died instantly. Lift the truck, use jack stands and live to see tomorrow.

Step 1 do it like I have done every truck rear shock I have ever owned. On the ground with a lot of room and ease of fitment.
Invests thousands into a dump bed. Neglects old worn out shocks which cost $50 to replace. Seems legit.

If you look at the lift its as old as the original shocks. Most likely installed when the truck was new.
Installs it with the plastic that keeps it from opening all the way lol will probably break but cracked me up to see it on there 😂
I replaced the shocks on my ram 2500 earlier this year. 2 of them weren't attached anymore, one was rusted open so it was doing absolutely nothing, and the last one was so seized on that a 2 meter pole for leverage did nothing. I had to get it off with an angle grinder. I almost lit myself on fire when I ground the knuckle off because I forgot oil was flammable but now I can drive on bumpy roads without tasting the ceiling so I think overall it was a win.
Safety block on bed lift??? A must!!! You should always mention it.
Also easy to replace the fuel pump!
I need a tilt bed on my truck that's amazing why have I never thought of it
Wow! Have you ever thought about replacing the upper shock mount with the next generation mount from after about 1980? I did it on my 1-ton dually 4x4 79 ranger. Gave me a lot more shock options and got rid of that vertical breakaway bolt. I must admit it's easier to change shock when that vertical bolt breaks and the shock is just laying forward. I've hauled five point two tons limestone Rock on the back of that truck and dumped it. I've got diamond plate flatbed. That'd be another suggestion. Only suggestions. You can always make it where the whole front end tilts forward and you can do it freehand or with hydraulics. That way both ends open up. Just an idea.
I love how they showed where to find that red nob.
I need a dump bed now
Fuel pump done ✅ Evap system diagnostic work done ✅
Just a word of advice use a 4x4 or 6x6 to safety prop that bed up in case a PTO goes out. That bed comes slamming down you won't even have time to react.
How to replace them without a lift? Then proceeds to lift the bed of the truck?

Trying to compress a new bottomed out shock, and then leaving the shipping strap on the shock. They had to cut one into extend it want to just cut the whole thing off. It's all a little details.
I just can't believe you just used an impact to tighten the shock on. Always torque it down. Never impact it down. It's now tighter than manufacturer recommendations and either will fatigue the metal frame or screw causing you to have to cut it out when needing to be replaced or break completely off.
But did they use some sort of mechanical block to keep the bed from falling in the event of a hydraulic failure? Shake hands with danger.
I suddenly need a tilt bed on my 79 F-150 Ranger
The yellow shock was already bottomed out when you tried to push it just a laugh thank you
The old shock and the new shock are designed completely different. But the shock doesn't hold the truck up, it dampens the springs operation. A gas shock stays cool, doesn't aerate, and has a really bright paint job. The question really is, do you notice any improvement when driving ? Most people can't. They just look cool under there. I would upgrade old shocks like those too, but what do I get for my money? If I wanted a stiffer ride, I would choose shocks with more pressure. A stiffer ride is not necessarily what people are looking for.
I plan on installing a dump bed on my truck.

I've got dump bed on my 79 ranger. Back when a ranger was a full size truck. And top of the line. Now that I got off my chest. My point is on this 1ton four-wheel drive real dually it has a nice flatbed. Custom-made. Honestly homemade. But well made. I can remember the truck being brand new a 1976 that the neighbor down the lane had. He put hydraulics under it made dump bad out of it. Well you either don't use it like a dump truck because you will tear the bed up. Or you go ahead and tear the bed up. On that diamond plate still with real oak boards for the side that turn out beautiful every time I power wash and stain them at deck stain. I'll just get a load of 1-in clean limestone. Drive it down the road out to the farm dump it. Go wash the bed down and spray it black again. I'll even use some self-hatching primer if I need it. Then go get best and show at the local car show. All that Chrome on the engine and Edelbrock parts, and the rest of the body treatment on the truck makes it a show winner. In the past it's won some pretty impressive shows but I'm not showed it in the last decade. I share that for your consideration for when you put it down and scissor lift under whatever bed you choose.. if it's a Ford before about 1980, cut off the old shock mounts on top and replace them with the next generation top shock mount. It's horizontal and not vertical bolt! And you have a whole lot more options on shocks. Plus your bolts don't break off like to do on those vertical bolts. Just a couple lessons learned and handed to me from the older guys a couple of three decades ago. I guess now it's my turn to be the older guy. Darn it. Whatever you do just enjoy your truck
Can't beat deep creep
I do mine without a lift or a lifting bed lol
I wish they made dump beds on trucks a standard feature
By now. This should be a standard in trucks
He did take the band's off, right? That last picture looks like it's still on there....🤔
@georgehoward406
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking. The same shit, I literally replace these things all day long so I noticed that😂 you can actually use the band as a advantage too, stick your top bolt/nut on and winch it down, aim the bottom end towards where it’s gonna go, get ready with your bolt so then you cut the cable and it slowly extends into place and right when the holes like up you just send that bolt in and bam, shocks in 20 minutes

Only came to the comments to see if someone noticed the bands 😆
I wanted the edit version where he struggles hard to remove rusted bolts. You basically need to brake your back struts in order to remove them in a big wiggle motions for a while. I did...
I have one of those kind of trucks. But it's a Chevrolet Apache 20 1961
Better than that I built a flatbed on my 2009 with hinges on the front of the front sheet of plywood, and hinges on the rear of the rear sheet of plywood. So to replace the fuel pump, shocks or service other parts of the rear of the truck all that needs to be done is pull up the stake sides, remove two nuts and washers and open up both sheets.
Original ones were hydraulic oil shocks and won't have any pressure, they just dampen. The new ones are gas charged and are pressurized. Also I hope you put a deadman post underneath that hydraulic bed while you were working 🤔
Awesome
Easy job indeed
Never mind the shocks , the fuel pump is a breeze.
Not putting a safety prop between the bed &the frame i knew a man that got killed working like your doing
