How To Replace Cartridge Hub Bearings In Your Road Bike Wheels

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The majority of high-end wheels these days use cartridge bearings, replacing them correctly is important to ensure your bearings last, and you wheels run as efficiently as possible. Jon runs you through replacing cartridge bearings on a set of DT Swiss wheels.

Before you get started, make sure you've got all the tools you will need for your hub. A bench vice is also very useful for replacing your hub bearings, but isn't necessarily essential if you don't have one in your home workshop.
Another really important thing to remember is to lay out all the parts of your hub in the order that you removed them. That way you'll know which order to put them back in when you get to that point. It can also help to take a picture of the hub at each point when you remove each part.
Let us know how you get on, and if you have any problems don't forget to leave a question for Jon.

To all the folks saying how hard this looks- It's much easier than it looks! I remember the first time I did this about five years ago and had the same level of intimidation. It's truly a straightforward process. And after you've done it, the fear goes away completely.

Wonderful to see an in depth video like this.. I take my hat of to the patience that you have doing this. I just wonder at how much it cost to service this freehub compared to replacing it! Those tools can't have been cheap at all, makes you wonder since it may well last another 20 years if it isn't worth taking it to a high end bike shop to get it done there. Brilliant video none the less and very interesting! Would love to see one with a cup and cone bearing... bring on the greese!

Hi, it was the hub bearings being replaced, as opposed to freehub. To replace the hub would cost a fair bit. As then the wheel would need to be rebuilt. New spokes, labour etc.

  • @michaelsutton2000

The specialised tools are there mainly to make sure the bearings are kept square to the hub. There are other ways to do this if it is a one-off job, but avoiding damage to the hub body is essential as this is the part you do not want to replace. Others suggested using an old bearing and an old hub or piece of threaded rod. I think I used a very long coach bolt the last time I did this. What I didn't do last time was to take photos of each piece as it was removed. Boy, did that take me ages to figure out

Jon, nice job. I like the Hügi hubs. I own a set of DT Swiss 340 hubs and they are awesome even though they have seen a lot of use in their life. Just out of curiosity, there is another bearing in the freehub, was there a reason not to change that also? I mean, that one is pretty easy to get to, so no harm in leaving it for later... Just wondering ;)

  • @rodrigomaero
    @rodrigomaero6 жыл бұрын

I fail to see how this can be easier than servicing a loose ball bearing hub. You need so many special tools... Also I see the drive side bearing sits inside the of the hub shell, far away from the mounting end giving it a lot of torque which potentially can bend the axle. Definetely prefer a Shimano lose bearing system

You don't need many special tools. You can use a block of wood instead of the protector and a steel QR or threaded rod to press back in, using any available nut or even the old bearings as the "drift". Is a threaded rod a special tool? Anyway, who cares. It's a half hour job every few years give or take either way. With C&C it's once a year, still not a big deal.

Loose bearings Procedure : freewheel or cassette remover tool, remove components, swap out loose bearings by removing from drive side shaft nut, have a beer while you see how tight the cups have to be before installing wheel nuts. It takes me really 5 minutes to redo a front wheel rebearing. Usually 10 minutes on the back wheel for freewheel sets due to measuring the distance on the drive side and setting the play.

#askgcntech I race in u17 road races and there are limits in Poland for gear size which is 46 x 14. People who are checking this ask us to put our gear to hardest and they are checking how much the crank arm will turn in the given distance. I want to buy an oval chain ring and I don't know if I can because I don't know if the oval will change the distance the crank arm turns. And if it will which chain ring (with how many teeth) will give the same effect like 46t round chain ring gives? (I want to buy absoluteBLACK chain ring)

DT swiss web, or this www.worldwidecyclery.com/products/dt-swiss-hub-tool-kit-for-6803-bearings-includes-2-drifts-and-1-axle-protector But be aware, that it may not fit other hubs with these bearings

Why not use the Parktool HBP-1 hub bearing press set to press in the bearings instead of a mallet and a vice??

you can get those DT hub special tools on ebay for a lot cheaper then the Parktool bearing press...but then again the Parktool press can handle any number of different hubs....all it takes is a few more $$

yea well no mention of making sure not to strip any axle Thread which is what I did on my old phil woods freewheel rear hub...so unless I figure how to repair those threads I am keeping an eye on ebay for a cheap rear freewheel to swap out a rear axle for....Yes I hammered my axle without an axle protector pushing causing misalignment of the threads on the axle

ME too. This is some type of cycling conspiracy I think to keep the cash rolling in. I have Fulcrum wheels and they cost more in bearing fixes than they did to buy.
