Using metal tool against aluminum. Wouldn't this leave scratch marks? Why not use some sort of block that will not scratch. The thing I notice with a lot of workmen is that they are rough. Had a guy deliver a new washing machine and proceed to put his tools right on top of it with no towel for protection. He was told very quickly. At least he put a rag down.

The grids are in between tow panes of glass and they are vacuum sealed together, so you won’t be able to remove the grids this way unfortunately

If by bars you mean decorative grids ( squares between 2 panes of glass) you would need to order glass with those in it, so it matches glass next to it.

Two questions: Can you replace a picture window this same way? Can you remove and replace a small window this way from the inside of the house of a second story room?

Most likely not! Most of the picture windows have glass stops that snap in from the outside!

Love the video - I looked at this after I had inspected the windows in this old condo, and I figured that both the removable window and the fixed-frame window could be removed as you so clearly showed. I have a question though: where does a person find a replacement double pane window? It looks like my windows are a standard size: 47" wide, made up of approximately 23.5" wide removable pane and 23.5" fixed pane. It is Labor Day weekend here in the US, so no chance of a quick reply before Tuesday, but I was wondering if these aluminum window panes are easy to come by. Condo was built in the mid 1980s. Again, many thanks for the quality video, with clear instructions and the right amount of detail.

So unfortunately there is no standard size for dual pane glass in windows, ( except most aluminum sliding glass doors). You can order glass from your local glass shop/glass supplier, just provide them with size, width by height and overall thickness ( most aluminum windows in US are 1/2 overall thickness), but double check it to make sure. Also pay attention to spacer color ( in between the glass) most common is aluminum but some have black/bronze , it doesn’t effect anything but you want the new glass and spacer to match. And fiy it usually takes at least 2-3 days sometimes longer to get the glass from time you order it. Hope this helps!

@@roadglassandmore9064 I'm in Madison, WI - it's Labor Day weekend - and I'm not local to the area, but I plan to do as you recommend when the glass shops / suppliers are open again on Tuesday. I'll have the details of the pane dimensions then. We did contact one store yesterday and they mentioned a 4 to 6 week wait for an IGU replacement, which is what prompted my question to you! Also, my wife spoke with someone on the front desk at the store, and the person there said that they break the glass to get it out which made me scratch my head a little... Thanks for the spacer heads-up, and I'll report back here when I get some traction on a solution. Many thanks for your prompt and detailed reply!

Rubber gusset is the term we use at work.. but if you are trying to find it online , I’d suggest “ insulated glass gasket / or glazing”

Hi there i live in San Diego California. Me and my dad want to get into the window business. Repairing sliding doors and windows. Because theres good money doing that. But how do we go about learning? Is there somekind of classes to learn all this. Please point me in the right direction. How did you aquire all your skills. By the way we love watching all your videos

I will have more videos coming, different how to tutorials, just a little busy right now with other things. But i don’t think school or classes exists for this trade! I have learned everything by working in this trade! If you have any questions or videos you’d like to see let me know and I will try to help! I’m from Sacramento. If you want to start thus type of business in California you will need at least a business license ( about $135 a year) but it will only let you do small jobs under $600, for bigger jobs you will have to get contractors license! And you will need a pick up truck or a van with either glass rack or you can make a simple a frame from wood to be able transport the glass. And some hand tools drill, impact driver , putty knife , hammer, rubber mallet, screw drivers. Specialty tools : suction cup , glass cutter, glass pliers, caliper ( to measure glass thinkness) So as you can see the initial cost for this business is not too much. I would looks for a glass supplier in your area and set up an account with them to buy/order glass directly! New windows and doors you can just order from Home Depot until you can get shop/ store set up.

Nice job man! You remind me of Kenny Chesney. You ever get that? I grew up in Sac. My parents still live there. I moved over to the Coast. Heat was getting to me. Sold my lath n plaster equipment and started a window cleaning business. As you know, when dealing with any window, it can be a real pane. Thanks for being careful in not scratching the glass and then cleaning up the glass after install.

Good explanation of step by step. Is the new double pane glass "sandwich" made custom at your company, or is that something you just order in standard sizes. I would imagine there would be many different tints, reflective %, tempering, to choose from. I'm just a homeowner fascinated by what you can do and I do have about a dozen upcoming in my 33 year old house where the seal has broken and they are fogged. All my neighbors are just buying vinyl windows, but they seem slightly smaller than the original, and reglazing appeals to me, keeping the original frame since it's in good condition. Maybe that's an error in my judgement?

We usually order glass from local glass supplier. There are no standard sizes unfortunately, except some sliding glass doors ( 34 x76, 46x76 and 28 x76 ) And if you are going to replace glass your self, I’d recommend upgrading it going back with low - e glass, it will help some with keeping house cooler in summer. Also don’t forget about safety code , any window with in 24” from the door or anything with 18” from the floor needs to be tempered glass, and glass in the door of course.
