Same. My car needs new front rotors. I’m happy to let my mechanic do it but I’m trying to learn more about cars so I’m looking it up for myself
hey Mr. Kilmer i wanted to say please never stop helping us mechanically inclined folks. youre the man.
Just an small note... most rotors that I've bought come covered in some kind of oil/grease to keep them from rusting. VERY important that it gets cleaned off with brake cleaner before putting the calipers/new pads on! ;)

Was very surprised this wasn't mentioned in this video, as well as that some rotors are held on by a screw vs just pressure

@DaBossk depends on the car make and model, and how much the rotors cost at different places.
I'm changing my rotors on Monday. Thanks for all of your awesome videos!
@spelunkerd OK,this car had warped rotors, and the pads weren't that old. So the calliper wasn't sticking out much. IF the pads are worn thin, then you want to open the bleeder valve when squeezing the callipers back in to prevent back pressure damaging the master cylinder. If you clamped the line, the callipers could not go back in, because there's be nowhere for that fluid to go. Scotty
@mobes329 I've responded to this question already. Some rotors come with oil or creosote coating them, the ones I used were just bare steel. Yes, if they have a coating, clean it off with brake spray. Scotty
@CaptainSaul18 regular are fine, those are for racing, wear out faster, warp, and make noise too.
Dude, you are the heat! Your vids are funny, direct, and informative. Thanks and keep it up!
yes, but you can change them one pair at a time. The ridge only makes noise if you put new pads on, it really doesn't make them work bad. Most people hate the noise though

My rear rotors look like a vinyl record, is that normal ?
Scott, you are a very uplifting person. I wish I had you as a friend when I needed car assistance. I have a 2005 Kia Sedona, but Haynes never came out with with their manual to assist me. I had to pay money to get the spark plugs changed. I think you know how crazy that is. Hugo Amezaga
could be more than one problem, warped rotors do it, but shaking when not braking isn't rotors. So have the front end checked and if something like ball joints are bad, that could fix both problems
most brands work perfectly fine, just buy the second lowest priced ones at a store cause the lowest ones are always chinese made

Love how you do your videos Scottie. You Rock!
i drive the same car as in the video. you helped me fix mine, and now it runs great THANKS SCOTTY!
@kenmanuknow I've responded to this already a few times. The rotors I got were sealed in a package with no oil on them, they were just bare steel. So they needed no cleaning. If yours are covered in oil in the box, of course clean it off with brake spray cleaner. Scotty Kilmer
@facio559 No, it means you don't drive much. Bare steel rotors rust when sitting unused for long periods, that's normal.
@Frogman172 sometimes the rotors are different on abs cars, call a parts store and they can tell you by looking it up.
@Lv1nightmare I've been doing this so long, I can get them just right by hand. I only use a torque wrench on weird stuff like head gasket bolts. Scotty
@fusionstar916 Yes, if they have grease on em, these came bare steel with nothing in em.
I love the way ur videos get started
I love this guy's outtro LOL
check the front end for wear FIRST, could be a suspension problem mainly
@VoisinProductions Air can only get in through leaks. So check for leaks first, like at the wheels or at the master cylinder. Scotty
Love your vids! Keep em coming.
@kilagon10 change them too, I don't resurface them, change them. They warp more later when resurfacing them. Scotty
they stop faster, but they make more noise and wear out MUCH faster and also warp faster.
That mini at the end is my car from Houston Texas 😂😂😂 love this guy he is so knowledgeable about his repairs and car stuff better than dealers 😂😂
perfect timing my van has the shakes and was about to replace the rotors, great video, and thanks for the help Scotty
Mate ..... You are a legend. You need you're own show
@elantra11 No data system gives those sizes out. BUT, since yours is all rusted, go ahead and cut a small piece off and match it up at any auto parts store. They can sell you line, and brass couplers to connect them. Scotty Kilmer
@DrkKnte good idea to drive conservatively the first week or so. Scotty
perfect timing i have the shakes on my van and was about to replace the rotors, great job, and thanks Scotty
once warped, resurfaced rotors will quickly warp again, best to replace them
@FromThe3PointLine you can try, but often they warp when turned on a lathe, and they can only be turned once. Scotty
You the man Scotty. Thanks for another great video.
Hotdamn it that was FAST. No seriously, that really was fast. Thanks for the video. 👍👍
yes, but make sure the calliper isn't sticking on causing the rotor to warp in the first place
I had about six different "expert" village brake videos on my favorites. I never got around to watching them more than a few seconds. As soon as I saw Scotty doing a brake video those got removed from my favorites and Scotty's went up in their place. :o)
@ihartmacz As I said in a previous post, yes, if they are covered in grease to prevent rust, clean the rotors off with brake spray. But the ones I bought for this buick had no coating on them, they were just bare steel with a little rust on them. Heck, they rust as soon as it rains anyway. Scotty Kilmer

True...if you want to admire how good your new rotors and pads look, it best to do it right after you are finished with the job because the next morning they will already start turning orange
often air in the system, or the callipers are bad and also need changing
@bg147 yes, bleed all the air out first and pray the master was not damaged doing the work. Normally just air though
@JPSaxMan it costs more for the hub assembly, and you have to grease the bearings and put new seals on too.Scotty
@adriansrealm yep, cause it didn't have any on it. Of course use brake cleaner if it does have oli on it.
@LOLATYOU1 yes, change both rotors and pads
nope, the rotors I used were not oiled, and if you watch my newer video "doing a full front brake job using eBay" you'll see those aren't either and it says on the box "bolt right on, no need to do anything." Quality ones come that way these days, only old technology coats em with oil.
@Chris07860 Yes, that's the classic sign or warped rotors. Scotty Kilmer
U rock Scotty, Thanks for letting me learn something new and to save some money.
Thanks,Scott. Your vids have saved me a ton of money on auto repairs. Plus, my girl thinks I know about cars nows.
depends, some are coated and need to clean off the oil, some aren't. if it stops fine now, it hurt nothing
i agree with ya on that. i've never had any of the rotors on my vehicles turned, but if you're broke and it's cheaper, it'll get ya by for the time being. my jeep rotors were about 28 a piece so i got new ones on it. you seem like a great common sense mechanic.
lmao i loved how you came out of the trunk at the end xD
@jahanzebakhter1 yes, the hub could be bad, or more often the wheel bearings are bad causing that wobbling. Scotty
Hey Scotty, do you have any experience with drilled and slotted rotor? Do you recommend them or do you prefer blank rotors? Thanks
I would assume cheap rotors on that old thing, or the hubs are rusted, remove the rotors and sand down any bumps
see my video "replacing brake pads on your car" to see how to squeeze the callipers back in. Braking and pulling can be one side of the brakes sticking, OR a front end problem like worn ball joints or tie rods. Takes a pro to figure out which
@easyworship mine were not coated, they were bare steel. Of course clean off oiled rotors. Scotty
@Chris07860 NEVER have warped rotors turned to make them flat again. They warped in the first place, and when you cut them to make them flat again, they are now thinner and will warp again VERY quickly. Only do that if you're selling the car very soon. Scotty Kilmer
if you put good new pads and rotors on, then the callipers would be sticking on and causing them to overheat and warp quickly. Bad callipers, stuck hoses feeding them, or bad master cylinders are most common causes
very helpful video Scott!
there are tons of em out there, but if you stick to the factory oem brand you can't go wrong
Gracias amigo, thanks for your videos, very helpful
im 15 and learning how to fix cars ect and your video's help me outside of college thank you
scotty know his stuff, never guided me wrong
if it only does it with AC on, either the compressor is wearing out or the idle up valve is broken
hey scotty im glad your doing google plus on sat. if rotors are raised on the edge all the way around does mean time to change and if i change the front to i have to change the back
Thank you Scotty that's why you're the Man.!!
front end or cv axle or transmission problem then
Thanks for sharing!
yes
Scotty, what do you consider a great pair of rotors for a car? (Brand)
@arthurnigga depends on how much they charge per hour. Most would charge an hour and a half labor. Scotty
Hey scotty, i just changed my rear brake pads on my 96 accord a couple of weeks ago but now im hearing this like slight popping noise when i press on the brakes with normal force. Any idea what that could be?
Love your channel. Thank you.
@coolguy23448 some are made cheaply, some just wear out over age from brake pad friction eating material off, and some are used REALLY hard and warp from braking heat (real maniac driving though, or driving through a LOT of water which will warp hot rotors.) Scotty Kilmer

@bangkcivic Depends upon the job and the car. I use all Data labor rates from my All Data information system. Scotty
@williamsfleal Shaking is caused by either out of round tires, bent rims, out of ballance tires, a bad front end aligment, OR a worn front suspension part. I would take it to a better mechanic if someone has already aligned the front end, because any good front end man will find the problem. Scotty Kilmer
Hey Scotty I'm a new driver planning on changing my front and rear rotors was wondering on which brand is best when replacing them thanks!
@13FravelJ try it out, if it doesn't shake, great. If it does, change the pads out. Scotty
Absolute legend!
Scotty you're the man 😂 thanks so much idk where I would be with out you 🙏 God bless you bro
@starhooper84 Yes, VWs make noise if you don't use their insanely high priced dealer pads and rotors when changing the brakes. It means nothing though as long as they stop fine. Scotty
@trunitemare There are tons of brands out there, and many boxes don't even have names on them. as the man below says, EBCs are pretty good rotors, as are Brembos. Scotty Kilmer
@yousuktube that's often the rear brake rotors or drums (if you have drums, that's definitely it.) Scotty
Hello Scotty, Have a question: How could you tell the right or left side rotor not good?I understand the shake may cause by uneven surface of rotor.
Thanks Scotty once again.
Hey Scotty, I replaced my rotors and pads about three months ago. The rotors were Duralast from Auto-zone, but they warped within three months. I changed those rotors last week and with another brand new set (Duralast from Auto-zone) and they feel cheap even though their price is not. What brand of rotors do you recommend? And where can I buy them?
You saved me so much money on your videos.
I like your videos very much as well as my friends on facebook. I just had this done last week new from brakes, and rotors. Don't you have to spray the rotors first with a degreaser or whatever they use on them? Also does the piston in the brakes need to be pushed back in, as it relates to the pressure from the master cylinder?
@studpuppy69 You can if you want to get rid of old fluid, but if the system is not opened and the brakes are hard to begin with, it's not needed. Scotty Kilmer
@crulockdown Yes, replace them. Scotty
I had a feeling these were easy to do but I gotta watch u do it first just to make sure I know the right steps😎👍
of course bleed them out first, but if they are still tight, either the callipers are sticking or you got crappy pads that are too big
I keep getting bad mechanics. I moved to a new state and can't find a trustworthy one. It's cost me thousands of dollars allready So today I bought all my own tools. And I'm just going to fix my own stuff. Your videos are a godsend thank you so much with your content. I bought parts today and recall having a mechanic do this on my car before I'm doing rotors and brakes and master cylinder my sweethearts car and I crap you not the parts and tools I needed only cost me a third of what it would cost me to go to a mechanic and this stuff seems super simple not hard at all.
