I replaced all 4 rotors on my 2012 Focus, I put middle of the price range rotors on the back and polymer coated rotors on the front, and now 18 months and one salty Canadian winter later the front rotors still look like new and the back rotors are covered in rust! The extra few dollars for poly coat to me is worth it. Just a tip for the rust belt readers.

RedWhiteAndBlueVideo . I’m assuming after 52 years of being a mechanic that he is a very careful guy. Myself, however, I use jack stands and even take the wheel I took off and slide it under the frame as an extra layer of protection that is really not needed. Better safe than potentially getting crushed.

Duane Mullin Yes I do the same with the tires and I also leave the jack supporting the car with stands. I had a friend who put his legs under a car like scotty. We were on gravel. I told him to get his legs from under the car and right after he took his legs out the jack slid on the gravel the car fell and his legs would have been crushed had he not moved them.

It's a good idea to clean and lube up the pins on which the brake caliper slides (only use special lubricant, the one that your car requires: usually it's silicone brake lubricant). This will ensure good and even wear between the interior and exterior pad.

I am not a mechanic just a hobbyist and hardcore DIYer. The only thing I would say is please be careful. You had the car raised with only the jack I did not see any jack stands. You had your leg under the car wiggling and pushing that could be dangerous. The car could have fallen and we love your videos please don't get hurt. I like how you used the pliers to squeeze the calipers new tip for me.

One of the major reasons for rotor warping is not tightening the lug nuts to the right torque spec. and in the right pattern. Shops will sometimes sabotage cars by over-torquing them. Also, it can be VERY hard to remove rotors sometimes. Passing large bolts with big washers and nuts through the caliper bracket bolt holes so the big bolts impinge on the back of the rotor and then slowly tightening them will pop the toughest rotors off. I use a little penetrating oil on the hubs first and tap them with a hammer too. Wear eye protection.

Yup, I always ever so slightly file the edge, and use anti seize on them. Here in NY you put a coating on the bearing face where the rotor sits, you remove the slide pins and anti seize them, etc. Even the hub of the rotor where the wheel rests. Really saves alot of work when you gotta do it again

@@TonyF1MMA Doesn't matter. 2 tons of uncontrolled steel crashing down onto concrete doesn't do anything any good. There could be something under there that gets squished (not just the soft fleshy bits) or flipped out at high velocity (physics is not your friend). Not to mention the damage that could be done to the vehicle itself. And let's say you get lucky and there are no injuries or damage. Now you've got that corner of the vehicle in contact with the ground and your (likely only) floor jack is now pinched in there. How do you propose to get the car back up in the air? I've done a ton of brake jobs too. I'm not a pro but I thought about it when I was younger. I've been turning a wrench on my own and my friends cars for over 30 years and I've had a floor jack fail on me once. It's rare, but it happens. Never cut corners where safety is concerned.

If bolts are stuck it is not so easy like he shows it. So if you are going to do it yourself you need to be able to deal with that kind of situation. Some men can and some men can't. Also working on brakes can be a very dirty job, so if you do not want to get your hands/clothes/tools/floor/shoes dirty pay the money. And, you see Scotty sitting on the ground, kneeling on the ground, bending, etc. So unless you are flexible enough to do these things you will not be able to do this job. And...for many of these jobs you end up swearing a lot, so you must know a lot of profanity.
