How To Replace an RV Window | RV Window Replacement Made Easy!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When one of our RV's windows fogged over, we considered an OEM replacement, or fixing it ourselves with a DIY repair kit. But we found out about a great company that makes custom windows that make RV window replacement a breeze.
For those of you who are visual learners, you'll appreciate our step-by-step tutorial video, above. But if you're partial to the written word, the steps are laid out in the post on our website about this same project: www.thervgeeks.com/rv-window-...
Our new window was custom-built by Peninsula Glass in Vancouver, WA, and it’s absolutely beautiful!
It just so happens that we visit Vancouver fairly often because it's home to two of our favorite companies that supply great products for RVers: Tough Top Awnings and Roadmaster. Now we have three awesome RV suppliers, literally within sight of each other!
In this video, we'll show you the step-by step instructions for measuring, ordering and replacing an RV window, plus a factory tour showing the meticulous process of custom-making them.

    Thanks Belle! We actually started using that tip when we replace the silicone caulk around the shower doors. Takes a little longer, but allows us to end up with a final result that looks better than professional. :) Just be sure to remove the tape as quickly as possible after finishing, before the caulk starts to skin over.

Though we were replacing a different window configuration for a different RV, your instructions were so clear we were able to apply what you were doing to our own TT. We just successfully replaced our own window following your coaching and hints along the way (spray with water!?!?!? :-) ). Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Ray and Lindsay

    I started my Redo the Window project a few days ago... a 20 minute job of removing them turned into about 4 hours ! 4 of the 12 phillips head screws in my side front window were so tight I needed a Vice Grip to break them free and 2 of them were broken in the window frame. After about 10 hours of work I was able to Re Butyl Tape them and put them back in... My windows didn't leak....but the previous owner did a terrible job caulking them and they looked like Hell ! Butyl Tape should be Renamed Brutal Tape...that stuff is Brutal to clean up ! I just tried the front window and they are all the same as the side window.... How in the Hell am I going to get this done with these 24 screws stuck in the Frame. You have no idea what it is to have my luck !

  • @RVgeeks

    @RVgeeks

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Steve. The tape we used is what Motion Windows provided with the replacement window we installed. It's a double-sided, closed-cell foam tape. They sell it on their website in different thicknesses (1/8" or 3/16"... both are 5/8" wide) here: www.rvwindows.com/shop-parts/#!/Double-Sided-Adhesive-Closed-Cell-Foam-Tape-Per-Foot/p/13953750/category=3270217 If you're not sure what thickness you need, you could try calling Peninsula Glass (at 360-944-4446) to ask. They may be able to explain when/why you'd need each thickness.

    Great vid as usual! Question. If I am just resealing a window( removing and reistalling? Can I still use the foam tape you used? Or should I use butyl tape? Thanks for all the great how too vids.

  • @RVgeeks

    @RVgeeks

    8 жыл бұрын

    Thanks William! The window we had replaced under warranty many years ago was re-sealed with butyl tape and we don't like the result. It's not what came from Newmar, and not nearly as neat as the closed-cell foam tape, as it squishes out around the edge of the window over time, requiring occasional clean-up. If you're taking out the window and then re-installing it, we'd go with the foam tape if you can get some. We're not positive where to buy it, so we just sent a note to Peninsula Glass inquiring about it, and they already replied with this link: www.rvwindows.com/shop-parts/#!/Double-Sided-Closed-Cell-Foam-Tape-Per-Foot/p/13953750/category=3270221 We just measure our tape (we still have some left), and it's 5/8" wide and 1/8" thick and we're pretty sure it's "high density" closed cell foam. You should check the specs and make sure it's compatible with your window, or at least use it as a guide to the correct type of tape to use. Hope this helps. Please let us know how you make out.

    Great informational video! I have a 2016 Keystone Springdale with corrugated aluminum siding. The windows were installed with a plumbers putty (?) exterior seal. Any videos on removal and reinstallation of those? Keep up the great work! And Thanks!

    Thanks for the nice comments and great question, Robert! We're familiar with the corrugated bodywork on your Keystone, but we've never worked with, or even examined the window mountings. We're guessing that they must use a "thicker" (for lack of a better word) sealant around the edge to deal with the varied distance between the window frame and the siding due to the corrugated shape? It's possible that they use putty tape. If you're not familiar with putty tape, you can see us using it in our video about installing a window awning here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYScksaqpKivgNI.html If it is putty tape, it can be pretty easily removed and replaced. But putty tape isn't all that thick, so we're not sure if that's what you've got. Maybe a comparison between what you see us using in the awning video and what you see on your rig will give you and idea if that's what it is.

    That is butyl caulking. The original one part bulk sealant. Never dries out, always attracts dirt. You can get it out, it cleans up with mineral spirits.

    Great video guys....found this after finding someone either threw a rock or tried prying the drivers side slider window open. So, now I need a new 'slider' window. Only thing on our Tiffin, is that this area is a compilation of 3 different window sections in one, so I only need one of the sections, that being the slider, as the screen is still fine. Just thought I'd query, why you mention' Penninsula Windows' but it's 'Motion Windows' in the link? Thanks for the helpful video!

The owner was proud to emphasize that they do everything they can to source all of their supplies and components from other US manufacturers, too. So it's not just the final product that's made here... but almost everything that goes into it, too. Makes you feel good ordering from them.

  • @RVgeeks

    Hmmm... good question. We don't think you can just get a replacement part for the one side of the window, but you COULD send the whole window in to Peninsula Glass and have them just repair the part that's fogged. Or, you could look into the self-repair kits that are out there. You'll still have to remove the window and dismantle it yourself in order to fix the one fogged side, but it would save you the cost of shipping. And last, but not least, if you're able to find someplace local (Peninsula Glass is in Vancouver, Wa, just north of Portland, OR), they could do that for you, too. Hope this helps!

    Hi there. I watched this video of yours and it looks like you might be able to help me. The rubber on the frame of the windows of my Class-C seem to have shrunk. It's the hard rubber on the edge of the glass. When I look from inside I can actually see the gap. Now when it rains the & gets in there. I have tried to seal it up with clear silicone but it's not too effective and is unsightly. Can you tell me a. What is the name of that part. When I google 'window rubber replacement' it is not where the problem is. Also it's not where a person normally uses butyl to seal the window. And b. How do I go about fixing/replacing that part. Just keep in mind I live in South Africa and can thus not take the RV to one of your shops. Can one import that part? Could a truck shop do the work? I am not technical so am relying on either youtube videos or people like yourself for guidance. 😉 I think once I know the name of that part I should be able to find a guiding video. Unless perhaps you can send me a link. 😆 Thanks. Kind regards. Christina. I have some pics for you to assess but dont know how to include them in this post. If you can tell me how I will send them to you.

    Hello RVgeeks, question: do you recommend to have windows replaced or fixed when they have the seal moving ? kind of looks like a snake or something inside the window. Our coach was manufactured in 2000 so we are not sure if fixing the existing ones is the best option or replacing them. What has been your experience?

  • @RVgeeks

    +A Needlepoint In Time The only experience we have is replacing with a Peninsula Glass custom made replacement shown in this video, and we're very happy with it. The research we did prior to making that decision led us to go that route, as repair of the current window, or replacement with factory original, wasn't much cheaper, but with more likelihood of inferior results.

    @@RVgeeks Thanks again. I couldn't find suitable replacement tape similar to the gray one. So, I settled for a foamcore butyl instead. I might even shoot a bit of spray foam that doesn't expand very much in the gap left in the interior prior to screwing in clap trim. Probably overkill but I'll try not to break the slider using silicone spray as the top plastic bump stopper piece got broken and thus had exposed screw head that contacted the corner of glass and exploded. Fortunately Winnebago was gracious enough to contact their window manufacturer and sent me replacement under warranty even though it was just over 1 year and partially my fault I suppose for not checking the window for missing bump stop??? Anyhow, all is good now.

  • @RVgeeks

    @RVgeeks

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question Eric! The closed-cell foam we used (divided by Peninsula Glass with the window) actually seals so well that no additional sealant is required at all. The only reason we put it around the top is because that is where Newmar had sealant on the original window, where water would be most likely to enter, so it wouldn’t be a bad thing to replace it. But the rest of the window was sealed well enough to prevent leaks with the original window seal and no caulk, so we figured that it would be even better now without adding anything beyond the closed-cell foam. So far so good, with no leaks at all!

  • @RVgeeks

    @RVgeeks

    6 жыл бұрын

    What a great question! There is actually, at least on our RV. Because the side of the windows that slide are inset behind the stationary sections, the stationary side is pretty flush with the outside bodywork. So, looking out the windows from inside... on the DRIVER'S side of the RV, the sliding sections of each window are on the LEFT, and slide to the right, and on the CURB side of the RV, the sliding sections are on the RIGHT and slide to the left. That means that the sliding section always slide toward the FRONT of the RV to open, and toward the rear to close, meaning that the stationary sections are always forward of the sliding ones. I'm pretty sure that's done to prevent rain from being driven into the seam between the sections while driving at speed, since the stationary (more flush) sections are always forward of the sliding (inset) sections. Hope that's clear! 😊
