Cool! Would it be good to pin the new elastic to the old and use that to draw it through? I need to do this to a cotton skirt.

yes! i've done that, and it works great if the channel is open the whole way through. also, if you're concerned that the pin may come undone mid-channel, you can try this: i recently temporarily sewed new elastic to old drawstrings on 2 pairs of leisure pants and pulled the elastic through that way. the only drawback is that you have to take more drastic measures if everything is sewn down someplace, like a sneaky back seam. i've replaced drawstrings with elastic in those situations, too, but you have to unpick more and resew more.

Before pulling through and out, I would have attached several threads to the old elastic, pulled it out and then attach the threads to the new elastic pulling it through with the threads. (unless you were showing a 'how to' from a new piece.) either way ...
