How To Replace AC Power Box

The "pull out" box located outside by your AC is very simple to change, and a service call on this may cost $100-$300....so do it yourself !

    how much harder is it to replace a circuit box though? mine gets super hot as of late and it knocks out the power.. was told its just the breaker but i can see a small spark and a bright flash in the back when i kick it back on

    so was there a loud bang when you turned on the power? Looks like your pullout is going to connect the two legs of your 240 volt line with each other. If you label the terminals left to right 1 through 4, then your pullout is going to connect 1 with 2 and 3 with 4. To do it right, you need to switch the cables on 2 and 3.

  • @michaeldevaney2804

    I am rerouting wiring from a 30 amp outlet to 30 amp fused disconnect box. The existing wiring contains 4 wires (red,black,white and bare ground wire). The line side of the disconnect accommodates 2 hot wires (in this case red and black) and ground wire. Since the existing cable is 4 wires my inclination is let the white wire rest inside the disconnect box sealed with wire nut and tape. Would that be correct

  • @thebaldhandyman1103

    No....the white is neutral so should be tied to ground if possible...ideally you have 2 whites to connect but at least grounded.

    The bare wire would be the ground. The white is not needed so it can be capped off.

  • @GDanielCho

    @GDanielCho

    are you including the signal wires to the indoor unit in the 5 wires? The disconnect should always be 8/3, 10/3, 12/3, etc as in #/3, 3 being the number of wires. Two hots and then one ground, the first number is the gauge wire which is dependent on the breaker needed, 20 amp, 30 amp, etc. Look at the gauge of wire, they shouldnt all be the same thickness, the three significantly larger ones, two wires covered usually black and red, or black and white, then one with bare wire same thickness without sheathing which is your ground. the resulting 2 left over wires are your signal wires to go to the indoor unit that tells the compressor when to kick on and usually runs the fan on 110v. But usually its more than two wires so look at the manufactures manual since I've never heard of just two signal wires to run a indoor unit. minium it should be three, a hot, neutral, and then a ground if the indoor unit is running on 110v

  • @thebaldhandyman1103

    @thebaldhandyman1103

    Well given what you said on your last sentence it's possible that it could be your disconnect... a loose wire will also cause that to happen, or if the wires are in the wrong position like if your ground is on a line leg. The box would be probably the cheapest and easiest to repair, beyond that you have another issue that has to do with the condensing unit itself

    The Bald Handyman -I wiggle the power line coming from the condenser unit to the AC disconnect box while unit was running by mistake and spark and smoke from was visible from the AC disconnect box. What I found by accidentally touching it was the actual power lines inside the grey tube, somehow melted and the wire wrap was exposed and the wires came apart. Not sure how that could have happen but, I have pictures of if you want to share in future posting for things to be on the lookout for.....oh the AC disconnect box is about 20-25 years old not much activity on that side of home besides normal weather and lawn maintenance

    So with this box I can get 220 voltage even if I have 110 voltage throughout my house ?

  • @thebaldhandyman1103

    @thebaldhandyman1103

    4 жыл бұрын

    The way a 220 box would work as with any 220 outlet is that two 110 legs are brought together independently that have their own breaker. So it is not the Box where the magic is, it's bringing together two different legs into the box
