    You’re an idiot. If a breaker trips you should diagnose the problem. To keep resetting the breaker will cause the compressor to burn the refrigerant and contaminate the system. Ohm out the compressor and fan motor before resetting the breaker. No one should use your advice. They could get seriously hurt or dead. This man is not qualified. Do not use this video for help.

    what's up sam I have a ac only Luxaire/york ac unit 17 seer ... worked fine since install from few years ago but I went to turn it on last week and didn't notice cold air so I went to check condenser and it wasn't running I went to basement checked the breaker I believe it was tripped not sure if it was already off due to past storm surges earlier this spring but this was first time I went to open ac .. anyways I turned Breaker back on and the condenser was short cycling the fan and compressor would click on and off but then the fan wouldn't even spin any more but the compressor would click on on off. so I pulled the disconnect and retried same thing.. its a ecm component w fan motor type condenser the capacitor doesn't have a wire that comes from the fan like a psc motor would have but I do see the fan motor does have a wire that comes off and does run back to the run cap .... you think the run cap is the issue or contactor ..?? the breaker never tripped out since the first time I found it tripped

    My AC Breaker trips instantly when setting to cool. The outdoor unit is a Carrier 2020 model that was installed new last year. Anything ese I can try before having to call a tech? short on cash. 1. I tested the 3 compressor pins and they all show OL. 2. I disconnected the compressor to see if breaker would trip without it and breaker does not trip, Fan Spins also.(This makes me think there is not an issue with Breaker nor contactor and maybe it is an issue with the compressor or wiring.) 3. Outdoor unit is very clean, and I dont see any visual wiring issues.

    Two points: 1) You can access the compressor connection much easier inside the control box on the unit. No need to remove the fan to disconnect the compressor. 2) I would advise against using the outside pull out disconnect to test after you pretty much proved the compressor was shorted. That plug in bar can explode or arc violently. I would still use the breaker is a final test.

    One of my inexperienced co-workers actually tried to hold a breaker closed and the shorted compressor blew up the power lines running to the house. I am not sure why the main breaker did not blow but it was an old power panel. The power company came out and replaced the power lines with no questions asked. I have seen my share of shorted compressors but I have never seen a shorted device blow up power lines before.

Turned out the capacitor was bulging and was about to fail! Replaced it never had that issue again!

    I do have these videos posted on my channel as well. Testing case to ground, wiring, how to properly test each leg on a compressor, reading schematics etc. Those are more in depth videos in regards to troubleshooting. This is just a quick diagnostic test. In my experience in the field rarely is the tripped breaker due to the breaker being bad. I do have videos posted on my channel how to test the breaker as well that are in depth. With that being said everyone has their own way of systematically troubleshooting components. This channel is more for people new to the industry who are not as technical and comprehensive with field training such as yourself. Thank you for posting as you do make a great point 🙂. Again this is for those who are new to the industry and I do appreciate individuals such as yourself who can add to this channel to help those new to the industry with added input and knowledge. I have been doing this type of work for years HVAC, appliance repair, plumbing, electrical etc. I dedicated my channel to helping others always reminding myself that not everyone has the technical capabilities as others and they just need help understanding the basics.👍

    A year ago I replaced a bad compressor and the run capacitor. Within the last three weeks, my AC breakers tripped because of a bad capacitor, at least that's what I thought caused the trip. After replacing the faulty capacitor the breakers still trip, but intermittently. What that means is I can reset the breakers, turn the AC on and everything works fine for a few minutes, a couple of hours and even several hours at a time, then they trip again. This has been a consistent and annoying cycle. Three days ago when I reset the breakers I heard a quiet buzzing sound inside the panel, but it went away after a second or two. This is now the norm each time I reset the breakers. Are the breakers bad? Should I be concerned with the buzzing sound? Oddly, the breakers haven't tripped in the last 12 hours.

  • @MoreThanMaintenance

    @MoreThanMaintenance

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes I would be concerned. In this video the breaker tripped because the compressor kept grounding. When I pulled the compressor the bottom was corroded and rusted. There are multiple reasons a breaker will trip and is hard to diagnose without actually visually inspecting in person nonetheless here are a few that come to mind. Obviously the breaker can be the issue which I have had considering you have stated you replaced the compressor and capacitor a year ago. I have had issues where when the compressor was replaced the installer did not install a filter drier thus the possibility of allowing condensable (debris) to cause a restriction in the evaporator coil causing high pressures causing compressor to lock/ trip breaker. Its possible the compressor is faulty. There are a plethora of issues... I know its difficult to really isolate but these are a few things that run through my mind when I run into or have experienced this issue. There are a lot of great experienced HVAC techs who can add to other troubleshooting ideas.

    Yeah, my A/C breaker was 25 years old and kept tripping so I decided to remove the breaker to examine it. The condensing unit was not drawing excessive current when I measured it with my Amprobe meter. How did I know the breaker was bad? The breaker came out in pieces when I tried to remove it. LOL! The contacts on the breaker looked charred. An electrician told me it was probably damaged in a lightning strike.

    Solution: my ac (independent) breaker was triping after 15min , I removed the breaker , there was a screw behind the switch which adjusted its sensitivity if I unscrew it , it was tripping easily , so I tightened it , then I attached it's all 4 wires in different way , by cleaning the ends and reshaping them just in case , tightened all 4 again , it stoped tripping ! . (turn off all the power supply 1st)

    I agree and my apologies if I did not clarify in my video. I did inspect the capacitor no issues detected. I personally have not had this issue and I have been working on AC's for 5-6 years and have learned from experience never say never! On this particular compressor the issue was it kept grounding/shorting. When I pulled the compressor the bottom was completely corroded rusted. Thank you for your honest input and I did not feel disrespected especially if you are teaching me and others from your personal experience.

    In my case and scenario, this was the best case to test for my compressor.... I had originally tested my compressor by testing short to ground, and calculating Total ohms resistance. Everything added up, no short to ground. Perfect Ohm reading. (good compressor in theory).... but when I tested just like this video, I tripped the break. Knew then compressor was bad. I thought the two other tests I did previously, (should diagnose the compressor) why did the two other tests I did, said my compressor was good, when in reality it’s not? Any clues ?

    Ohming a circuit and load testing a circuit is totally different. Ohm checks only continuity, load testing checks the integrity of the circuit.

    Your troubleshooting method is called a smoke test. Just keep turning on the faulty equipment, and see what burns up. Not good! Why not use your trusty $300 multi-meter to check for shorted compressor or condenser fan motor before you weld the circuit breaker? Better still, just stick to plumbing issues.

  • @MoreThanMaintenance

    The electrical panel or the panel on the condenser? . If you mean the compressor here is a simple analogy. Sleeper cars are cars that are bought with the purpose of making the opponent think because the paint is chipped and has a few ding... maybe even has some rust that it is a slow vehicle... however on the inside the person who owns the cars swaps the motor... transmission etc. A condenser is the same. The panel or exterior case may appear to be worn due to the damage produced by the natural elements... sun... rain... etc However... the coils are in pristine condition... capacitor is good... contactor is fine... any HVAC technician will tell you that if the coils are in good shape and the compressor goes bad there is no reason to replace entire condenser just the compressor is fine. In regards to electrical panel... as long as the bus bar is in tact there is no need to replace the panel... replacing the breaker will suffice. I have had to replace electrical panels because of the bus bar being corroded and or severely damaged... in that case you would be correct. Thank you for the added input.
