How To Replace a Water Pump on a Toyota 4runner V6 3VZE 1988-1995

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Installing a water pump on a V6 3VZE Toyota isn't very hard but it is under the timing belt and can be intimidating if you have never done it. You can follow this video for a timing belt kit install also but I literally only replace the water pump in this repair. My second generation 4 runner blew a heater hose and had a fairly bad over heating incident. Luckily the the Heads and head Gaskets survived and the only damage was a bad coolant leak. In hindsight I wish I would have replaced the water pump gasket, reusing the old water pumps and bought a new timing belt idler pully instead of a new water pump. The repair was fun and enjoyable to do and I would recommend it to all the DIY mechanics out there.

Just doing the same thing my 4Runner has sat around for 10 years, replaced the gas tank, fuel pump, plugs wires, she fired right up and runs great till the steam came pouring out. Well it has a good rad must be the thermostat so I replaced that, still same thing overheating, now it’s try a new water pump, the guy at the parts told me the 3.0’s are notorious for overheating and it could be a head gasket. Ugh, I’m about to tear the front off the engine, thanks to your vid I think I can do this, if it turns out to be the head gasket I may try to swap a 3.4 into this thing as it has a great body and interior.🤞 PS, I discovered if you are just doing the water pump there is no need to remove the big bolt and the pulleys, I had a tough time breaking the bolt loose and the pulleys would not come off, they spun a bit though which threw the mark off but it’s OK the belt stayed tight.

AISN sells a complete OEM kit with contains the idlers, tensioner, spring, water pump, gasket and timing belt for not too much money. I found one on ebay for $50 and had it installed for $200. Those 3vze engines are durable if they are not abused. The body will rust away before you will lose an engine especially if you have gotten past 150k miles. Mine is at 230K miles and with the help of some fiberglass, Bondo and home garage body work it is still presentable uses a qt. of oil in 1k mile. 5 speed transmission just keeps on keeping on. Plannning on running it to 300K if I can. Good luck.

I have all the same symptoms but it leaks when cold and hot? Do you think it is a water pump?

Do not touch the harmonic balancer unless you plan to replace the timing belt, I did what he is doing but I could not get the lower pulleys to come off. I made the mistake of taking the nuts off the pulleys to see if that would help, when I was doing that I could feel the pulley rotate on the shaft. Also when I tried to break the big bolt loose it rolled on the floor a bit, I blocked the wheels and the bolt did break loose. Now the marks on the upper pulley were at the bottom so I rotated the big bolt till it all lined up again. After the new water pump went on you have to be very careful when you put the belt on as the tensioner can throw one of the upper pulleys off the mark. Unfortunately now I can’t tell when the bottom pulley is correct on the mark because it did rotate on that shaft and the mark is no good now, after it went back together it runs like shit the timing is off. I will take it apart again tomorrow and with the belt off the top pulleys I will rotate the bottom back a notch to see if that gets it back in time. I should have realized there is no need to touch the bottom just set it on the marks and the water pump exchange is no big deal, hope this thing doesn’t blow up if I can’t get it timed right again!🤷🏻‍♂️

mine is have the exact same problem, only leaks when it's hot, I think it's the pressure built up before the thermostat opens and the previous owner already replaced the timing belt and water pump they have less than 6,000 miles on them so I might try and just replace the gasket, did you fix your leak?

Yes my leak is fixed now. I think I could have gotten away with just a gasket now with the benefit of hindsight.

@@BenHuttash that's good, I went ahead and ordered the aisin water pump mainly because it comes with the metal gasket, I plan on doing some roadtrips with this and 40 bucks was worth the piece of mind, I'll definitely be using your video to help me with the install

Can coolant be going into the engine because the bad gasket? I have a 95 4Runner has the same over heat issue. I changed my water pump. Then the coolant still disappears and I have to keep adding coolant once a while. I don't see any water leaking but instead i saw some oil came out from the engine gasket. Would you give me some advise and some hints what happened to my coolant?

Does your oil look ok? Over heating can do all sorts of stuff like warp the heads and cause either a blown head gasket or a leaking one. Do you hear bubbles in the heater? What I’m getting at is the coolant can get into the oil or be burned off in the combustion chamber with a head gasket problem. Might be good to test it with a head gasket test kit. It’s basically a chemical test kit that samples the gases coming out of the radiator looking for combustion gases to indicate if the head gasket is compromised or not.

@@BenHuttash 👍👍👍Thanks for your recommendation, I think I am going to buy a combustion tester to test and see if my coolant went in the engine.

Just start with pulling the motor. And replace with 3.4 . The 3vze is the worst motor toyota ever made. Ask any toyota dealer mechanic.
