I did this video well installing a new motor on a jeep wrangler tj 1999, changing or replacing a engine can be very time consuming especially if this is your first time, i highly suggest having a mechanic or few mechanically inclined friends look over your work as there is allot of moving parts going on and you want everything to line up as perfect as possible. hopefully this diy walk through tutorial helps you do it yourself and take some of the guessing work out of it for you. Hopefully this helps you remove your jeep wrangler tj motor and swap in a new engine.

I just bought a 2.5 TJ motor with the fly wheel and clutch still install, to replace my motor in an automatic. I drove myself crazy looking for this inside bushing based on this video. There was no bushing, the fly wheel & clutch came off and the auto torque converter fit right on, No prob. . .

You must’ve really lucked out keep in mind this is the 4.0 L motor and that was probably the difference I put that part Specifically in because I didn’t see that bushing and I put it back together and the torque converter wouldn’t bolt up properly to the flex plate so I had to unbolt the transmission slide it back and then die grind it out

Great video. Very informative. I may be doing this in the near future. But I was thinking wouldn’t it have been easier to pull the engine and trans together as one piece?

Yes if your pulling the trans then yes if you don't need to pull the trans for anything the engine swap can be done with out pulling the trans

can i put a 98 4.0 in my 99tj? 99 was a specific year for the 4.0 so if so what would i have to change

I have since found after bolting my motor up to the existing auto trans, that the motor is seized solid. I loosened the bell housing bolts and motor turns fine. I cannot get the flex plate to bolt to the torque converter as they won't turn independently. Gonna have to pull the tranny. Thanks for your video though.

I would double check torque converter is seated in pump proper. You already checked for the the bearing in end of crank so if there’s no bearing I would make sure the torque converters seated deep enough

I'm curious, have you ever tried to put a Toyota engine in the Jeep? Or even a v8 engine in it?

What's the reason for marking torque converter and flywheel? Are you saying it only goes one way?

Best to keep it in the same orientation it came off in if the screw holes do line up.

If I'm honest it takes quite a bit if I were you if you're going to put the time and energy in just go straight to an LS swap 😜

Depending on how mechanically inclined you are you can do this in a day I broke it up over a bunch quite a few days because I was limited with time after work
