Great Video and very informative. The runout on my 1978 Drill Press continued to worsen, so I searched on and found your page. I looked at taking the approach and thought I had some metal stock at home, but I didn't. Anyway, I took a trip to Lowes and Tractor Supply and just wandered around looking at hardware and possible solutions. I came across strap hinges at Tractor Supply, and I was like, this would probably work. Bought one for less than 5 dollars and it took less than a minute or two to pop the taper out of the drill press. Open the strap hinge to 90 degrees, put one side into the slot, tap it with the hammer, and bingo. Thank you for your video and for helping to stretch our imaginations.

Great information Mike. When I was working in a tool & die shop the knockout device you made is called a "Drift Key" Also because of the bigger chuck we would insert smaller chuck in bigger one to accommodate smaller bits. Having the keyless option is nice thou. One last thing when when I would install chuck all I needed to do was shove in by hand. No hard pressure was required. The morse taper held in very well. Thanks for sharing the information. Hope everything is going well with you.

This video came up in my feed. Solely as a FYI, the triangular part used to remove an arbor is called a drift. It was nice to see you clean all the tapers with a solvent. Enjoyed the video.

I would start by getting a owners manual. It’s probably list in that. Or a google search for your drill press may get you some info

The keyless chuck is a pain in the butt (!) and prone to breakage. I have to agree with the previous posting from Tom, use a smaller chuck in the larger one and forget the keyless version they just don't stand up especially with larger bits.

Frustration:: I’m trying to cypher what I need to use collets instead of this 1/2 Morse Chuck on my 8” Tradesman drill press. I’ve searched all over researching along way what I need as to setting up to mill? Any input would be appreciated other than buy a mill for your talking about a poor hillbilly on a budget hence , old 8” tradesman just bought used

Mills are different then a drill press. If I understand what your trying to do. Witch is trying to make the drill press do the job of a milling machine. I not sure how to direct you on this as I never used a mill before, so not real sure what kind of tooling it is. I do know the drill press can handle some slight milling operations. With the lateral force on a drill press can force the the chuck to fall out. Plus the speeds are not right for milling. The press is probably not heavy enough as well. Many reason not to do this, but I get it mills are expensive and if your not doing much of it I see wanting to give it a shot.

The thing about trying to use a drill press as a mill is that a drill press is built to handle load in one axis (up and down), whereas a mill is designed to handle load in 3 axes. Trying to mill with a drill press is like trying to fly with a bicycle... If you're able to get it to work, you might just be one of the wright brothers, haha!

At 1:33, I don't have that cut to be able to push it down and out, all I have is a small indentation but nothing to go from there so I'm stuck wondering how the heck am I gonna get it off :(

I would check with the manufacturer or service manual to see how it comes off. Some of the chucks doe have a screw up through the center of the chuck. Confirm with service manual.

@@mfwoodshop - I honestly want to know. Over the years I've seen this many, many times (where someone's comment is literally just the uploader's (or some other commenter's) name). And I've asked many times but they NEVER answer me. I'm genuinely curious why. What does it mean? What is the purpose? There must be some reason. What the hell is it?
