    Excellent video. I had no idea that the chuck was a taper fit. Got the chuck off my drill in seconds after seeing this.

    This was used in a shop class as examples about how not to remove and replace an arbor/chuck. Among other things: "very quickly thrust it up into the spindle" - this can seat things crooked (examples exist.) Even with the tang, some rotational motion is needed to ensure proper seating before firmly tapping one (1) time with a dead blow.

    What if the taper inside the spindle is scored or scratched from dust and the chuck taper spining inside the spindle? Can that be sanded smooth by using some emery cloth inside or does the spindle need to be replaced?

    You also neglected those who have a smaller drill press which doesn't have a morse taper. Those drill presses have a male jacobs taper on the end of the drill press spindle which fits into a female jacobs taper on the chuck. Can't use a drift to remove those chucks from the spindle. Also I cringed at your hitting the drift that way. If you tap the drift from underneath while holding the chuck so it won't fall, that will not damage the chuck, morse taper or the spindle socket. When reintalling, if you install it with your hand first and then place a block under the chuck with jaws retracted into the chuck body, you can move the drill press spindle quill downward into a block of wood and that will seat the chuck's male morse taper properly into the female morse taper of the drill press' spindle/quill.

    This article does not show how to replace the drill press chuck, as the chuck is still attached to the tapered spindle. How is the chuck removed from the spindle to enable a new chuck to be installed?

    If your Drill Press is similar to the Delta 17-925 and the Chuck is separate from the tapered shaft you can do what we show in the second part of the video. Using a hammer and a piece of wood or a rubber mallet you tap the top of the chuck and turn and tap and turn until it comes of the shaft.

    retract your chuck's teeth all the way into the chuck body so they don't get messed up if you're going to let it fall on the table. This made me cringe.

    This isn't as much of a video of how to remove a drill chuck as it is how to remove a morse taper. A good add on would be how to separate the morse taper from the chuck itself.

    How NOT to remove a chuck with an oak stick, How NOT to install a morris taper using a quick thrust. If the chuck does not have a key removal hole use a wedge "gently" between the top of the chuck and the body of the column. Install the indexed morris taper slowly while turning it to align the key (the flats on the end of the taper) once aligned push the taper up firmly. Then use a mallet or dead blow using ONE upward strike on the body of the chuck. DO NOT STRIKE IT MULTIPLE TIMES ! as this may actually loosen the fit.

    YosarianCat22 What you are describing sounds like you have a defective Start Capacitor on your motor. If the manufacturer doesn't list a capacitor for your unit you can cross it over using the specs on the old capacitor. They're available on line or from a local electrical supplyhouse.

    You are right. I haven't been able to locate any good information for his Cummins Drill Press. It may be that with the specs from the part you are trying to replace a replacement table from Delta or Jet Wilton would work.

    His suggestion to use a wood block to drive off the chuck is VERY BAD ADVICE. I did this and drove the large spindle out of the head of the drill press. Reinserting the large spindle is very tricky with two washers deep down in the hole that have to be aligned. I got it back together but it took allot of time and I had to remove the head of the drill press to flip it upside down to get it back together. Get the metal wedge tool that drives the chuck itself out of the taper. This guy should delete this video. He is doing a great disservice by giving out bad advice. I will never do business with Replacement Parts.com

    Umm, why? No sparks coming out, nor hard hits against metal or stone that can generate chips flying (if you see the hammer chipping, throw it away in garbage, that's where it belongs. Hammers suppose to be ductile unless its a claw hammer for nails - those are brittle and should not be used for pounding onto hard object and not enough inertia anyway. Better be safe, I know that, on the same idea you should wear a gas mask while hammering nails.. who knows :)

  • @danielcoleman3111
    @danielcoleman311110 жыл бұрын

    I cringe to see you abuse that dp. A drift should never be driven. If a drift needs a hammer at all, it should be hit up or down with a dead blow or lead hammer. Use a longer drift and you should be able to bump upwards with your hand and it should fall loose. Put something under the chuck to keep it from falling very far. When installing the chuck you should be able to retract the jaws, insert it into the spindle, and bump it against a piece of vertical wood with the quill feed. Find an old retired Nave machinist for a consultant. The will teach you tons.

    Daniel Coleman Daniel, I am a 30 year machinist and what you describe is very correct. I would have brought the quill up before hitting the chuck, either way in my opinion it will work. Good video non the less.
