How to Replace a Broken Slider on a Zipper

My zipper broke on my jacket and I figured this would be a great opportunity to show you how to repair the slider. How to replace/repair a slider on zipper chain when the zipper is already sewn to a garment.

    Having raised 4 kids and all of us wearing jeans and rugged jackets etc,.....and being a seamstress, I've fixed a lot of zippers, but don't think I've ever seen a locking zipper. Must be new since my zipper fixing, repairing, replacing days. This is fabulous information....just in case. Thanks for posting.

    My daughter's zipper has been stuck on her brand new jacket for months! I was just about to send it to the tailor to have the zipper replaced, and then I happened upon this post. This post saved the jacket, and saved me money! Thank you for sharing this info about the zipper lock! I simply added a keyring underneath the zipper pull to disengage the locking mechanism. No torn seams required.

    Just take off that little "clip" metal stopper at the top and the zipper can be wiggled right off. No need to rip out top of zipper. You can put the new slider on over the fabric only part of the zipper and then put the little metal clip back on. Pinch with pliers and zip slider down.

    I feel really lucky to have found you on youtube. Unfortunately, I think I happen to have a zipper problem that cannot be sorted with your advice and think I may have to stop wearing this ancient, battered, well-worn but much loved sheepskin jacket Ive had forever. The problem isnt really even the zip, its the fact that the material on one side at the bottom has worn away leaving a row of teeth. Ive ended up sewing the two sides of the track together and because it has to remain closed, I literally climb in and out of it lol!!! I dont care what people think, most of my family and friends know I love it but theres no way I can afford a new zip so, if there is ANYTHING in your repertoire that you think I can try and if you have the time to spend on this, then I would be forever grateful. You deserve many thanks for the service you provide, its selfless, considering you are a company who could be making lotsa bucks keeping this info to yourselves. I hope to hear from you but either way, thanks!!!

    See Lisa's comment below- she's got it right. Needle nose pliers to pull off zipper stop at top of jacket- slide broken zipper slide off, slide new one on, replace zipper stop--no sewing needed. The zipper stop is like a little clamp just above the last zipper tooth, and once you remove it, you can open it slightly by tapping a small flat head screwdriver into the open part- or just use a new zipper stop- either way, slide it into place, and crimp in down with the needle nose pliers. Fixed- no sewing. Why do people make you tube videos on "how to..." when they don't know how to do it themselves?

    Thanks for the video. It really helped. Unfortunately when I put the new slider and tried o to zip up the hoodie it it did not work (the zipper separated). I tried a number of new pulls and it did the same thing. I looked at the zipper carefully to make sure there was no damage to any teeth and did not see any. Since I completely lost the old zipper pull I can not compare it to the new ones (metal, bought at Joanne's).The zipper it self appears to be plastic (nylon).Could that be the issue?

    all zipper pulls have a number on the back or on the tip just replace the pull with a replacement that has the same number and there will be no problem closing because the teeth will be held in place.Hope this helps

    This is generally true. Most zipper factories put the gauge of the zipper on the back of the sliders as stated, however there are others that use a numbering system to track their die cast molds. I know a few factories that do that so just be careful.

    The size of zippers is measured in millimeters. I've seen a lot of zippers with no markings. What you can do when in doubt is measure the width of the inside of the slider or measure the width of the zipper when it is zipped. The most common sizes are 3mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 8mm, and 10mm. Sometimes you find an odd ball size but that is true for most zippers.

    As an alteration shop owner I have to say that I would fix your zipper with much less trouble and for about $7, on the spot. I would probably charge that much just to sew up the end for you, too. Totally unnecessary to open the end. Just pull the stopper off and wiggle on the slider.

    I'm guessing that if you're purchasing just the slider then the slider gauge is not fitting the teeth gauge. In fact, if it's separating when you try to close it, the slider gauge is too big. If you can measure the width of the teeth with the zipper closed, I can give you the gauge size that you should be looking for.

    I never have to unpick the seams when replacing a slider. Just use a tool to remove the top stop and the old slider can be wriggled off and the new one wriggled on (even if you have to fight it a little) and then a new top stop added. It takes me less than 2 minutes usually to change a slider.

    If you still have the pin (insert) then you may be able to clamp it back on. You have to be careful to keep the shape of the pin when clamping it on the zipper tape because it has to fit into the box to get the zipper to engage and zip up. If you don't have the pin anymore, then you're better off looking to replace the zipper.

    Replaced broken metal puller with cord puller. Why does my metal (guessing auto-lock) zip not move well when unzipped, but moves fine when a chain is formed (zipping up both sides)? Thanks

  • @UCANZippersUSA

    @UCANZippersUSA

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's correct, there's an auto-locking spring in the slider body that keeps the slider from falling down. When you grab the pull to move the zipper, that then pulls the lock out and let's the slider move freely. When the garment is unzipped, you only have one-side guiding the slider and it will occasionally get stuck on the zipper teeth. Hope that makes sense.
