How to Replace a Brake Switch on a 07 Silverado, Fixes Cruise Control Issue.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This "How To" video walks you through the process of replacing your brake switch. This is a fix a common problem where your cruise control only works sometimes after messing with the brake pedal while pressing the "set cruise" button on your steering wheel when you're at driving speed.
This may also be a fix to some brake light issues, but I never had any of those problems.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone, very worth making this video. This is my own little slice of fame lol. I have done more work to my truck that I did not make videos on, but if anyone has questions on replacing the crap door speakers, or how to install a Bak-flip bed cover (my favorite design due to a hard cover, fold-able, and level bed-height profile which is what you need for backing up in my opinion) I would be happy to help. My grill was home done as well with a roll of painters tape and two cans of automotive grade spray paint for plastics. My buddies where painting their bow ties black so I had to one up them lol.

the crap speakers have any effect on the door chime/headlight on warning?....think it comes through the speaker and mine is so quiet (set on loud) that I can't hear it......
@TruckOwnership101

andy heinrich If the speakers play music just fine (evenly on each side) then I would not suspect that to be an issue. To me what made them "crap" was their poor audio quality and one of mine was cutting in and out.

don't think either is on at all........bought new ones from GM...that's one of today's projects......love having the cruise working since I drive about 75 miles a day to go to/from work

andy heinrich that fixed all my issues. Right speaker was intermittent, left was dead. By the way, the door chime comes from the drivers door speaker. And the rattle in the drivers door was the two machine screws missing behind the door handle access cover. Borrowed one from each back door.......

Yes the crap speakers please lol the drivers side will cut in and out and sometimes not work at all
I just replaced my switch. You don't appreciate your cruise control until you have to live without it! Thank you for you help.
I was unable to figure out how to reassemble after destroying the switch trying to figure out how to remove the clip. This was very helpful. Thank you for clear images of the switch assembly.
Thank you for sharing this info. Once you are under the dash, all this comes together perfectly! Note: for trucks/SUVs with adjustable brake pedal height, the sensor is oriented to the passengers side. Same PN and parts to remove, just a different packaging as the up/down motor makes it a tighter fit. BUT not any more difficult to replace as this video shows. Tools: 10mm wrench and a medium flat head screwdriver. 10 minute job.
Can't thank you enough for sharing this info. Got the job done in about 20 minutes. I had to come back and watch this video once more to get a few details I missed the first time. Otherwise it would have been a ten minute job. I'm a 65 yr old plumber/preacher and not sure in the beginning if I could do it but your video made the job simple and quick. Thanks for saving me about $150.
very thorough and detailed, excellent job. There needs to be more videos of this quality made available.
Worked perfectly! My issue was the cruise control and this is great as we are about to head out on a 1000 mile trip. Many thanks for taking the time.
I want to THANK YOU for taking the time to do this tutorial...I was able to purchase this item and after watching your video, I was able to install this all by myself. Mind you, I am NOT a mechanically inclined person, but after watching your video it empowered me to try it, and by golly I did it! You have saved me over $200 dollars that I was quoted this morning to fix my engine code errors and my cruise control on my 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain Z71. Great Job teacher, your students are really lucky to have you!
Thank you. Watched your video today. Very helpful and appreciated. Not a mechanic, so videos like yours save folks like me a lot of time and money!
What's up Spencer and welcome from Rochester, MN! Great video brother! I had the same issue accept the ABD and "service traction control" light was also turning on along with the cruise control not working. It was the weirdest thing, bit everything functioned correctly (brake lights, brakes)! I've done allot of research, and determined that it was the brake light switch. Then I read someone else's post that said that the 10mm bolt may be too tight and the brake push rod may need some lube. Sure enough, I loosened the bolt, lubed behind the module and lubed the push rod... BAM! No more issue! The restriction was causing the module not to move along the natural path of motion. So guys give it a try... Cheap fix and will eliminate one possible culprit!

I second that! Went to change mine, found that the shaft was just really dirty on the brake pedal and causing it to bind/stick in the engaged position, not enough to make the brake lights come on, but enough that it would prohibit the cruise from functioning. I lightly sanded the post that the brake switch and the plunger attaches to and resolved my issue. Great video however and pretty much spot on for how to do this repair, most difficult part was trying to fit myself between the door and the seat to get under the dash!
Thanks Spencer! Ive had this problem for over a year now. So nice to have my cruise control back!

Makes the truck feel brand new again lol.
Your video helped me solve the intermittent cruise control problem on my 2008 Silverado. Your instructions helped me learn about the brake switch and how to replace it. My truck had the same symptoms you described. It began during the winter and seemed okay later during the summer. This fall as the weather cooled, it again became intermittent. After replacing the switch, the cruise worked fine for a few days and then became intermittent again but I was able to activate cruise by tapping on the brake switch. Finally took the switch out again, wiped off the old grease and applied new dielectric grease. Also applied grease at the point where the brake push rod enters the firewall through a rubber boot. I believe the push rod was sticking at that point. Cruise control seems to work 100% again. Thank you again for posting the video.
You are my hero!!! Thank you so much for this awesome detailed video. All other videos gave a basic general idea of how to fix the brake light issue but they were very vague. My 2004 Tahoe does not have a bolt or screw, just the clip. I hate that clip. This fix was a pain but you made it very doable for me. Thanks again.
Great video. Thanks for posting..one of the very few that actually shows you how to do the whole process!
This video is still helping folks- thanks for the assistance, I now have cruise control in my 07 Avalanche!

Was you light on the wheel?? I have 07 avalanche ltz...mine isn't on
Thanks a lot for the video. I've been riding with no cruise control for a while now and had enough. This video was perfect. The clip was a little tricky but I figured it out. Thanks again. You saved me a lot of money.
Best tutorial I've found on this particular task. Thanks, hope this fixes my cruse!
Thanks for showing me the clip. Not sure why others are having issues, your video answered my question. Probably took longer to watch the video than it did to change the switch, and my cruise works great again.
Can't thank you enough. Purchased the switch on Amazon for about $10. Reviewed your video for about 20 minutes, removed the old part, replaced with the new one and about 10 minutes later I was finished - thanks to you.
Very Helpful, allowed me to get a view of what I was in for and successfully accomplished. Thank you
Great video and a big help. Thank you Spencer. Just replaced the switch on my 2008 Silverado LT 2500 HD. My truck's symptoms were exactly like you described in your own repair. With your video, the toughest part was getting that darn clip off. After applying a light bit of pressure on the inside of the clip with a narrow blade screwdriver, it came off like a champ. Back on the road and able to activate the CC again at will! Thanks again.
Finally a video that you can really use to replace this switch! Thanks so much for making and sharing this video.
I have a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. Brake lights were working fine but cruise control stopped working. At first it was just intermittent. Owner's manual says cruise control will not work if brake fluid is below minimum level. Mine was right at the minimum line. I topped it off and it seemed to fix the problem. A few days later the cruise control stopped working all together. I watched your video and read the comments. Got a brake switch at local auto part store and installed it but the brake lights stuck on - apparently it was defective. Took it back and got another one and then it worked fine. Cruise control works properly now. Thank you Spencer!!
Replaced the switch on my 2000 Sonoma. I couldn't for the life of me get that clamp off. Mine was a little different but after watching your video it took about 30 seconds to remove mine. Thank you for the time to make this video!
Thanks for the video, gave me confidence that it is truly a diy project for me!
Thanks for covering the part about the clip, it was my hangup.
Another Happy customer! After watching your video was done in 20 minutes. Thanks so much! now time to replace the speaker, having the quiet door chime and intermittently going in and out.
thanks a bunch! was having some trouble with the little metal clip, but after watching, wasn't a big deal. appreciate the vid
The clip is the hard part to figure out... the explanation about how it works is very helpful. thank you.
Just replaced my switch on an 2008 Silverado 2500 HD.... Besides affecting my cruise control, it was sending voltage to my brake controller and applying my Travel Trailer brakes all the time... $20.00 fix and 30 minutes... not bad
Thanks for posting this :) I watched it before replacing my 2008 GMC Sierra switch. Very helpful.
Thank you! Your initiative and willingness to share this video greatly assisted me in fixing my cruise control issues with my truck. After discovering that it was highly likely that the brake switch was causing my cruise control not to work in my truck I bought a brake switch from O'Reilly for $18.39, and with your help that was all the money that I spent in order to fix my truck's cruise control myself. Again, thank you.

Spence, thanks a million. '07 GMC Sierra (72k miles), coming back from a trip last May, the cruise control shut down. It has only worked intermittently since then and has been completely down for the past few months. A couple searches landed me here and a short trip to Pep Boys, $20, and the video did the trick. I have a long trip in May again and this is a load off my mind. Again, many thanks. tommy
Changed it out just like the video. Took less than 30 minutes. Good job for the video.
Great video, just what I was looking for. Thanks for posting it!
I just ordered the part from Rock Auto. I will install when it arrives. Thanks for the video. I'll try to follow it. Paul, Coatesville, PA 2010 Silverado Z71 V8
My 08 has same issue, can't wait till the weekend, love saving money. Thanks.
Your efforts were not in vein! Thank you very much for the instructions.
thanks for making this video. the cruise control was inop on my 2010 sierra. after watching this video, I went out and jiggled the switch. it started working intermittently so I changed the switch. cost 16 bucks in stock at carquest
very much appreciate the video along with all the responses. I easily changed out my brake light switch on my 09 gmc sierra denali and the cruise works again. One very interesting discovery though. The part number for the sierra series is 15861245 from gm. So when I removed my brake light switch it had a different part number on it. that part number was 25981009. So I called back the parts department at the local gm dealership and was told that the 25981009 switch belongs to the Yukon and all the other suv's gm produces. He was not able to tell me how that switch got into my truck since I bought the truck new. But the new switch works perfectly so far.
I have a 2008 Silverado; bought used in June. didn't use the cruise during the testdrive; brought it back to the dealer a day or so later to prove that it wasn't working. They did some tinkering and I even took it in for one appointment. Think I will try replacing the switch as per your video; nice work, btw! you seem like a very good teacher; bet the students enjoy you and your class!
Just fixed my sensor in ten minutes tops. Thanks for the help!!
Thanks! This fixed my cruise control too. The only thing I was still confused on was removing the clip but I found another video that helped that.

Great video! It was a big help in replacing the switch on my pickup!
Great video I'm going out to fix mine in a few. My issue was that it would not shift out of park, found info on a forum that the break switch was the fix. We'll find out!
Thank you this video work very good and it resolved the problem I was having with my cruise control once again thank you
Spence !! Great video all my research turns to the switch as well. I am going to switch it out! Wish me luck! Thanks again!
Thanks for the great video! Helped me fix a problem I thought would cost me alot more!
Thanks for the video. Helped me a lot and was able to switch it out with 10 minutes.
Thanks to your video I was able to fix the cruise with a $18 part from O'Reilly in under 10 minutes.
this worked perfectly on my wife's 2008 suburban, in addition switches are online for less than $15. i appreciate the video, it saved me a lot of time and money doing it myself
I have a 2007 GMC Envoy. It was identical in changing. I changed it in about 10 minutes. BTW i've contorted in ways i didn't know i could. LOL...recommend needle nose pliers and a flathead screwdriver. Took a little bit to figure the clip out. Not hard though. Easy peazy! Thanks a million!
Been having this same problem. Anxious to see if this repairs the issue. Thanks for posting.
Great instructions/good video and lighting and no Hillbilly music. Very helpful Thanks Guy
Immensely helpful video, especially during reassembly.
been having the same problem and think this just might be the solution to my problem. video was very helpful
Good vid man, helps a long to see before doing. Thanks. By the way to anyone doing this, you can get the OE ACDelco part off ebay for cheaper than the dealer even with shipping.
Great video - thanks for posting. Very clear and was the exact fix I was looking for.
Yo spencer! Ur video was exactly what I needed! I followed ur instruction to a tee and I got cruise now! Kudos to u for this video man. Thx! Joe in Chatt Tn. 2009 Tahoe ltz
My Brakes and Cruise quit on my Chevy, I had to do the same thing. Great Video by the way...
This video is awesome. I fixed my cruise control in 15 minutes thanks to Spencer's help with the clip. My 2008 Silverado cruise control had stopped working completely. Good as New now. Thank's
Thanks my cruise just took a crap this morning. I'll try this over the weekend.
I just picked up a switch and found where it was in the truck on the brake pedal but couldn't see good enough to take the clip off. Your video made it clear enough that tomorrow morning I plan on just going ahead and do it. Thanks so much

wallace freeman Glad to see this old video is still helping people! 🥰
Your video was not in vain. I leaned how to replace my brake switch viewing your video.
Thank you Spencer. My 07 Avalanche didn't have a 10mm bolt. It had a clip instead covering where you show the bolt to be. The clip is very springy. There is a little "J" ledge on the bottom of the clip you need to pull on first so the top of the clip can clear the ring around the shaft. I was then able to get a small screwdriver between the top of the clip and the top of the shaft and lift it up enough to push the clip up and off. Then the dis-assembly and re-assembly was just like you show. Putting the clip back on was easy. Press the whole clip while pulling lightly down on the "J" channel. Mine clicked right into place. Took me about 20 minutes. Now that I know what I'm doing, should take about 10 minutes. The best part is my cruise control is now fixed!! Thanks again.
Thank you for the help!! I was have the same issue with cruise.
Thanks so much for the video. Your efforts are appreciated!!!
Super easy.. changed it out 5 minutes. great video an yah I got it on cruise control now..
This helps out a lot I have a 2010 chevy. O'Reilly couldn't get me a clear schematics on it.

Thank you SIR for showing that damn clip clearly !
Thanks for ur time, very helpful!
Great explanation!!! Here is my experience. Never mind, LSS. First. While up under the dash, depress the pedal, then release it. You should hear a slight click with each movement. The switch is meant to swivel slightly. If it doesn't move, use penetrating oil between the switch and let it soak. Then move the switch back and forth. When it begins moving freely, it should work. Save a lot of work, and is likely to be the problem.
Great assignment for your students. you doing it as well great example.
thanks for the video greatly appreciated going to work on it tommorow
