How to replace a 2012-2015 Tesla Model S Xenon Ballast and Bulb

In this video I will show you how to replace a Xenon ballast and headlight bulb on a Tesla Model S. I used a 7mm nut driver and a small flat head pocket screwdriver to perform this job.

How often must the actual ballast be replaced? 2014 Model S here and as of the past couple of months I have BOTH headlights malfunctioning periodically. They'll be fine for a few days and then 1 of them will randomly go out. Turning them off and then right back on always remedies the issue when it occurs. I bought 2 replacement bulbs and plan to replace them this weekend. Hadn't thought about replacing the ballasts as everything I've seen from researching the topic suggested it was simply the bulbs going bad. US car with the standard 35w ballasts here (as opposed to the euro cars that seemingly got hosed with the 25w version).

That's not an easy thing to answer. it's really depends on use, conditions, and hours. if you are in an area with high humidity/rain fall that might impact the lifespan of the parts. If you have high hours (drive a lot with the headlights on) that will shorten the lifespan. Since these are D3S bulbs with the ignitors built in and both are having problems. replacing the bulbs is a good place to start. If you are seeing both lights go on/off at the same time you might look further up stream as that's extremely uncommon to happen and might be a wiring/power problem. Normally people have problems with one side and not both and diagnosing can be as simple as moving a bulb from one headlight to the other and seeing if the problem travels with the bulb. then you know if you have a bulb or ballast problem.

@@gftgrill thanks for the reply!! It's never happened to both bulbs simultaneously. I guess my question should really have been.....what are the symptoms of a bad ballast? In my minds eye if the ballast were to go bad then that should be it for the light. No amount of turning it off and back on should make the light work. Or am I wrong on that and the symptoms of a bad ballast exhibit themselves in the same manner as a dying HID bulb? Regardless I'm changing both bulbs tomorrow morning. If the problem persists I'll buy 2 new ballasts and tackle that job next!

@@ferrynpalmer3875 there are a lot of similarities between a dying bulb and ballast. Dying bulbs will generally display themselves with diming light or a major color shift. With Xenon bulbs with built in ignitors it could be in the ignitor and not the "bulb". a bad capacitor in the ballast or the ignitor will most likely present similar conditions of the bulb turning off. cutting power to the system allows the power to be drained and turning it back on resets the system until the error condition presents itself again. At this point, the worst case situation is you end up with all new ballasts and bulbs and should be set for the next 10+ years.

Your bulbs are dying, especially if it happens same time. The chances of ballasts failing on both sides at the same time is very unlikely. Also no need to worry about the ballast really, they should usually last 15+ years

I do not have a video on it. You have to remove the front bumper first. then lift up the plastic trim piece above light. that will get you access to all 4 of the bolts holding it in place. remove the 4 bolts and disconnect the wire harness from the rear of the light. This is the same process on most vehicles.

@@gftgrill when you say front bumper, are you talking about the nose cone (for 2015 models)? or more than that?

found the answer to my own question, not just nose cone. Here's a video on newer models without nose cone: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oI6cucWej5W2lbw.html
