I like how you encourage not to look "perfect". Make's it a lot less daunting for someone with poor needle skills! May give this a go. Thanks!

Thank you Pammy!! Good observation! When you work with yarn, which is thicker and has friction, no need to tie a knot. With embroidery floss, thin and smooth, better tie a knot or it will easily come undone ☺️

Instead of tying knots, weaving in the ends a few times in different directions should work just as well so that the work doesn't come undone.

I have wondered if I could mend socks that are cotton or bamboo fibers as easily and as well as I can mend wool socks, and this video shows me that I can! I'm now excited to know that I can maybe never buy socks again, unless I need some to look pristine for some occasion. You've saved me so much money!

Wow. that was really a well done instructional video. And even went so far as including some entertainment value with the pics of the (blackberry) pie and sat on the couch to eat some! And we're doing something as mundane as fixing holes in socks! I give you alot of credit for your creativity and going the extra mile for creating a festive atmosphere. I have been sewing ripped clothing items my whole life, May God Bless my mother for teaching me how so long ago, and it saved me alot of money over the years, but I have never seen what you showed me was 'darning', before! I can see that it is a superior way to fix holes in socks, rather than just bring the two sides together like a sandwich. We know it really will only hold together for about two weeks using that method, then tear out in exactly the same place. But I don't think I have the time or patience to do the darning proper fix...I love youtube for all the things I have never seen before and can learn. Thank you for posting and communicating so well!

This is fantastic, I can’t wait to sit down and work through my own big ol’ Bag of Defective Socks™. 👀 I’ve been collecting them because I can’t bear to put something in the trash just for having one or two holes or threadbare spots on it. I strongly believe that mending skills is something that everybody-and I mean *everybody*-should develop. We are far too eager nowadays to throw our belongings away at the first sign of malfunction and aesthetic wear, when in many cases their lives could be extended by at least a little if we were just willing to dedicate some more thought and effort into problem-solving. And I resent that our society encourages this behaviour by promoting consumerism, and by producing products that are of progressively cheaper quality, which makes them quicker to break… 😥 Hopefully, videos like these will inspire a spirit of craftsmanship in people that will enable us as a society to shift to a more mindful use and management of our resources. 💪🏻

Hi, at 9:38 can you clarify what you meant by "the other side..."? The same sock inside out or perpendicular stitching with matching thread? Thank you!

Great video and funny! You got my like for the sign next to the pie :) I was wondering if any of the holes reappeared. I have a bunch of fun socks that have those toe holes, but I'm worried I'll fix it then a month later I'll get another hole next to the original because the fabric is thinning. I was thinking of just sewing a whole over piece over the entire toe, but I think that would be uncomfortable maybe. Any thoughts?

Eheh thanks! I like the idea of patching the tippy toe, I suggest using a stretchy fabric and sewing in a zig-zag, that way the seam will be elastic. After some time indeed socks become too thin or stretched out, in that case I put them into a textile recycling bin in my area. ☺️

This is very helpful thank you Ecoboutique I'm constantly throwing out my socks the moment they get holes in them & it always happens in the toe area.

What kind of needle is that - a regular sharp or a fine darning needle with a blunter tip so it doesn't split the yarn of the sock too much?

The second one ☺️ the semi-blunt tips are also ok with cotton, blunter better for ticker woolen yarns

Thank you for this. I was taught it as a child, but needed a reminder. I only have a question: why do you use embroidery thread for the first two and regular thread for the third? My instinct would have been to go for a wool or wool mix yarn.

Thank you for watching! For the darning I used embroidery floss because that matched the yarn of my socks best. That’s needed because you’re weaving a new piece of fabric with it. Since my socks were made of cotton, I used cotton yarn (2 to 4 strands of cotton embroidery floss). For stitching the hole close I used regular thread in matching color because I want it to be as invisible as possible. Not sure I was able to explain! Let me know if you have more questions :)

I was previously unsure why you used the embroidery yarn, but I am still incredulous that someone would go to all that effort to tear a length of embroidery yarn apart like that and use the pieces...Its hard for me to believe its that important to match the content of the fibers of your sock, but I DO BELIEVE YOU! @@ecoboutiquevalentina

@@dartellomega6573 Embroidery thread is intended to be pulled apart like this, so it’s actually very easy to do/doesn’t snarl as much as, say, separating yarn

I could easily afford to replace my socks but my mother always used to mend everything and that’s what I do. I guess that’s how I can easily afford stuff - by fixing stuff!

The problem is that these darns are so weak, he sock will wear down again, or develop a hole, very quickly..... So much work for just a few weeks more of wear...

Best to use a fine yarn, similar to the sock yarn, instead of sewing thread. Personally I don't mind if the colour matches.
