    Kind friend, you may have just saved a coleman lantern. I’ve been searching the interwaves for 2 days trying to discover why my newly replaced pump assembly refuses to pump. I can’t wait for sunrise! 👍 Update: Carb cleaner only and we have a working lantern! ❤️🖐

    I've got two check valves 2hich leak. One from a stove one from an older lantern. Tried soaking them both in vinegar all day and it made no difference other than cleaning them up nice on the outside. I already installed a new check valve in the stove and I have one on order for the lantern. I may try the tapping to re-set the ball idea. Like you said, there's nothing to lose at this point.

    I don't have the tool to deal with check valves, at least not yet so I am using repeated doses of Carb Cleaner to try fixing the check valve which is stuck in the closed position on a recently acquired 200. Air pump was expected to be dry, fixed that and I will have to do something about the fuel cap gasket. The lamp has been well used over the decades and I was not planning on a restoration, but with the time it might take to fix the check valve some partial disassembly for a citric acid soak or perhaps even an electrolysis tank for rust removal might now be in order. It won't be a museum quality restoration but I will aim for a significant rejuvenation of a venerable old lamp. Great series, I have watched a lot of the fixes and tips and tricks plus a lot of history from this channel.

    If the check valve is stuck in the closed position, you might try poking it with a stiff wire or bamboo skewer to free it up.

    @@king.coleman Tried that but it was stuck in the open position, already at the limit of it's movement. I did several days of carb cleaner and on day 2 it started to burp some bubbles. This was encouraging so I continuted this treatment along with installing the pump plunger and trying to force carb cleaner in to the air tube so it could work from both side. I finally elected to remove the main valve and filled the fount with hot vinegar to the brim. It would slowly work it's way through the check valve. When the plunger tube was full I topped it up with more warm vinegar. After sitting overnight, several rinses with 91% alcohol to remove traces of vinegar, I can actually hear the check valve ball moving when I gently shake the tank. Will reassemble tomorrow and give it a test burn if the fount holds its pressure. No obvious way to remove the fuel pick up tube, so it got a good hot vinegar soak, followed by alcohol bath.

    @@king.coleman Looks like my efforts were successful. Just reassembled everything and the tank holds pressure now. I have found some pump repair kits (half way across the city), so I will pick a few up and replace the pump leather a bit later. A test light later with fire extinguisher handy and with luck all goes well. Have you ever tried cold bluing bare steel lantern parts. I'm mulling the idea of doing the side supports and bottom plate to help prevent more rust. Not sure it will stand up to the heat.

    A 442 should use the standard check valve that Coleman has used in almost everything since the 1940s. There may be a different part number for the 442 if the new check valve includes an air stem, which is shorter than usual on that model. I expect, however, that your air stem is fine and that all you need is the check valve. If Coleman doesn't sell them in your country, check with Old Coleman Parts.

    King Coleman: I just bought the tool - works great, EXCEPT on one particular check valve from a 1957 200a. I swear the slot on its valve is too small for the tool. Have you ever come across this? I don’t want to file down the tool to make it fit, rendering it undersized from now on. And of course, that’s the lantern whose valve is faulty and the reason I bought the tool!

  • @king.coleman

    @king.coleman

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don't think the check valve itself is any different than others. Coleman used a single check valve on everything for decades, so it's not like someone accidentally installed the wrong part at the factory. The two most likely possibilities are (1) someone tried to remove it with a screwdriver and chewed it up or (2) the slot is filled with grease and debris. I've run into both and in either case, when you insert the removal tool, you should still feel when it lines up with the slot. Line it up, then tighten the nut. That should pull the tool into the slot on the check valve, whether that means squishing debris out of the way or pushing through soft, mangled brass. Even in the latter case, there's usually still enough metal for the tool to get a grip on. Good luck.

    Pretty cool video. A real problem and very common I have found is rust inside the fount, from severe to a light dusting of rust with no pitting. Have you addressed any founts with rust and what amount of rust will effect the operation of a lantern. I have a 220F that has never been used. It has a very light rusting inside of the fount. You have given me some great insight on how to trouble shoot my lantern. I have some concern, I have found a couple of things already. The cup on the pump is definitely going to need oiling and I had to back off the packing nut a 1/4 turn to get the fuel valve to open. I’m really leaning towards a complete disassembly before I ever use it. I’m concerned of fouling the air tube and check valve. I’ve really have 3 choices. Test the lantern, and if it passes use as it is. Disassemble the lantern check all parts and address the rust in the fount. Spend $55 dollars send it to Coleman and get it refurbished. First option is the laziness in me. The second option is what I probably should do. The third option is the easiest but not sure if Coleman would clean the inside of the fount. Any insight would be highly appreciated.

    A mild acid solution or commercial rust-remover (like Evaporust) is usually sufficient. If it's bad, I first dump some BBs in the fount and give a good shake for ten or fifteen minutes before rinsing and soaking in rust remover. If the fount is compromised, the BB shake will often reveal it. I always follow that up with a pressure test: fifty or sixty pumps and then a dunk in water to look for bubbles. If I'm really concerned, I'll pump it until it's too difficult to pump any more and let it sit overnight, then check for leaks.

    @@thegulagarchipelago5921 WD-40 isn't a rust remover. I assume it's the walls of the pump tube that are rusty. If that's the case, I'd pour in some white vinegar and let it sit for a couple of hours. That will break down the rust. Rinse it out, then use a bore brush or some fine sandpaper wrapped around a dowel to smooth it out if necessary.

    Check valve is clear and working as it should, new leather seal but still leaking. Is it a good idea to spray carb cleaner with check valve removed into the tube where the valve goes?

  • @king.coleman

    @king.coleman

    2 жыл бұрын

    It won't hurt anything, but it won't do anything to fix your problem. You say that the check valve is working, so you'll probably want to do a dunk test to determine where the leak is. Pump it up, dunk it in some water, and look for bubbles. The usual culprit is the fuel cap gasket, but the valve can also leak if the stem isn't seating properly. If you recently removed the valve from the fount, it's possible it may be leaking at the bung. You could have a compromised fount. Or the check valve may not be working after all. The bubbles will tell you where the problem is. If you don't want to go straight to the dunk test, try swapping the fuel cap with a known-good cap and see if it holds pressure.

  • @mikegalate5182

    Fuel cap gasket was replaced. The fount will not hold pressure at all. What goes in, comes out immediately. I swapped the check valve, the pump and all to another lantern and no problems there. So It leads be to believe its in the fount itself. What say you?
