This works fine, I have done that before. However if the outer plastic got so brittle after a few years it’s likely to break again soon at the spot where the heat shrink ends. So it’s really just a fix for a while.

Great idea I've done this before too. Should have wrapped it with a twist tie first to reduce the chances of it happening again. You can still wrap it with a twist tie even after the heat shrink tubing has been applied.
