www.podcastfasttrack.com - Many people on Apple OS have had a hard time finding the plugins mentioned in this video. For both the Inverter plugin and the LS Filter plugin, the creator is named Steve and can be reached here (according to the "about" section on the plugin) steve (@) plugin (dot) org (dot) uk - contact him to see if he has an OS version.
www.FreeAudacityTutorials.com - You can take most of the vocals out of your stereo track AND keep the low end strong so that the track doesn't sound hollow. Most tutorials won't show you my "secret sauce" second step. Check it out!

Honestly, this was the most useful tutorial i`ve ever seen in my life. Congratulations.
Hey man I've been to hell and back this whole day trying to do this IT stuff, glad I found your tutorial
Even though I had an older version of audacity, I was still able to reproduce your instructions. Thanks! That was very clear and easy to follow!
Yes, you can do that (possibly... it depends on how it was mixed in the first place). Highlight the portion where you want to remove vocals using the selection tool. Then follow the procedure as the video shows. Each time you have to select audio, you'll have to select just the portion you're working on again.
I was struggling to do the song coz I was rushing everything. After I slowly listened to the instructional video, it was a success!!! Great video!!!
Awesome.. your instructions was the closest i could get to remove the vocal from song. I was at the edge of giving up.I'm so glad I found your video. Many Many Thanks for sharing this information
Carey: As a musician for most of my life besides owning a successful plumbing and heating company, Ive been doing solo gigw for over 20 years. Many times, songs I love just arent available in karaoke...have tried a ton of vocal removal programs but none really seemed to do any justice on hiding the vocals. I downloaded Audacity and ran across this video today and was amazed at more of the things you can do to really make the song credible. I applaud your efforts and now I can comfortably say that there is no song that I will not be able to play and sing... Thanks...tons... MikeF....Pittsburgh...formerly of upstate New York
This totally fixed that half-sound problem when I was trying to make the song instrumental. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
You made a world of difference my friend. Thank you so much for this tutorial! You rock!
thanks, it worked after copying the plugins into the plugins folder. but one thing I noticed that if you play the track once and keep it in the paused state, the effects are greyed out too. so you have to press the stop button at least once to avoid this. :)
What a great explanation and video, Carey. Really appreciate it. Thanks so much for posting!!
This tutorial is great and useful, just what i was looking for! And that second step of keeping the low pass is quite simple, but how effective! I'm amazed lol xD
Subscribed! Also in the song I have, there's a part that goes loud, and now I can hear guitar, I couldn't hear it before. Thanks man!
wow Carey!! Amazing tutorial. You are a genius. What I really liked 1. You secret sauce of using low pass filter 2. The clarity with which you presented the tutorial was AWESOME, only and american can give such CRYSTAL CLEAR directions.

+Sumit Mathur - You are kind. I'm glad it helped!
and that is at least honest, unlike in all those tuts they keep saying you do not hear anything while you clearly do. Good job.
Hey man this was really helpful thanks.
Nice video. I am about years late on this but audacity came with this unit I purchase to I am trying to learn it. As a side note I wanted to mention if you have not heard it many time already, BP filter is a Band Pass filter which will pass a narrow frequency range of sound instead of just the Highs or the Lows.
You can use the equalizer to 'knock out' all high frequencies. You will find it under the effects pull down, and it does the same thing. You will see it has a line, just click along the line to make a split in the cut/boost, slide the high freq down to 0 from about 150ish hertz, this only allows freq below 150 to pass through. If you boost the bass, be careful not to go crazy high, because you may overload the bass and damage your speakers with all that bass, so try your track on low volume 1st
Yes, you will often still have the backing vocals present even using this method. Sounds like you did it right.
I just wanted to thank you for this because I needed this for my music GCSE course because our teacher's said to start off the year we're gonna preform in front of the class and we need a backing track so thank you so much :)

Hi FAT, I'm using your techniques now, in January and it works in The latest version of Audacity .....THX.......
Finally a proper explanation, well done and thanks.
Works much better than most ways. Thanks!
Great tutorial! I got sick of all the tutorials saying "Split to Track, Invert, and set to mono! You're all good, thanks for getting this site views btw!" Ugh, they made my music sound bad and the vocals were still there for the most part. Then I found this awesome tutorial, and while the vocals are slightly still there (product of the song I'm working with), it sounds near perfect! Thanks! Also, since you said you were a believer, look up "I Celebrate the Day" by Relient K. I'm making a Karaoke track of me singing the song for my family this holiday.
BP= Band pass. It filters or allows frequencies between two variable points. Think of it as a window, to the left it blocks light (bass) and to the right it blocks light (High freq) but the window (the band) allows those frequencies through. Metaphorically, you can select how wide the window, allowing a broader amount of frequency and you can select how far towards the bass or treble you position the 'window'. You can sometimes select for the band to allow or block certain frequencies.
I'm going to try this, if it works this good, you're a GENIOUS!
Awesome tutorial presentation. It actually works quite nicely! Thank you!!!

I have Acoustica Mixcraft but watching some of the other programs tutorials is helping me understand what extra little dealios I can possibly do to make a better end product. Thanks much! Blessings! Gracias y Que Dios lo bendiga hermano
BP stands for band-pass filter, which removes both the extreme low and high end, and leaves the midrange, or middle band of requencies
Thanks! Great tutorial! The songs I have are softer music with really loud vocals, so getting them down is difficult (impossible), but it is considerably better, and just fine for kids doing karaoke in the basement. Thanks also for the plugin links. They were super easy to install... even for this old granny. :) I have to wonder if some of the people responding negatively are actually following instructions exactly... Thanks again!
This is by far the best and easiest method and tutorial you just got your self a subscriber

eurica! thanks Carey all is working now, all those effect plug ins sure make a difference
Hey, I loved the FUNK you played in this vid.
I THINK THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL FOR US COVER SINGERS! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING THIS!!!!
The effect of flipping one of the channel is to cancel out the middle of the stereo field, since the middle has equal amplitude in both channels. This means that this method only works when the vocals are centered in the mix, which they usually are. The problem is that the bass is also usually center panned. You can sometimes get this effect in your headphones when the plug is not inserted properly, which means that both ears get a mono signal resulting from a short circuit between the two channels, and a short circuit cancels out the common signal which means you get a the same result as inverting one and adding them. Just wanted to give some more theoretical background as to how this works ;-)
This really helped me a lot, THANK YOU!!
thanks very much
Thanks for an excellent tutorial. But after selecting one of the mono track when I click the effect drop down menu, the options are not highlighted. Is there anything I might be missing? I'm on a mac BTW.
When I downloaded my version it came with all the plugins. I'm not sure why yours wouldn't have them. You can go to the plugins page on my website and find some of them. I'm working on getting the rest uploaded. Thanks.
Thanks! This worked perfectly!
really helpful tutorials. Thanks for your effort
well done sir you solved my problem really very helpful I would remove and the sound quality wouldn't be the same as before but with the low pass option is now better thank you so much.
Very nice explanation, thanks. I will check your site for the plugins :)
Thank you for this tutorial. Even if the result did not turn out as good as I wanted, it is a very useful help nevertheless!
Thanks for the tutorial, worked with my project
thanks for the vid, works alright, doesnt really work with heavy metal though. any suggestions?
Happy to help!
Oh thanks! Split Tracks is coolest thing I've ever found!
Thanks! It sounds like im hearing it through a broken microphone!
This is excellent! Thanks for posting this! I have a question. I have a bunch of PowerPoint audio files I need to clean up and I need to create more audio files. If I do this to one audio file, does Audacity store those settings somehow and apply them to new audio files I create? It seems to be doing that but I'm not sure.
Worked really well for my purposes, thanks so much for this!

Thank you so much for your tutorial and for your faith. This is a great tool for worship music.
For the record, LP allows frequencies in the low range of the audio spectrum. Hence Low Pass filter. HP only allows high frequencies hence high pass filter. BP stands for Band Pass filter and what that does is you pick two frequencies and it only allows frequencies within that range to pass through it. Everything else on either side of those frequencies is muted out.
Thanks for the great tip! Any chance you can create your videos in higher resolution beyond 480p? I like to watch full screen to view the details on the screen but at 480pm its gets pretty blurry. Otherwise keep up the great work!
It didnt work fully but i messed around with it and i finally worked a solution to which you can still here a bit of vocal but only if your really trying to hear it.
Awesome video, dude! Your secret sauce is the thing!! I'm going to try it and let you know!

+Isaac Asante Thanks... I'd love to hear how it works for you.
This needs more views.
On the scrolling function, it doesn't work with the scroll wheel on a mouse, only by using the arrows at the top and bottom of the effects drop-down window. Regarding your "missing effects" - when I downloaded my 2.0.2 version, it had all the plugins I have now, so I don't know why yours wouldn't have the same ones. BUT, you can find out more about the various kinds of effects (see the Audacity manual about the effects menu) which may require you to download some new ones.
Hey DJ Koira... go the the website (in the description above) and check the instructions at the bottom of the main page under the RED heading... try it out and let me know if it works for you!
You get that nice studio sound.
My problem is when I use invert, the entire song goes mute.
@nickcfilms

If you have one track normal and the exact same track inverted playing at the same time, the sound waves will get cancelled out leaving you with just silence.
works okay on tracks where you have vocals with no effects applied. you can still hear a low quality version of the vocals, but it's decent. thanks.
Thank you mate. It worked for me. A BIG Thumbs up! :)
Newest version Audacity: Scroll all the way down under effects. Have the track set to Stereo!!! Then click the tool Vocal remover. Select entire spectrun and press go. It does a great job but then you fix the bottom notes.

Chrisfm94TV you either need to press the giant square button or the stop button not the pause button, or you dont have the track highlighted. Try to select the part of the track by dragging and clicking the left mouse button. The selected track should be noticeable. Once you do that, then the menus will not be grayed out and you can use them.

All i hear is squeaking when i do this, can you be more specific?
Thank you so much for your clear help! Maranatha!
Perfect,clear,and u r a good guy.god bless you thanks my friend.it works.
I tried using this method for censoring, didn't work exactly that well because by making the stereo track into two mono tracks, I would generate silence wherever there wasn't cuss words, which actually greatly depleted the quality. So for censoring songs, instead of splitting it into two mono tracks, I kept it together as a stereo track, copied the track under it, and generated silence over the cuss words in the main track, and in the duplicate track I cut out everything but the cuss words and used the LS Filter. It actually worked pretty okay. Thanks for the tutorial!

I have a PC and both the 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 versions and neither seem to have the "Inverter" plug in - it's still not there. I've scoured the site, too. Help! :(

No LS Filter, either. Downloading from the site didn't seem to add these?
I'm currently using 2.0.3 - the video above was done on an earlier version though (I think)... hard to know when the videos were made in relation to the changes with Audacity.
THE BEST VIDEO I WATCH
wao great,,vocal had change after that,,amazing,,,,,,,,,now its louder then before
great tutorial, really helped alot! Thanks!
It would depend on what the foreign audio is. A hum, maybe. Voices in the background - not likely. It's all about frequencies and most mixes "mix" the frequencies so you can't undo them.
Thank you for this! I can now make tracks for my worship music. God bless!
Cool! I'm not looking to do this, but I like your way of going about it!
Thanks for this method. How do you export it please? 4 tracks, which one goes to which channel? No matter what combination I do the vocals either come back in, or there’s no bottom end. Thanks
Thanks for sharing that... very helpful!
could you please write the link for the latest audacity, and how to get all the additional affects thank you
two thumbs up! This is really cool and easy!
hi , nice demo now I new something different, I am new here to use audacity can you tell me how can I convert mp3 to midi file and where to save and play with my piano keyboard? thank you.
thanks… its very helpful, nice work
Happy to help... contact me through my website (link is in the video description).
Thanks for tutorial.BP = Band Pass Filter
How did you access LS Filter and Inverter? I looked on the audacity website where you can download additional plug-ins, but none of the downloads available contained inverter. (I didnt look for LS Filter).
The sec invert is not on my version of audacity so what one works really well.
I assume you're talking about the song I did the inversion on? I don't know what it was... it was a song that was available on the internet for free and allowed me to do this through Creative Commons rights.
Good video. You know if it's possible to remove reverb from mono and stereo. Also what about bringing forward an artists vocal so it stands out more when other singers are singing ?
@CareyGreen
10 жыл бұрын
Hey tenniscollector - if the reverb is in a track that is already mixed down into one track, you're out of luck. There may be some effects that could minimize the reverb, but not likely and not very effectively. It's like trying to remove the flour from a cake. Boosting the vocals is possible to some extent using the equalizer (EQ). I've yet to do a video on EQ stuff, but you should be able to find a good one on YT. Hope that helps!
You can look on my website - there is a download page where you might find these.
Note: BP stands for band pass filter. It passes frequency within some band.
Great video how do i get the inverter in audacity i havent seen it ? i downloaded all the packages
Im having an issue where no matter how I set the Low Pass Filter the vocals always still come through with clairty.
Thanks for the solution. God Bless Your Job . My Bro.
BP filter means band-pass filter, meaning you specify the band of frequencies to pass through.
Does the track lose quality when you convert it to audio again with no vocals? BTW great video! thanks
It worked partly for me. It had most of the instrumental edited out well but you could still hear the vocals in the background.
thanks mate really helpful :)
Damn thank you very much, it worked (almost) perfectly! Especially where the music is very loud the vocals completely disappear.
