How to Remove the Hard Drive from an Amazon Fire TV Recast and Use It with a Tablo DVR

The Amazon Fire TV Recast is a broadcast TV DVR. In August, Amazon announced that it would be discontinued. It should continue to work for a while, but if yours has stopped working, here's how to salvage the hard drive and use it with any computer or a Tablo DVR.
My blog post on the Amazon Fire TV Recast being discontinued:

I´d love to see an updated video one with the Tablo 4th Gen

Here are my Tablo Gen 4 videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/goGnwdtml8vPf8Y.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKmJqLOqc6uqdJM.html
You need to edit this video to add the fact that the screws to be removed are NOIT Phillips or flat screws. they have a fluted hex head. Actual size is a T8. sThat is the ONLY tool that will work. Second, there are NO screws holding the fan in place. It is secured by four rubber posts that are conical in shape and just pull thru with tension. Lastly, before you can remove the electronics from the case, you must remove the nut holding the cable connector to the box. Those are really important to anyone who has never disassembled this device. otherwise, it's pretty good.
This is going to sound crazy. But I literally thought it was my handwriting on the hard drive. Lol

Typical American handwriting. 🤣🤣
I'm glad I found your video, but not for removing the HDD from the Recast. I am starting to have a problem where mine will initially connect to my wifi network, but the next time I want to watch TV, it has lost the connection. I am wondering if you are able to identify the Wifi adapter on the motherboard of the Recast, and let me know if it appears to not be too difficult to remove, (I am pretty adept at soldering, and working on electronic devices) so I can try to find a replacement to put back in it's place. I know I can get the TIVO, Tablo, or some other OTA DVR, but I really don't like paying a monthly subscription fee in order to get the channel guide, etc.

Hi @motorjock0478, I still have the motherboard but most of the chips are completely enclosed by RF shields that are soldered to the board, so it's not easy to see what chips they are. I'd be glad to send it to you if you want to send me a shipping label. - Brian

@@BrianShim I appreciate the offer, but rather than trying to fix the wifi, I just moved my Recast unit into the room where my router is located, and plugged-in an ethernet cable. So far that seems to be working. I really hate that Amazon decided to discontinue this device. It is the best I have found for easy setup and seamless integration, as well as providing a free channel guide. I watched your video on the 5 best OTA DVR devices, and if the Recast stops working all together, I will purchase the AirTV anywhere device. It seems to be the next best available choice, for now.

@@motorjock0478 Glad you got it to work using Ethernet. Yeah, the Recast is great. AirTV and Tablo are the next best, depending on what you need. Thanks for the update! - Brian
Could you recover the recordings on you recast hard drive?

I didn't try since I didn't have any recordings on it at the time.
Recast is a superior product. I purchased the new 4 tuner Tablo and the picture freezes all the time. No way to fix it.

Are you using the Tablo with Roku? They're is supposed to be a firmware fix for the freezing issue. Or try on Fire TV if not doing that already.
So he touches all the static sensitive components without a wrist strap !

That's right, because the circuit boards are of no use. I plan to recycle them.
