How to: Remove the Bed on 1980 Toyota Pickup

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I remove the bed from the 1980 Toyota Long Bed parts truck, as well as the transmission, and fuel lines. Next time I'll be cleaning the frame and getting it ready for paint. I'm using a homemade hoist with a harbor freight winch mounted at the top. It was a little sketchy, but I lived.

    Your white bed maybe this lastest model 80. I owned an 81 SR5 4x4. It was white w/two toned stripes drk brown/light brown. That blue on yours was another option. Already sub'd/gave u a 👍. This is near & dear to me so looking forward to more videos!

    Thanks! While the truck wasn't an SR5, it was highly optioned with AC and a 5 speed, so that night explain the modern style logo on the tailgate.

    Today, I found out the R151F is a pretty old gearbox, not that I thought it was new by any means. My Dad's 2010 70 series Land Cruiser has a R151F gearbox, definitely an old school gearbox and not very refined. Also, the revs are a bit high in 5th gear on the highway. The gearbox is not that desirable for Cruiser fans; we don't have a lot of these pickups still kicking around. I think the one people want for Turbo diesel applications is the H151F or something like that. I really enjoy this series. When a new video comes out, I watch it as soon as possible.

    the reason for the different fonts on the tailgate is because Toyota used to ship trucks without beds to the US and they had the beds made in the US. The old style font is a Japanese made bed and the modern font is a USA made bed.

    Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know, and why I don't see many with the old style font. I'll try to save the blue tailgate then. I really like the Japanese style.

    Your Logo on the 2 tailgates, if I had to guess, the white one is a more modern truck (newer), the blue one is the older style. Both pick up trucks are CBU's (complete built units from JAPAN), the lip and the 2 latch tailgate is a easy give away! All Toyota pickup beds which do NOT have the outer lip were built here in the USA. And thus the cab and the frame were shipped to America and then the bed was installed at the Long Beach Port of entry.

    Could just the door latch be from an earlier model I currently have to 78 Toyo Po up’s sitting in the driveway and they have that old logo font style with dual latch never seen single latch

    Just looked at the back of mine and looks just like the blue one both are long bed one is sr5 but the door looks identical. Since it’s an 80 I can see a late 80s door fitting it since the transition was done is 78

    The tailgate logo was the difference between the long bed standard and the long bed deluxe models. Various other trim differences. Did the blue truck have round headlights or rectangular like the white truck?

    I believe there are 3 tailgate variants, old logo with 2 latches, new logo with 2 latches and new logo with single latch. I had a 79 long bed 5 speed with a 20r and it had the new logo with side latches and I currently have an 81 sr5 with a single latch and new logo. I believe the beds and tailgates are different depending on the latch styles.

    That makes sense, since this was a higher trim level with AC and the optional 5 speed, although it was not an SR5. Both trucks have the round headlights. To my knowledge, the square ones were not used until 1982.

    Not understanding some of your procedure here. I'm 75, and last year tore two 2500 Rams completely down to the frames in order to convert my 01 Cummins 5 speed to 4WD, which requires a diesel or V10 4x4 frame. WHY DID YOU waste a lot of time and energy pulling the rear shaft when you could have don that AFTER you pulled the box?

  • @6thGearGarage

    @6thGearGarage

    I disconnected & pulled the 2-piece driveshaft first so it wouldn't be flopping around and dragging on the concrete as I'm rolling the frame around the garage.

    Cool project. I took your advice and called the Stealership for bushings and bolts to put the cab on my chassis...only $188.65 for the 6 sets of bits....lol Kinda gotta roll that around a lil. Are 4x4 bushings the same ya think? I can do aftermarket poly for about $90...for a 4x4.

  • @6thGearGarage

    @6thGearGarage

    I can’t say for sure but I would think 4x4 cab and bed bushings would be the same as 2wd, since the cabs and beds were identical.

    @@6thGearGarage I'm hoping so. I kinda wanted regular old rubber mounts, but I can get black poly ones, and its WAY cheaper. I'll probably go that route.

    Holy wow...I just reread the quote for the cab bolts and bushings...the $188 was JUST for the two bolts in the core support....😬
