Can you make a video showing how to clean the carbon build up on the intake valves 2013 Elantra 1.8

  • @TheTexican05

Believe it or not, this video covers 80% of the work. Getting the intake on and off is the worst part on most motors to do a carbon cleaning on a DI motor. The rest is as follows: 1) With the intake removed, rotate engine by hand using correct socket and breaker bar until cylinder 1 is @ TDC (meaning all valves on all cylinders should be closed). Use a flashlight and watch the valves open and close if you aren't sure. You can also do the screwdriver trick on cylinder 1 to find TDC (google this for more clarity) 2) You want to clean the valves and intake runners while the valves are closed, and remove the debris with compressed air to blow it back out of the intake runners, preventing any solid chunks, dirt, lint etc from having a chance to fall into the combustion chamber of the engine. 3) Different cleaning agents have different levels of effectiveness. Soaking is highly recommended. CRC makes some great cleaning agents for this. Normal, over the counter low-VOC brake cleaner also does well for half the carbon cleanings out there. 4) Let it soak for at least 30 minutes, longer if possible. Use low pressure compressed air (the keyboard cleaner cans work well for this) to extract the excess fluid, or suck it out with a MityVac handheld vacuum pump. 5) On a badly neglected engine where the carbon cleaning never got done, or the car wasn't taken to top tier fuel stations with proper detergents in the fuel, it's not uncommon to have to use a series of pick tools and scrape that carbon off like a dentist working on a meth addict's mouth. 6) Do what is necessary to remove the debris. Wear safety goggles. Don't let chemicals get on your paint or nice clothes. 7) Once the valves and runners are clean to your satisfaction, replace the intake manifold gasket and reinstall everything you removed. 8) There will still be carbon buildup on the pistons. You can use CRC's GDI induction clean product for ~$15/can to address this. You can also "soak" the cylinders with a cleaning agent while the engine is apart and not running (if you truly understand engines and know what you're doing) If you aren't comfortable with the above, don't touch your car. Take it to the professionals. It will be cheaper with less downtime and frustration for you. Posting this reply in case it helps other folks who are considering taking this project on for their DI engine (VW, Hyundai, GM, etc). Good luck! 🍺🍻😎

I have a question about the gaskets. My car, a 2015 1.6 turbo sonata, only had gaskets around the valve intakes, no gaskets at the little ports in between. It came this way from the factory and always ran fine until a fuel injector went bad. What are those small square ports for?

I got a 2015. Removing the original air box is not that easy guys. You have to remove the front left tire to get access to some bolts. And you need a good socket kit with extensions. BTW could someone tell me if the throttle body gets decalibrated when you disconect it. I'm planning on cleaning it but got a lot of different opinions.

If the gaskets are silicone you probably do not need to replace them every time (just clean the surfaces well). But it they are plastic, you may or may not be able to get away without replacing them (depending on their ductility). Realistically though, if the gaskets for the manifold and throttlebody are

Obviously not advised, but I was short cash replaced my starter after taking the intake manifold off and it drove 2400 miles from Ohio too San Diego. Obviously replace the head gasket, but if you can't don't let it stop you from getting the job done
