How To Remove & Install Mini-z Motor, Pinion, & Motor Mounts MA-020s AWD

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Spotlighting how to properly remove your motor, pinion gear, & motor mounts from the MA-020 platform. I’m working on a full disassembly video for the ma-020, but I wanted to stop & give more details on the motor area since I have been receiving a lot of questions & requests to make a video on this subject.
It’s a very simple & straightforward process, but it can be daunting for beginners since it does involve wires & gear mesh, but have no fear. I cover everything in this video, & if you have any further questions, please leave them down in the comments and I will do my best to respond.

    KZreads new video preview on hover over makes this video look really exciting The trick for the motor mount is to insert a flat blade screwdriver into the vent facing forward and use it like a crowbar to lever the heatsink off. this works on this model of heatsinks and the more aggressive ones

    The different motor mounts affect gear mesh, if you changes the gear on the drive shaft or pinion then you may need to pick a different set of mounting blocks. one of the easiest ways to tell if you have done it wrong is a 'cogging' feeling (too tight) or excessive noise (too loose)

    hey man i had a quesion, my mini z awd drifter is going backwards when pressing the throttle now i did realise that my red wire is in the place where on your motor the black wire is supposed to be, so does thst mean my red and black wires are reversed? if so then can i just solder them correctly without damaging the motor?

    Hey, thank you for the content and great information. Can you help me out? Once I put the car back together, it seems to bind up or something. It’s too tight for the motor to turn. How can I fix?

    First thing to double check is that you installed the proper pinion gear & corresponding pinion gear. Then double check you have the rear end on the proper wheel base holes. Last would be to double check that you installed all the bearings & everything is aligned properly. Let me know if that helps. We can dig further in if needed.

    With regards to motor mounts, what is the difference between the different motor mounts I see online. A1B1, A2B2, A3B3 what are the differences in these and which would i need with a stock MA-020?

    The different motor mounts correspond to the gear ratio (so you get a perfect gear mesh), I beige the stock gears correspond to A1B1 but you would have to check the manual to confirm

    @@BMR3 thank you so much for the reply. I appreciate all the work you have put into these videos. I just went down the mini z rabbit hole a couple days ago but I have already watched through your whole backlog of videos to gain the knowledge I need to purchase. I'm working on building a cart of parts now and have already bought the Miata body I want.

    Hey! I think about getting a Kyosho Mini Z MA-020 RX7 and wanted to ask you whether the overheating of the motor really is that much of a problem. If so, does the heatsink really do a lot? I also thought about getting a MA-030 Evo Readyset. Does the brushless motor overheat as well or isn't that a problem at all? Is it worth getting it over the normal MA-020 for just casual driving and drifting in my living room? Btw, I'm a beginner (this would be my first Mini Z). Thank you very much!

    Bernd Weber Hey Brend, the smarter option would be to get the ma-020 and see how much you enjoy mini-z and indoor drifting. The 020 has a brushed motor & mine was running crazy hot just after a few minutes of drifting. But after I installed the heat sink mounts & aluminum clip, I didn’t notice the motor getting nearly as hot. I don’t own a heat gun, so I can’t confirm how much it helps, but I do think it’s a good idea & will help the motor last longer. If you want to jump headfirst into the hobby & can afford the MA-030Evo I 100% recommend going with this car, even if you only use it casually. Just know that it’s a very high entry point & there no “readysets” for the 030Evo so you will have to build a kit. I have a video on everything you will need but to recap, you need a 030Evo chassis, transmitter (I recommend the KT432pt), matching receiver board, a body, rims, drift tiers, & metal wheel nuts. The 030Evo has better balance & the brushless motor runs way cooler. I also noticed the run time for my 030Evo is 1-2 longer then the 020, I think it’s due to the brushless motor being more efficient. The 03evo comes with a 9000kv motor, but if you dropped it down to the 4100kv kyosho just released, it would run even cooler and be more efficient. I’m going to get a 4100kv motor when I find it in stock, and I’ll make a video about it. It’s up to you & how much you want to spend. The 020 is a great car, but the Evo is a tier above.

    @@BMR3 Thank you very much for the quick reply! Do you think the 4100kv motor will come out before Christmas? And is it "difficult" to set up the MA-030 Evo (Building and binding + fitting the body)? Edit: saw your video, binding is really easy! What is actually the difference between the 4100 kv and 8500 kv motor? How long can you drift with one set of batteries? Thanks again!

  • @BMR3

    @BMR3

    @@ThatGuy_0815 HA I was just copying the URL for the binding video to link you to it lol but Im glad you found it! Yeah the process is super simple, you dont actually have to "build" the car, more pop a couple parts in place and its done. Yes the 4100kv motors are out now, Kenon hobby had them, but it looks like they sold out same day lol The 8500KV motor is suited for racing & high RPM, where as the 4100KV will perform better at low RPM. Its not that the 8500kv cant run low rpm, it will just be less efficient & produce more heat than a 4100kv motor performing in the same low RPM range (& drifting is typically very low RPM). As far as battery life/run time, it really varies for each driver & your individual driving style. Typically you will get at least 5-6min of run time with a brushed ma-020, it could be more, could be less depending on how hard you punch the throttle. I noticed with my MA-030 im getting about 8-10 min of run time with the same batteries (but im very delicate with the throttle). Im still very much learning, so I typically "throttle lock" my car at the very lowest speed it will break lose at, and then use steering to guide the car. When I do this I will get easy 8-10 min with my 030Evo, but if im not throttle locked, and instead hammering the car and really punching the throttle, the 030Evo will still get me 7-8min of solid power, then it tapers off quickly.

    Bernd Weber I recommend the KT432PT controller, it’s the one I’m using and I love it. You can get a receiver board that’s compatible with the KT18 controller (stock one your talking about) but people using those have reported a lot of issue with steering. If your going to get a EVO, it’s best to get a quality controller like the KT432pt, I haven’t had any issue using mine. That’s why I was saying it’s a high point of entry for the evo, since you really need to get a quality controller that cost as much, if not more then the chassis. Then on top of that, you will need to get a receiver board, body, wheels & rims. So the price adds up quickly. Another controller you can look into is the FlySky Nobel, it’s a really good controller & slightly cheeper then the KT432PT. But I prefer the KT432PT since it’s compatible with any FHS or FHSS frequency mini-z cars. So it’s more versatile then the FlySky. As far as bodies, I’m using the Skyline R32 shell and it works great for the 94mm configuration. But honestly you might just want to go with a MA-020 for your first car & a KT432PT to go with it if you have the cash. The Kt432pt is a huge upgrade for a 020 & you can use it for a ma-030Evo in the future if you still want to get one.

I believe the chassis will come stock with the narrow configuration & 94mm wheel base. But overall 90% of the bodies will fit the 020 chassis, what bodies can’t you fit? Thank you for the kind words by the way! My I ask what criteria makes for a good mini-z channel?
