Here's our guide to removing and replacing your press fit bottom bracket. Bottom brackets like the BB86 and BB30 are increasingly common on high end carbon fiber road bikes - especially those made after 2010. While press fit bottom brackets may need a few more tools to work on, they are not too difficult. With the right tools, you'll be able to replace your bottom bracket quickly and efficiently without damaging your expensive carbon fiber frame.
The tools that you will need:
- A bearing press
- Park BBT-90 or Bottom Bracket Bearing Drift

After a couple of bottom bracket repair attempts, I developed a simple three step process for dealing with BBs across all of my bikes: 1. Take to bike shop 2. Take out wallet when done 3. Take bike home to ride I have found that it was quicker and cheaper than any other approach I've tried.

That bearing press is $150-170, while the cheaper version (HHP-3) is the same as homemade ones using a bar of threaded rod and press cups you can buy for a couple bucks. As someone who has done the press and remove, a number of times, the expensive press is a 1000x better, than the cheap one, but pricey enough to make taking your bike to your local shop a value proposition.

Wheels manufacturing has a thread together bottom bracket for BB86. Their instructions say to never to press in the bottom bracket dry but rather to use Teflon grease on a carbon frame. By the way, this is a very nice BB and usually solves any creaking problem!

I recently purchased a BMC SLR01. It came stock with Ultegra. After a few rides, the chain was making a lot of noise as it went through the front derailleur. I had a professional mechanic who set up the front derailleur correctly. My pedaling felt very sluggish, and wore me down after a mere 12 mile or riding it. A far as I can tell, it comes with press in cups, like the ones you showed where you use the tool to press them in. I took it back to the shop where I got it, and they said the crank needed to come off. I heard them whacking away at the bottom bracket - which leads me to believe they removed them and put them back in. You specifically stated after removing them, they are not really made to re-use. I think they out them back i after removing. Now the pedaling feels even MORE sluggish, and the chain is making even more noise as it goes round the crank and through the front derailleur. :(

Great video Si! Consider the Enduro BBT-003 BB tool for BB86 for removal as you don't have to use a hammer to hit the cup out (ouch!). You might scuff up the inside of the bracket (although cosmetic) or likely jack something up as you inevitably will not hold the frame steady while you pound away. Just my $.02 worth.

How to establish you have a press fit bottom bracket: Pedal your bike lightly up and down the road, if you hear a horrible squeak/creak that would almost 'push you over the edge' should this sound have to be endured for anything longer than about 2 seconds, you know you definitely have a press fit bottom bracket

All it means is that you have a PF BB... some squeak more than other but they all do (or eventually do). You can always temporarily fix the problem but the cost of replacing BB's every time they squeak plus the work time to replace them soon adds up. If you want a permanent (or more lasting solution) get a converter to external cups and use a BSA compatible crankset.... there is a reason the highest end of shimano still uses BSA cranks they work, they last a lot longer without causing problems, they are much much easier to service and the spindle diameter doesnt really compromise stiffness the way the market wants you to think (In fact all pinarello bikes have threaded BB shells and it doesnt seem to be slowing anyone on team sky down)

If there is a better cycling channel on the Internet, I haven't found it yet. Si always makes a visit here informative, interesting, and usually a bonus laugh in there somewhere. As to my question, do I risk damaging my semi-expensive frame (even once in a lifetime), or do I just pay my LBS to change the BB for me as needed? How expensive can paying a pro to do it be compared to buying the tools to do it myself and maybe making a costly mistake?

What a joke! In the machinery repair world we use cylindrical ( green loctite)retaining compound or epoxy, JB Weld to repair loose worn out bearings! Its merely to save money instead of replacing the damaged part to effect a proper repair. Its just a bandaid! THIS on a bike thats costs how much??? Dont drink the koolaid!! Do a little research on bearing fit and tolerances!Buy bikes with threaded BBs. You can thank me in a couple years.

PF BB hack! RJ the Bike Guy built one out of a threaded hex bolt, four machine washers, a hex nut and two wrenches. Total cost abt $10 - not counting the cost of the wrenches - which y'all should have anyway! if you are worried about scratching your frame, add in two felt pads or rubber machine gaskets - one at either end facing your bearings and add another buck or so to the total build cost.

  • @fernandoroman6494
    @fernandoroman64947 жыл бұрын

Thats advise on how to recon PF BB vs Threaded cups is a bit too simple and one has to be more careful than that. Some bike with PF shells will come with adapters or converters to fit shimano or house-brand cranksets (Fuji does this a lot). Some of those converters have the engagements for the tool to thread and unthread the cups yet they cannot be threaded and if tried you will likely ruin your BB or your frame :( (praxis conversion BB's are an example of those)

It's probably a good idea to use stainless bearings where possible, carbon (especially raw carbon exposed in bearing cups) is conductive and there is the possibility of galvanic corrosion.

It's incredibly easy to install PF BB, i've done it on 2 bikes in a few minutes. One was a sleeve going into another sleeve, and the other was PF, but with a screw interace in the middle of the BB. Used that big turny tool in both instances, for the threaded one, i pressed one side, screwed in the other with a dedicated tool. Either way, super easy. I dont have the tool to take them out though :(

If you are working on a BB 30 the Enduro tools are much nicer and less likely to bodge the job. (No Hammer) Also for BB 30 grease isn't always the right answer. Incredibly scrupulous cleaning and a wee bit of loctite 7649 ten minutes of drying time and then a wee bit of Loctite 609 before you press in the bearings will usually result in a silent smooth job. Clean all surfaces before hand like you mean to not even leave microscopic dust behind.

I feel like tapping it out could cause damage opposed to pressing it out. I also feel like it would be good to use at least some type of light oil that is carbon safe to prevent chaffing. Not sure if that is the right term but that is what I am going to call it. Maybe its galling?

2016 specialized diverge with shimano tiagra crankset that makes a lot of noise (popping noise while climbing). What tools do I need and parts? I'm assuming that I have press in crankset, am I right?

I have a Giant Contend SL 1 Disc 2018, which is an entry-level bike. It comes with a press fit bottom bracket. How did that happen, do I have a high-end component on my entry-level bike?

I have what I think is a BB86 bottom bracket. 41mm Cups with bearings having internal diameter of 24mm for 24mm Shimano cranks. Park Tool suggests the BBT90.3. This tool only hit the bearings out of the cups. it doesn't spread wide enough to be able to strike the cups out. Is this normal? Do I need a different tool to remove the cups? The internal hole of the cup is approx 28mm.

stick with threaded a single £5 tool for installation and removal, against around £200 worth of tools which'll rarely be used.

@@rollinrat4850 lol - you're correct. I can't believe Si had the audacity to claim they have great luck with press-fit considering that GCN presenters change bikes out so often.

Yo, I recently built my new Cannondale Caad12. It has a BB30 bottom bracket. The cable routing clashes with the bottom bracket, what have I missed? Thanks
