I love watching this woman work. I haven’t owned a Subaru in years, but I watched this one and the EJ head gasket one a while back for fun. She uses her tools skillfully such that she’s not constantly fighting the work. Care and consideration in every step with mentions of potential pitfalls and foresight to reassembly later. A joy to observe for sure.
Very nice video. Sue does an amazing job, step by step with commentary instructions you can understand. Clear and concise without all the wannabe you tuber attitude and trash talk. She is very professional. I am thanking her for her great job.

Clear and concise is right. After watching this video I feel like a mere mortal such as myself could pull a Subaru engine. Imagine that.
All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you so much. This was the main video I used the last two weekends. I blew up my 09 legacy 25na and found a parts car with a recently serviced motor and followed this almost exact and got back on the road for >1000$ instead of thousands at the shop.
This video is GOLD. Pulling the motor in my brother’s 09 Impreza 2.5i while watching her work masterfully
I found that if you’re having trouble getting the new engine in place with the engine mounts, take the nut and bolt off the top of the transmission to help it slide backwards. Worked like a charm for me.
This woman is amazing, so knowledgeable and thorough. Explaining the process and how the different components interact. It might be the best engine pull video on KZread.i watched her video for the head gaskets replacement, which I think is the continuation of this video. These 2 videos are probably the best Subaru videos on KZread.
This video helped me a great deal, thank you. One concern a lot of DIYers may face is if they pull the TC out when pulling the motor. It happens a lot. there is a small c-clip on the shaft of the TC that gets mis- aligned and will not let you re-install the TC all the way. Watch for it. After I caught it, re-install was a breeze.
If your doing this for the first time, after removing the torque convertor bolts, take the long starter motor bolt and drill a hole through a piece of framing timber and put the bolt through the wood. Then pass the bolt into the starter hole and into one of the holes on the torque convertor. Pinch up hand tight , you may need to pack the bolt out a bit. This will hold the torque convertor in place when you pull the engine.
This young lady is an amazing mechanic 🙌🙌🙌

Damn. She is fast as hell at this! I've probably watched a dozen engine removal videos in preparation for doing it myself on my '04 STi. It looks like she could do this in her sleep! =D One thing I don't get is why a lot of people will go through the trouble of removing the fans from the radiator, when pulling the rad (with fans installed) is literally just the top two brackets held on with one bolt each. It's faster and gives you more room to work. 🤔

I was wondering this myself. Does the automatic model possibly have trans cooler lines going to it? Maybe to avoid losing trans fluid, and making a mess?
I don't know what is wrong with myself. I have been doing a job like this for 23 years now and still enjoy so much watching stuff like that
Just did the job and wanted to add that if you have trouble lining the torque converter bolts you can always line everything up from the bottom of the car. On the driver side there is a way to have a visual on the flywheel and you can also use a flat screwdriver to turn the flywheel from the bottom of the car! Once they are lined up on the bottom you go back on top to put that first bolt in. Hope this helps!
So lovely to see a woman repair a Subaru, men should also learn to fix their own vehicles! Very informative and detailed video in minimal length. Thank you!
I appreciate this very much! it definitely does good for your company as I'll look at you first for car supplies.
I love sue,I wouldnt be who ive become without 1a auto ,theyre the best there is period.

Ok, just saw the video twice!✌ now let's get started! Wish me luck! Not on the job, but on the motor I bought for 1300 for the swap. Lol
Stellar job Sue , Fantastic demonstration and great skills , thanks for posting : )
Edit: well done to this lady , she did really well 1 dislike is an mitsubishi owner 😂
She does a fantastic job! I'm a Honda tech, but I'm about to go in & do one of these motors, I was wondering how I was gonna get to the torque converter bolts & now i know! I appreciate this video very much & I'm impressed with her obvious skill, you can tell she really does this for a living.
Excellent content and very helpful. The technician did a very good job of explaining each step. Thank you for posting.

Really well done video. She did a great job explaining the process and spoke clearly.
Those 2 lower bolts that are a pain to get to, aren't if you wait until you lift/jack the engine transmission, then you can easily get them from the top. Also you should have the little Subaru bracket that holds the torque converter in place through the starter hole to make sure it doesn't get pulled out. The bracket is expensive so I made my own ;)

best video ever,i am yet to replace my 2009 out back in a few days, thanks for the video,it really gave me a lot of clues, since its going to be my time with subaru
someone sold me a 2010 Subaru Forester, he told me there is small oil leak and that it needs a valve cover gasket. I replaced the oil one day with the right amount but the dip stick shows overfilled, I drained the oil out and it was not, after replacing the oil again and still showing overfilled the car had white smoke coming out of the exhaust, when I gave it a slight push on the gas, the car smoked even more and won't drive at all even though the engine still running. Your video has given the confidence I need to tackle the job myself. I can fetch the money for a replacement but 2500 dollars labor will be my sweat equity. BTW, do you guys sell rebuilt engines? A very much obliged!!! New subscriber.
In the process of doing my 2002 Subaru outback try'ed to take the heads of in the car' now I know why pulling the motor is a good idea because the head bolts are quite long and don't clear the chassis and it led me to the point i had to cut the head bolts gasket kit comes with new bolts anyway so i pulled the motor for reassembly....

I'm about to purchase a 2001 Subaru Outback and need to pull the engine out so looking at this is great to show me just what I need to do. Great video and she really explains all the things you need etc. While I've worked on other engines I've never worked on one of these so again, thanks.

Thank you very much for these instructions. Sue does an amazing easy to follow task. This has helped us greatly!
great video, used it extensively when I pulled my 06 outback engine. just FYI, for the home/diy mechanic without the fancy lift. much easier to remove/reinstall that engine and detach the transmission, if the intake manifold is removed while engine is still in the car. especially, if the engine removal purpose is to rebuild the heads or block.
Thanks, made my notes, now it's time to give this a shot! Thanks for the confidence boost! Now I know I can do it.

At 8:44 when talking about taking the bolts off the Torque converter. Clarify that THERE ARE 4 BOLTS you need to take off. I jacked My stuff up because Ole girl said "and there's the other one" Next time say something like " and there is the fourth and final one be sure you get ALL 4. ALL 4!!!" Other than that it's a great tutorial

I'm planning to help my friend swap the engine on his 2010 5MT outback. How does the procedure differ from an automatic vs a manual?
Thanks for this great video. Regards.
Thank you! What a great resource.
Is there a different method for swapping a turbo engine 2.5? Or is it basically the same procedure?
best tutorials on youtube. take my money.
Great video, appreciated it. I am getting ready to swap one out in the near future and feel confident that it shouldn't be too bad. Of course I say that now, lol.
Another awesome and well explained video guys, well done Sue, can you tell me if the H6 removal is similar to this please ?? If not can you please tell me where the removal is different ?? Or do you guys have a video for that ?? I always love your videos as you tell us everything in a way the average Joe can follow, greetings from Australia.
Great video. Everyone with a Subaru knows getting the plugs out is a pain and they say to lift the engine a little bit. Can that be done by only loosening those two engine mounts shown and putting a jack under the trans?
Thanks for the vid guys and girls, really appreciate it and job well done 🙏
Very helpful and well shot video. One question though...why not just take the whole radiator ( complete with fans etc) out before lifting the engine?
Hell of a tech! You helped me so much! Thanks

i really appreciate this video, if you don't mind a few questions.... working on an '05 legacy outback, with the 2.5L non turbo, what kind of issues am i looking at bolting in an engine that came in off an automatic into a manual? as far as i'm "used to" just remove the flexplate install flywheel and clutch etc.... but i'm like brand new... any advice is welcome to get my daily driver going

Can I use a different part number head gasket that's better than the standard ones? Anyone have any idea if so and which you use if you use one? Maybe one from a turbo model? Or a gasket from a newer model that's better? Or we stuck with the junk one? Thanks!

I’m working on pulling my motor out 04 FXT and I can’t get the motor to separate from the transmission. I have the TC bolts out all the bell housing bolts out. It’s an auto I don’t know what else could be holding it together. Anyone have any tips?
I’m doing this on a manual Subaru. I don’t have these torque converter bolts do I?
Nice job!
First off, great video. I was wondering how different this would be on a 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5? One thing is the belts. My Impreza has stretch belts. Can I do the same procedure as you did when putting them back on?

Hello! I saw your youtube videos about subaru repairs. I have a question, i have 2006 subaru outback and there's zero compression in cylinder #4 and the code is misfire in cylinder #4. Do you know whats the issue and what needs to be repaired ?
@louiepinto3730

one of the 4 valves is stuck open. It will need new valves and new guides and mating surface refinished. This happened to me and I just bought a new head through Summit because rebuilding the old one was just an $80 cost difference.
Awesome video! Can anyone clarify if there will still be those 2 torque converter bolts through that plastic boot on a car with standard trans? Are there any extra parts that you will need pulling an engine out of a car with an automatic transmission to be put into a car with standard transmission?
@clayhoward933
3 жыл бұрын
Since it is a standard trans, there will be no torque converter, only a clutch. There is no need to remove the rubber cover to the engine to get those bolts, once the bell housing bolts are removed, the tranny should be free of the engine
what happened if you drop the torque convertor? how do you get it out?
Nice work.

I really appreciate the video. The mechanic changed the automatic transmission on my legacy. I now I have a rare issue. The machine start correctly , but in the moment to move to D drive position the machine start to vibrate, this issue start moving to Reverse or Drive position. Then after some minutes I can hear a little noise like sheet metal little scratch and start to fail , and the revolutions on machine and dash start to move down and up I've changed different engines and transmission, in this case was the mechanic because I didn't time. Now for me is very difficult found the actual issue. If do you have any idea , will can help me . Regards
Lovely
Is it possible to replace the motor mounts without pulling the entire motor? Can you just use a jack to lift the engine enough to clear them? Thanks

I am curious why Subaru did not notch out the bottom of the transmission bell housing (like in a small block chevy) so you could attach the torque converter more easily, instead of that little inspection hole? Anyone know?
Do any of you know what kind of a socket she was using on her impact gun the one that swivels?

Sue is so wonderful
I agree with the notion that the bell housing stud nuts are a huge PITA. I've cobbled together all shapes of tools to get at them and NOTHING I could come up with would let me wrench these in a sane way. I ended up ditching the idea of trying to snake my way to victory and, instead, just pulled the C/V axles out such to get a real tool in there to break these free... But, then, I'm not spoiled with an articulating impact setup either. Just ratchets, extensions, cheater bars, and my arms. (.....also, I remembered too late that the half shafts are held in with a simple to remove roll pin, allowing fairly painless removal of the offending part of the C/V axle. So I ended up renting a slide hammer I didn't need)
Can a 2004 Subaru engine fits 05 Subaruoutback
I have an '08 Outback that needs the engine replaced. I wish you could do it for me.
