How To Remove A Subaru Engine (Step By Step)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

You guys have asked for this video for a while so finally decided to throw it out there. How exactly do you remove a Subaru Engine? Well lemme show ya! This is pretty applicable to any Subaru. Yes some things will be different between all chassis but it should apply.
In this video I am using a 2006 Subaru WRX STi as the car we are removing the engine from. Older cars will typically have some things break as you go to remove items but don't sweat it to much, You can do it!

For 1st time folks. Mark hoses with painters tape, number them and write where they go in a notebook. That way on the way back to install them you dont miss a single one, mark them off the list and remove the tape (that way if you see tape, you missed it) Group bolts on zip lock bags and write where they go. Mark direction of parts that same way. Great video wish it was out 7 months ago when I pulled my engine out. 😂

Just an FYI for anyone doing this, don’t remove the pitch stop. The pitch stop isn’t holding the engine, it’s holding the transmission and has up and down movement so it will not brake. You will have no problem getting the engine out with it in and then you’re not leaving your transmission sitting on 2 shafts and 1 mount.

I love how you say “don’t need to lift the car to pull the engine, remove intake, intercooler, battery, alternator” then removes in reverse order and immediately lifts the car 🤣 love it! I definitely appreciate you breaking it down in a quick tutorial, not overly in depth, not full of filler

Thank you for all you do for our community & fans of yours! I’m wondering how you would compare this type of manual trans EJ STi removal to a non turbo ej53 with auto trans from the same generation? I’m assuming the auto non turbo would be less parts and therefore less hassle, is that assumption correct? Any major differences in removal that you can think of by chance? Thanks again, your hard work never goes unnoticed!

Two questions for you as I am prepping to replace a clutch in my 18' STI (never let you girl drive your STI when the last standard she drove was years ago and was a 90s civic....) any way. 1. do you have to remove the intake manifold to pull the engine, or will the engine come out with the intake still bolted on with all the appropriate connections and hoses removed? 2. I am assuming that with removing the turbo, down pipe, headers and intake etc... that I'll need to replace all the gaskets to these parts as well, correct? Thanks for the awesome video @Smeedia, always look forward to your new videos!

May need to pull the engine off my BRZ. I think the compression ring aint working anymore. I'm thinking of throwing an OEM short block assuming my heads are still good I'm at 70k miles, 10k of those were hks supercharged miles. Is that advisable? if so do i have to get the heads resurfaced to get a good seal with the new block?

So I just did this job and I think we totally forgot to loosen the nuts on the transmission mount before jacking the transmission up 😅 is it absolutely necessary to do that? We were able to jack the transmission up a good amount even with the nuts secured on there but I wasn’t sure if that would cause problems on the mount itself by doing that. I haven’t had a chance to visually check the mount but is it even worth looking at?

Smeedia. I have a important question. What if I’m putting the motor back in and i got the bottom bracket bolts back in but when try putting the motor in and connect to trans it’s not going. I have the wholes and everything lined up but it’s like the clutch for is in place but belhousing won’t clamp together. What may be the problem. Is there a way I can instagram you that way I can send a picture on where I’m stuck at bro?

I kept thinking to myself, this mechanic is speaking at an auctioneer’s rate. Maybe it is my 82 year-old ears. Hope I can follow it all and get my 2003 Subaru Forester engine out to make it easier to replace its head gaskets, get the heads skimmed by a machine shop, find oil leaks and adjust a noisy valve. Then hope I can put it all back together before the North Dakota winter sets-in.

Is this an indicator of my motor going out or spark plug is loose?

everyone i talk to say they hate working on subaru motors because they are the hardest motors to work on and that always baffles me, ive never come across a motor more easily worked on!, everything is up top or in the front to get access to. It can be pulled in less than an hour. I think the whole having two heads on opposite sides of the motor scares people.
