How to Remove Door Panels and Replace Speakers on an X300 Jaguar XJ6 / XJ12 / XJR (1995-1997)

The X300 chassis Jaguar XJ was produced for only three model years, 1995-1997. This guide walks through the process of removing the door panels/inserts/cards and replacing the speakers. This guide should apply to all X300 XJ models including XJ6, XJ12, XJR, Sport models, Sovereign models, and Vanden Plas/Daimler models.
As mentioned in the video, my car has the non-premium sound system, which means I do not have a subwoofer on the rear parcel shelf. If your car has the premium sound system, this video guide still applies. However, this guide does not contain information for removing and replacing the subwoofer. I'm sure there are a few threads on jaguarforums.com in the X300 section that explain how to do this.
Let me know if you have any questions. I read all video comments, so you'll definitely get a reply. Also feel free to let me know if you have any ideas for an X300 Jaguar video, I'm all ears.

Very fine demo. A lenthy explanation is never too much, because it's the little things that count. I find that short explanations are a waste of time, because it leaves you at the end still somewhat confused. Continue with this fine education, as it's good for profies and amatures alike. 🤗

Great video! I have owned my 1995 Vanden Plas XJ6 for the past 3 years in Phoenix, Arizona and had my speakers replaced by an audio sound place locally; however, now the insulation (yellowish thick stuff) has come loose from the passenger front door causing a lot of trouble in shutting the door and opening it. If I had the patience and agility, I was thinking of following your instructions. But since I am getting old and crotchety, I guess I'll bite the bullet and take it somewhere and pay them. But thank you so much for such a well-done video - your explanations are fabulous! And I am a girl who only thinks she wants to do it all herself. ;-D

Thanks for this Eric. Great information. Just what I needed to know. Hope you make more videos like this. I have a 1996 X300 and it is the best Jaguar I have ever owned. It will probably be my last Jaguar, as this car was the best and most dependable XJ6 they ever made. Not to mention that it is also the last of the straight 6 engines, and the last of the traditional Jaguar luxurious cars that offered "Grace, Space and Pace, or to put it another way "Leather, wood and waft" With the older beautiful Jaguars cars, you either got it or you didn't. You have a great car there Eric. Keep the good work up.

Hi X300Sauce. I have watched your video before and have found it very helpful and interesting. Thanks for your input. Hope your car is running well. Just a little bit of trivia info: My model is actually a X330 and all that means that it is a LWB. (as you know X300 is the factory code) My X Type factory code is a X400. That is interesting because the X300 series and the X Type were designed by the Geoff Lawson design team. He designed some of the most beautiful Jaguars after William Lyons but passed away at only 58 soon after. Then came Ian Callum who left the jaguar history behind whilst trying to compete too much with the likes of BMW. They lost a lot of the older regular buyers for the younger BMW etc type market but then they just became another competitor rather than the unique classic individualist car that were so different from the other run of the mill cars. So now we just have more of the same with different badges. With Jaguars you either loved or you hated them. And that was simply because you either got it or you didn't.

Regarding the plastic socket in the door and the metal spring clip. they are SUPPOSED to come out together, because there must be a very firm fixing in the metal door. So that when one closes the door using the handle ; it keeps the panel firmly in place, now you have bent the metal clip there is a chance you will rip the door panel off if closed too firmly.

Keith Mclaughlin Hey Keith, thanks for the insightful comment. After pondering for a bit, you make a lot of sense. I think there’s a chance you’re right, although I’m not certain. In my explanation, I was repeating an explanation I read in several threads on JaguarForums. With that said: 1. The first time I removed the driver’s door panel, the clip was not installed properly. The metal prongs had not been pushed through the plastic piece by whoever was in there previously. By this time, I had already owned the car for several years and had daily driven it during that period. I never had any issues and the door panel handle had felt solid since the start of my ownership. 2. The rear doors do not have this type of clip at all. 3. Lastly, metals have two stages of bending. Bending starts as “Elastic Deformation” and then eventually becomes “Plastic Deformation”. Within the elastic stage, the metal will return to its exact starting place when released. Once bent beyond elastic and into the plastic range, the metal will not return to its starting position. In the case of this clip, you do not need to bend the metal prongs beyond the elastic region, meaning they return to their exact position when released without any appreciable change to the metal’s properties. The exception to this is a different type of wear and failure known as “Fatigue” which can occur even if the metal is never bent beyond the elastic. However, fatigue is a something that occurs over many thousands or even millions of load cycles, which is not happening in the case of this metal clip which has probably been touched maybe 10 times since the car was manufactured. Additionally, the metal prongs are made of steel. Steel has a Fatigue Limit where, if the loads on the part are under the limit, fatigue does not occur at any amount of load cycles. My intuition tells me that the small load caused by bending the prongs with pliers is under the Fatigue Limit of the steel.

Hi, since March I've got a 1996 XJR with the Harman Kardon speakers, but the overall sound quality is crap. Is thre any way to establish whether the bad quality is due to the speakers without dismantling the door? Might be the radio (still the original)?Or a deteriorated connection somewhere? Appreciate the tips and thanks for the very clear and elaborate video. I signed up for all your further videos!

Hey there David. Thanks for watching! Does the audio sound bad, or does it sound broken? One easy way I would start to troubleshoot would be to used the different inputs and see if one of them sounds bad. Try the radio, tape deck, and CD changer if you have it. Bonus if you play the same song through all 3 sources. You can also use the fader to move the audio around to different individual speakers to see if one speaker is the issue. Poor connections would probably cause an intermittent or variable issue. This wouldn’t be my first guess if your issue is constant. Bad stock speakers will get worse and worse over time. Hopefully this helps, feel free to reply with a follow up if you’d like.

On a 1996 xj6 van den plas -- standard sound system not Harmon Kardon -- there are mini-speakers on both sides of the back seat. Are those component tweeter speakers? Need to replace radio system itself (containing cassette player and linked to trunk 6 CD player) before I can listen. I'm told any replacement would negate those options. Any suggestions as to what would fit vehicle and make for a quality sound system today? Don't need loud, just quality. Anyone know if this vehicle is wired for component speakers? That is, should I buy component speakers or would wiring those be a pain in the neck and two Kicker KSC 650 speakers as shown (without tweeters) be most appropriate for this vehicle??? Thanks, if you know....

I have heard that cars that didn't come with CD Changers still had the cd changer cord ran to the trunk. .Any Advice of knowledge you may have would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering could I go to a salvage yard and take premium speaker system from a car and switch it over to my Jag? Does that make sense or is there an easier way to turn my non-premium speaker Jaguar into a PREMIUM speaker Jaguar? Would it be expensive? Please HELP!!! Thanks!!!
