I had to do exact same things to that same grille on my 01. Boy was it some work. Cleaning those honeycomb was the worst part for me.

Chrome plating plastic is usually done by depositing copper on it and then electroplating it with the chrome. So you are correct, its copper with chrome on top.

final product looks great! came in looking for insight on how to pell that weird chrome layer. my plan sand, adhesion promoter, prime paint clear. if it was warmer what psi would you have run on gun? what spray gun do you use? I havent done much with alkylyd. What was the reason you used that in between?

I used alkyd on the back for a simple coverage since not going to be seen or noticed. Used the ANI R160T a nice mid sized gun for this small job. On a hotter day say 70F would run medium reduce, full fluid, full fan and adjust the air for best atomization. No gun settings are carved in stone it's whatever works that day. I’m working on my 3rd gen grille half chrome was missing cause was coming off I slowly pulled some chrome off now I got it off almost ready for paint beside need go around the edges get remaining chrome off

Still looks the same as the day it was painted. Even where I filled it the recesses for the emblem.

Does it put off an odor that I have to do it outdoors?

Same principle if the chrome is lifting but if in good condition sand, prime and paint. Thanks for watching much appreciated.

Man i tried this with some badges and the chrome didnt come off the badges… what am i doing wrong? Sprayed the badges, left it one for a half hour and scrubbed and it didnt come off

Are you sure they're plastic chrome and not stainless steel.

@@swc-diygarage from what i read they’re abs plastic supposedly. Just trying to feel it out before i do the same to my 4th gen big horn chrome grill

@@joellasierra my chrome was already lifting. May need to apply more heat with the heat gun.

@@Luuuugn sand it really well then apply some primer. Treat it like any other type of bodywork

@@swc-diygarage Some area's worked a little but that stuff is on there! If I let it cool, it would not come off, so it tried it heated and it distorted the plastic. Any less hot and it was not budging. I appreciate your post. I was hopeful it would work.
